  • dude, look at all those hummingbirds LMAO!

  • Masters of the air..

  • Where do you live

  • @nobody102

    Kentucky

  • @russlouky Nice. Last year we had quite a few in Atlanta. Only one or two showing up this year.

  • @nobody102

Keep the feeders up and ready because I have had many migrate through my yard heading south.

  • I'd like to learn how to feed and take care of humming birds

  • @EspiