Please do not compare Tiger Woods to Ben Hogan. Ben threw himself in front of his wife to save her life in a head on bus crash. Tiger cheated on his. Ben gave himself over to the range and practice. Tiger made night clubs and whores his practice. Ben preferred to not play in Europe and instead became a 4 time winner of the U.S. Open. Tiger can barely show up for a Major these days. I did'nt realize the pinko thing. Then I have to agree with you. However, if you asked him about the five majors. He would tell you the medal is exactly the same as the others. He called it the fifth in interviews with Venturi
You also have to remember, Tiger is a slinger. So, Tiger's swing speed is slower than Hogan's. Hogan has pure rotation, no need for timing or waiting for the hands to finish the race. Hogan's method is seek and destroy the ball as fast as you can while maintaining control. If that ball could talk...
This is what you'd see if Hogan were alive and showed up at the night range while you're hitting balls. As far as to his age, my guess he's in his 60's here.

It's difficult to compare Tiger and Hogan, Hogan, IMO, definitely has the superior swing method. Hogan also did not have the advantages Tiger had, plus he had that devastating car accident. At on point in his career, Hogan won 9 of 17 consecutive majors that he played in. Frankly, under different circumstances, I think Tiger would be talking about breaking Hogan's records. That said, Tiger has everything except the best swing in golf.
@1tontomato yes that is true tiger doesn't have control, but when he came on tour 1997 - 2003 was the best swing ever created even jack said it, tiger had POWER and superb control, but the man is so caught in finding the perfect swing that he forgets its not about finding the perfect swing its about using your swing perfectly, tiger is stubborn its disappointing that he doesn't go back to his old swing
LOL......you couldn't be more wrong. His distance control with his irons was lacking by Pro standards, Tiger himself said that. Sure, when he was ON, he he was on. But he wasn't really consistent about it.
@helenathena Best swing ever or best stretch ever? What if a guy like Hogan was as big and strong as Tiger, and putted as well as he did (esp. during that stretch) Just a hypothetical question.
@steadilyshinein99 yes your obsolutetly right, to me tiger tiger has the best short game right now on tour and second best of all time i put jack 1st for his incredible pressure putts, but a real good ball striker is mister hogan himself, lee westwood or rory mcilroy
its not that tiger doesn't have full control thats not true, its that he cant turn his hips anymore because of his left knee, hogan always turn does hips real good it was one big part to his swing, when it comes to driver you need a bigger hip turn thats why when it comes to irons its not that big of a hip turn so tiger can control it
Is it my imagination or does the master actually fat one?The swing between 2.03 and 2.09? Looks to me as if he chunks it and doesnt quite finish his follow through.Bigger divot too.
nice and simple he kept it and always a forward leaning shaft at impact check out the best lessons on the tube at hitmanhawky and check my swing out looks like jack's and ben's in the hitting area check it out and thanks
I can only dream and aspire to one day golf as good and Ben Hogan. Ben is the golfer that all the great golfers of today looked up to, guys like Nicklaus, Palmer, Delay, just to name a few. I would put money that Hogan could easly give Tiger a run for his money had he been alive to be able to play him.
Tiger is definitely one of, if not the best iron player on tour. He often finished top of the GIR list at the end of the year. So to call his ball striking average is just untrue. Ben Hogans swing and achievements speak for themselves, you don't need to try and diminish what others have done in order to make your point. Hogan may well be the best ball striker of all time but you can still show respect to the great ball strikers of today.
Agree, I could never call a player with that many diabolical drives going way left and right the greatest. Never liked his personality either. Hogan is the man.
Yup. He's a young Tom Watson in his basic pattern--long but erratic off the tee, but gets better the closer you get to the green, and kills people with his short game. When your short game is that good, you're almost never out of it; there's almost nothing that can happen to you between tee and green that will destroy your chances, and you're always in position where a run of a few spectacular shots can win it for you (as opposed to Hogan's drill-press consistency).
Of course, Watson completely turned around in his 40s to become one of the best and most consistent ballstrikers on tour. If Woods develops that kind of controlled game out of nowhere like Watson did, and can still make every five-footer like he does, maybe he'll get to the Nicklaus and Snead records after all. I have zero respect for him as a person, but it wouldn't surprise me if he got there. He doesn't have Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Player, Trevino, or Watson to beat.
@1tontomato it's easy to say that until u watch tiger play in real life!! and plus hogan wasn't playing 7200 yard courses in his time, therefore he shape 80% swings with a 6 iron around 140-150 yards
@shivom90 There was not much golf technology in Hogan's time. The lofts of the irons were very, very weak. For example, an 8 iron in Hogan's era would have the same loft of today's PW. Hickory shafts and Hogan used much shorter irons than Tiger did. The golf balls Hogan used were not even on par to today's Pro V1 in terms of distance and spin. Take all of that into consideration and Hogan is still the best ever, no doubt about it.
@1tontomato although i agree that his swing was ridiculously pure, he was one of the best, and the technology they had at the time was inferior,, u have to consider that its all relative. the fairways were much wider, courses much shorter and the greens were much slower. hogan didn't require nearly the same swing speed as tiger does today or the same level of fitness. in addition, tiger faces the pressure of being the most hyped athlete in the world. under these conditions, i say tiger takes it
@shivom90 Swing speed? have you seen Hogan swing in his late 30's? Hogan has fastest swing speed I've ever seen. Take a look at my video called Ben Hogan and Fr. Keller, fast forward towards the end and see for yourself, blazing core speed. Tiger does not come close. As for the media, well here we're talking about 2 different apples. Hogan was reclusive and private so he didn't bother with all the media hype. Hogan did not have to rely on sponsorships to make a living like Tiger does.
Now, dammit, I've had about enough. Of course Tiger does everything faster, better, and bigger than anybody else ever, and invented golf on top of that.
I mean, "pressure" from being "the most hyped"? Like he didn't participate in all that himself, like he didn't bring it on himself? "Pressure" is a guy holding down a job to support four kids while the parent corporation is downsizing, or getting up every morning to go start up the tractor. "Pressure" from being the richest athlete ever? Please.
As for all the other nonsense, it's provably wrong. The courses were shorter, but not short enough to account for the differences in equipment. As for greens, you're not thinking like a player. Fast greens are true greens. The greens they putt on now are worlds better and smoother. Rough in the majors was penal and fairways narrow. Today, players are product--"these guys are good"--and they set up the courses not to embarrass them...
...For instance, in that Tiger v. Rocco debacle at Torrey Pines a few years ago, neither one hit even 60% of the fairways, and yet they tied for the lead and went into a playoff--IN THE U.S. OPEN. 53% of fairways in past Opens would get you about an 84.
Anyhow...conditions are infinitely more consistent and near-perfect, and they've had to lengthen the courses to keep 45-year-olds from hitting 8-irons into #15 at Augusta, for example.
I think Hogan would agree - If hitting a 5 iron only one-hundred eighty five yards allows you to control it precisely; Hit a 5 iron 185 yards!!!. We do not have to play Power golf to play well. I play blades and can hit a 2 iron @ 210. With a slight fade normally but can draw it up if I need to. In this video you do not see any hint of balance loss from powering through the ball wrecklessly. There are several videos around here that indicate Hogan didn't hit short irons into every hole!
tiger is a better ball striker than hogan. how can people not understand this. tigers swing is perfect, he is the most underrated player ever in terms of ball striking.
no way mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tiger is the greatest golfer ( due to his all round game and putting ) but hogan struck the ball like no other..EVERY pro including jack nicklaus that played with him and is still alive to see tiger today agrees.
Davis love 3,,brett ogle and tom watson are just 3 players i have followed live playing with tiger and were better strikers. HOGAN RULES!
Buy the book power golf by hogan and look at his impact position in all the pictures and you will understand why.
I agree. Hogan's plane is better which creates his inside to inside path. Tiger is still inside to out and still gets stuck. Hogan solved this problem.
yup he misses to the right with his tee shots 30% of the time. tiger has the best short game and is the best putter. that's what makes him the best. it is not his ball striking.
one can miss left with any swing path if the club is closed enough. Hogan discovered how to play "closed to open". Furyk does this well, too. Its a lot to explain but the results create an inside to inside path with less club face rotation through impact. It actually eliminated the left shot that plagued Hogan and if
anything created a slight fade. I've read a lot of Jim Hardy and while some of it at first seems kind of kooky, I have really bought into his ideas.
@pcakesxl Great comment, closed to open is one of the many little clues hogan left. His club in his prime years was perfectly square to the arc below hip height. Meaning no aggressive hand release. People need to take a while to get their heads round this
That's weird. Hogan himself certainly perceived himself to be going open to square, and even believed he was releasing the club with his hands aggressively. It seems to me that about 98% of Hogan retrotheory these days is a revision of what the guy actually said and was trying to do.
@emncaity I think you are referring to his comments early on in his career and wrote about in power golf. However 6 years after publishing that book his clubface was square to the arc below hip height- he referred to this as closed to open through impact. The evidence is out there it be seen in a swing sequence on historic golf photos and the footage of him at the masters.
I've read both books thoroughly, but it's been a while. How about pointing to the specific page (I suppose you're referring to Five Lesson) re closed-to-open?
Nicklaus certainly didn't think Hogan was closed-to-open. He deliberately patterned his game after Hogan's principles (except for the flatter plane), and yet also believed in open-to-closed for all normal shots--not an extra rotation from the hands, but the natural rotation of the body and the natural swing arc.
@elnocho3 thanks. People still talk about getting the club as open as possible so the hands can turn over as hard as they want through impact. This only turns hooks into straight shots and straight shots into pushes. Hogan did release his hands hard but it started from the top. the hands added more pop but were not required to square the clubface. Frankly, he could have used a strong grip.
I think much of the time it's a matter of poor definition of terms. The hands can "turn over" relative to a fixed point, but still be square to the natural arc and plane of the swing set by the turning body. What Hogan did during his best years was to have all this working as a unit, which was exactly what Nicklaus was trying to do, quite explicitly in Jack's mind, in fact--no independent twisting of the toe over the heel.
Also, with regard to hand release in general: What makes a swing look "handsy" is a lack of support from the rest of the "parts" (I use quote marks because the idea of "parts" is really just a convention; the body is a whole). I've explained it to students by getting them to toss a ball with all hand and no arm motion. It's completely unnatural, and in fact is more or less what is commonly referred to as "throwing like a girl." (ct'd)...
...Then I get them to throw it 80% of their max distance. If they're athletic at all, they wind up, turn the torso, swing the arm, and release the ball that way. You'd say the first throw looked "handsy" and the second didn't, but in fact there's every bit as much hand action in the second throw as the first. This is why I believe, in essence, that Hogan's genius was that his support for the swinging motion was better than everybody else's.
@emncaity What do you mean em? Support for swinging motion I mean. His setup? His legs/balance? (mechanical and "athletic") Interesting anyway...I have always thought balance ("set it at address") was very important. Like an Iron Byron always having a stable base.
Square to the arc below hip height does not equal closed-to-open. It doesn't even indicate "no aggressive hand release," unless you define an aggressive hand release as one in which the butt of the club stops moving (or almost does). Hogan's genius was that he could release the hands aggressively while moving his arms and torso so strongly and aggressively too, and staying so well on plane, that he avoided both the exaggerated toe-over-heel release and the flip.
check out tigers fucking impact position, its perfect, along with every other pro on tour. tiger is by far the most underrated player in terms of ball striking, he hits his iron like no other player has ever done. Hogan couldnt dream of hitting some of the iron shots tiger can hit, and im not talking about distance cause obviously technology has changed. listen to any account from a player who has played with tiger, and they will tell you that he is the best iron player they have ever seen.
"Best I've ever seen" doesn't say much. Hogan's swing is pure poetry, Tiger's is like a volcano. What's not to like about either?
Tiger however, has to be careful not to damage his back as he ages. He unleashes a tremendous amount of torque when he swings. Hogan, on the other hand, swung just as effortlessly in his '60's as his 30's - which probably allowed him to play again after his horrendous car accident. I bet Tiger has a whole lot of respect for Hogan's swing - one craftsman to another.
its such a misconception that tigers swing is a "volcano" as you say it is. Sure, when he goes for a green hes gonna take a rip, who wouldnt? but watch some videos of tiger hitting shots on youtube, hes so smooth, so beautiful. one video where this is especially evident is the "protracer tiger fade" on 16 at torrey pines. That is pure poetry, and youll agree when you see it.
When Tiger hits a tee shot, the metaphor that comes to my mind is that of a volcano, (which by the way, are extremely beautiful), and is meant as a compliment. I must say I don't get your aggressive defense of Wood's swing, which needs none.
When you go to a museum do you argue about the painters vs. the sculptors? Best to just enjoy.
@mattyco1234 Sometimes he looks smooth enough...I will say though I could care less what someone's swing "looks" like...people need to get off Tiger's back on this. As if he'll ever be as smooth as someone like Els. He ain't as easygoing for starters...think there might be a correlation? Hmmm...
you and mattyco1234 are b oth forgetting one person who is inbetween the potry of hogan and the volcano of tiger,he has won the most majors so far. jack nicklaus was a volcano and poetry combined
@mattyco1234 You would have a much more sound argument calling sergio garcia a better ball striker because his lag is amazing. Tiger's ball striking stats are terrible.
If you have a little rightward upper spine axis tilt at address (like Hogan) you dont need to feel like you shift right on the way back. You can keep your COG's fairly centered and still look 'Behind it'. Experiment with how different your backswing can look depending on the degree of axis tilt at address.
No sir...partly because we don't really have guys at this talent level who end up literally broke, with the wheels stolen off the car, not knowing where the money's coming from for the next meal, hoping there'll still be a job at the gas station or the utility company when he gets home. That kind of thing breeds a different kind of player, who breeds a different kind of swing and attitude.
yes fata... but also notice his head stays behind the ball! you gotta fire off the left side but stay behing the ball baby.. great observation about the left side. anyone who is interested, google the 'forward press' any club... try 60-40 on your front foot. even hood the club until you make consistant contact. but if you are 6-3 235... its a different biomechanics of a swing
...which just tells you how new the "stack and tilt" is NOT. It really isn't that his "weight" is on Hogan's left side at the top (dynamic movement keeps the weight from being settled leftward); it's just that he doesn't make the same kind of lateral move away from the target ("load up the right side" ) that a lot of today's players do. Nicklaus did the same. I guess those guys would have been really good if they'd only trained under the "load-up-the-right-side" gurus today... ;-)
What a video!!! gave me chills.. great work.. Deano...go somewhere else you gimp... sounds like you haven't been laid in forever... Hogan and Snead were the best swingers ever and i learned a lot from them..
this might now be my favorite video on youtube. love the text description. When im hitting balls at the range hard and crisply, i could stay there for 12 hours a day.. and when im not, i could stay there 12 hours a day trying to fix it....
and this is why you'll never understand those of us who play golf b/c we love the game... i want to be on tour, not for the fame or for the money but b/c i love golf and love competing...
btw i do have a life... but golf is a major part of it...
my favorite golf video, period. i believe he knew things that golfers to this day still don't know. even tiger, tiger is the greatest physically and mentally in the sense of strength. not taking anything away from tiger or nicklaus but i think hogan knew more about the game and his swing than anyone else does of their swing. he is great and should be watched more.... this comin from a 16 yr old
Thanks dklein24, for posting these pictures of the Master at
work. What ease and grace, in his wonderful swing. I don't
believe there will ever be another player, that can come close to this perfection. He knew something that other mortals did not. The proof being that, has anyone ever seen another player swing like, or could be mistaken for
Hogan? Even with todays great teachers, with video analysis, It has not been done. Just my opinion of course.
Please do not compare Tiger Woods to Ben Hogan. Ben threw himself in front of his wife to save her life in a head on bus crash. Tiger cheated on his. Ben gave himself over to the range and practice. @steadilyshinein99 yes your obsolutetly right, to me tiger tiger has the best short game right now on tour and second best of all time i put jack 1st for his incredible pressure putts, but a real good ball striker is mister hogan himself, lee westwood or rory mcilroy
helenathena 1 year ago
By the way, in the middle of all this--thanks for posting, OP. Nice vid.
emncaity 1 year ago
its not that tiger doesn't have full control thats not true, its that he cant turn his hips anymore because of his left knee, hogan always turn does hips real good it was one big part to his swing, when it comes to driver you need a bigger hip turn thats why when it comes to irons its not that big of a hip turn so tiger can control it

SmallDannyJW 2 years ago 2
Agree, I could never call a player with that many diabolical drives going way left and right the greatest. Never liked his personality either. Hogan is the man.
RudySunseeker 2 years ago
You're exactly right!
dklein24 2 years ago
@steadilyshinein99
Yup. He's a young Tom Watson in his basic pattern--long but erratic off the tee, but gets better the closer you get to the green, and kills people with his short game. When your short game is that good, you're almost never out of it; there's almost nothing that can happen to you between tee and green that will destroy your chances, and you're always in position where a run of a few spectacular shots can win it for you (as opposed to Hogan's drill-press consistency).
emncaity 1 year ago
@steadilyshinein99
He doesn't have Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Player, Trevino, or Watson to beat.
emncaity 1 year ago
Tiger misses left and right. He doesn't have full control of his swing like Hogan did.
1tontomato 2 years ago 9
@1tontomato i don't think anyone ever had control like hogan. lol ever.
steelerfn 11 months ago
@1tontomato it's easy to say that until u watch tiger play in real life!! and plus hogan wasn't playing 7200 yard courses in his time, therefore he shape 80% swings with a 6 iron around 140-150 yards
shivom90 8 months ago
@shivom90 There was not much golf technology in Hogan's time. The lofts of the irons were very, very weak. For example, an 8 iron in Hogan's era would have the same loft of today's PW. Hickory shafts and Hogan used much shorter irons than Tiger did. The golf balls Hogan used were not even on par to today's Pro V1 in terms of distance and spin. Take all of that into consideration and Hogan is still the best ever, no doubt about it.
1tontomato 8 months ago
@1tontomato although i agree that his swing was ridiculously pure, he was one of the best, and the technology they had at the time was inferior,, u have to consider that its all relative. the fairways were much wider, courses much shorter and the greens were much slower. hogan didn't require nearly the same swing speed as tiger does today or the same level of fitness. in addition, tiger faces the pressure of being the most hyped athlete in the world. under these conditions, i say tiger takes it
shivom90 8 months ago
@shivom90 Swing speed? have you seen Hogan swing in his late 30's? Hogan has fastest swing speed I've ever seen. Take a look at my video called Ben Hogan and Fr. Keller, fast forward towards the end and see for yourself, blazing core speed. Tiger does not come close. As for the media, well here we're talking about 2 different apples. Hogan was reclusive and private so he didn't bother with all the media hype. Hogan did not have to rely on sponsorships to make a living like Tiger does.
1tontomato 8 months ago
@1tontomato
Now, dammit, I've had about enough. Of course Tiger does everything faster, better, and bigger than anybody else ever, and invented golf on top of that.
emncaity 7 months ago
@shivom90
Please.
emncaity 7 months ago
@shivom90
Today, players are product--"these guys are good"--and they set up the courses not to embarrass them...
emncaity 7 months ago
@shivom90
...For instance, in that Tiger v. Rocco debacle at Torrey Pines a few years ago, neither one hit even 60% of the fairways, and yet they tied for the lead and went into a playoff--IN THE U.S. OPEN. 53% of fairways in past Opens would get you about an 84.
Anyhow...conditions are infinitely more consistent and near-perfect, and they've had to lengthen the courses to keep 45-year-olds from hitting 8-irons into #15 at Augusta, for example.
emncaity 7 months ago
@shivom90
On top of that, you've got the overabundance of money and the all-exempt tour, which takes all fear out of it.
Tell you what: I'll take Hogan, Snead, and Nelson against Tiger and any other two from his era. You name the course.
emncaity 7 months ago
Hogan is the best of the best. Practice during the night, never sleep, never let go, always chase the perfection.
And he find it.

There are several videos around here that indicate Hogan didn't hit short irons into every hole!
probob97 2 years ago
What a fitting tribute to the best ball striker the game has ever known.
sfuller94 2 years ago 2
tiger is a better ball striker than hogan. how can people not understand this. tigers swing is perfect, he is the most underrated player ever in terms of ball striking.
mattyco1234 2 years ago
no way mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tiger is the greatest golfer ( due to his all round game and putting ) but hogan struck the ball like no other..EVERY pro including jack nicklaus that played with him and is still alive to see tiger today agrees.
Davis love 3,,brett ogle and tom watson are just 3 players i have followed live playing with tiger and were better strikers. HOGAN RULES!
Buy the book power golf by hogan and look at his impact position in all the pictures and you will understand why.
hardyhardhor 2 years ago
I agree. Hogan's plane is better which creates his inside to inside path. Tiger is still inside to out and still gets stuck. Hogan solved this problem.
pcakesxl 2 years ago
what pros today use the inside to inside path? tks
fadi1025 2 years ago
sure he might get stuck, but going inside to inside you can miss left, tiger never misses left
mattyco1234 2 years ago
yup he misses to the right with his tee shots 30% of the time. tiger has the best short game and is the best putter. that's what makes him the best. it is not his ball striking.
pangtuli 2 years ago
one can miss left with any swing path if the club is closed enough. Hogan discovered how to play "closed to open". Furyk does this well, too. Its a lot to explain but the results create an inside to inside path with less club face rotation through impact. It actually eliminated the left shot that plagued Hogan and if
anything created a slight fade. I've read a lot of Jim Hardy and while some of it at first seems kind of kooky, I have really bought into his ideas.
pcakesxl 2 years ago
@pcakesxl Great comment, closed to open is one of the many little clues hogan left. His club in his prime years was perfectly square to the arc below hip height. Meaning no aggressive hand release. People need to take a while to get their heads round this
elnocho3 2 years ago 4
You're right on base with that comment elnocho3. thanks for looking!
dklein24 2 years ago
@elnocho3
That's weird. Hogan himself certainly perceived himself to be going open to square, and even believed he was releasing the club with his hands aggressively. It seems to me that about 98% of Hogan retrotheory these days is a revision of what the guy actually said and was trying to do.
emncaity 1 year ago
@emncaity I think you are referring to his comments early on in his career and wrote about in power golf. However 6 years after publishing that book his clubface was square to the arc below hip height- he referred to this as closed to open through impact. The evidence is out there it be seen in a swing sequence on historic golf photos and the footage of him at the masters.
elnocho3 1 year ago
@elnocho3
I've read both books thoroughly, but it's been a while. How about pointing to the specific page (I suppose you're referring to Five Lesson) re closed-to-open?
Nicklaus certainly didn't think Hogan was closed-to-open. He deliberately patterned his game after Hogan's principles (except for the flatter plane), and yet also believed in open-to-closed for all normal shots--not an extra rotation from the hands, but the natural rotation of the body and the natural swing arc.
emncaity 1 year ago
@elnocho3 thanks. People still talk about getting the club as open as possible so the hands can turn over as hard as they want through impact. This only turns hooks into straight shots and straight shots into pushes. Hogan did release his hands hard but it started from the top. the hands added more pop but were not required to square the clubface. Frankly, he could have used a strong grip.
pcakesxl 1 year ago
@pcakesxl
I think much of the time it's a matter of poor definition of terms. The hands can "turn over" relative to a fixed point, but still be square to the natural arc and plane of the swing set by the turning body. What Hogan did during his best years was to have all this working as a unit, which was exactly what Nicklaus was trying to do, quite explicitly in Jack's mind, in fact--no independent twisting of the toe over the heel.
emncaity 1 year ago
@pcakesxl
It's completely unnatural, and in fact is more or less what is commonly referred to as "throwing like a girl." (ct'd)...
emncaity 1 year ago
@pcakesxl
...Then I get them to throw it 80% of their max distance. If they're athletic at all, they wind up, turn the torso, swing the arm, and release the ball that way. You'd say the first throw looked "handsy" and the second didn't, but in fact there's every bit as much hand action in the second throw as the first. This is why I believe, in essence, that Hogan's genius was that his support for the swinging motion was better than everybody else's.
emncaity 1 year ago
@emncaity What do you mean em? Support for swinging motion I mean. His setup? His legs/balance? (mechanical and "athletic") Interesting anyway...I have always thought balance ("set it at address") was very important. Like an Iron Byron always having a stable base.
paulski5 1 year ago
@elnocho3
Square to the arc below hip height does not equal closed-to-open. It doesn't even indicate "no aggressive hand release," unless you define an aggressive hand release as one in which the butt of the club stops moving (or almost does). Hogan's genius was that he could release the hands aggressively while moving his arms and torso so strongly and aggressively too, and staying so well on plane, that he avoided both the exaggerated toe-over-heel release and the flip.
emncaity 1 year ago
check out tigers fucking impact position, its perfect, along with every other pro on tour. tiger is by far the most underrated player in terms of ball striking, he hits his iron like no other player has ever done. Hogan couldnt dream of hitting some of the iron shots tiger can hit, and im not talking about distance cause obviously technology has changed. listen to any account from a player who has played with tiger, and they will tell you that he is the best iron player they have ever seen.
mattyco1234 2 years ago
"Best I've ever seen" doesn't say much. Hogan's swing is pure poetry, Tiger's is like a volcano. What's not to like about either?
Tiger however, has to be careful not to damage his back as he ages. He unleashes a tremendous amount of torque when he swings. Hogan, on the other hand, swung just as effortlessly in his '60's as his 30's - which probably allowed him to play again after his horrendous car accident. I bet Tiger has a whole lot of respect for Hogan's swing - one craftsman to another.
mondo4422 2 years ago 3
its such a misconception that tigers swing is a "volcano" as you say it is. Sure, when he goes for a green hes gonna take a rip, who wouldnt? but watch some videos of tiger hitting shots on youtube, hes so smooth, so beautiful. one video where this is especially evident is the "protracer tiger fade" on 16 at torrey pines. That is pure poetry, and youll agree when you see it.
mattyco1234 2 years ago
When Tiger hits a tee shot, the metaphor that comes to my mind is that of a volcano, (which by the way, are extremely beautiful), and is meant as a compliment. I must say I don't get your aggressive defense of Wood's swing, which needs none.
When you go to a museum do you argue about the painters vs. the sculptors? Best to just enjoy.
mondo4422 2 years ago
@mattyco1234 Sometimes he looks smooth enough...I will say though I could care less what someone's swing "looks" like...people need to get off Tiger's back on this. As if he'll ever be as smooth as someone like Els. He ain't as easygoing for starters...think there might be a correlation? Hmmm...
paulski5 1 year ago
you and mattyco1234 are b oth forgetting one person who is inbetween the potry of hogan and the volcano of tiger,he has won the most majors so far. jack nicklaus was a volcano and poetry combined

That kind of thing breeds a different kind of player, who breeds a different kind of swing and attitude.

kanadassugar 3 years ago
yes fata... but also notice his head stays behind the ball! you gotta fire off the left side but stay behing the ball baby.. great observation about the left side. anyone who is interested, google the 'forward press' any club... try 60-40 on your front foot. even hood the club until you make consistant contact. but if you are 6-3 235... its a different biomechanics of a swing
highonfire94080 3 years ago

i meant to day, ya gotta fire off the right side... coil, and start the downswing(forward swinfg) with the left hip and the left shoulder
highonfire94080 3 years ago
it almost looks like stack and tilt. Notice how his weight remains on the left, especially when looking at the front/side view of his swing.
fataloptimist 3 years ago
...which just tells you how new the "stack and tilt" is NOT. It really isn't that his "weight" is on Hogan's left side at the top (dynamic movement keeps the weight from being settled leftward); it's just that he doesn't make the same kind of lateral move away from the target ("load up the right side" ) that a lot of today's players do. Nicklaus did the same. I guess those guys would have been really good if they'd only trained under the "load-up-the-right-side" gurus today... ;-)
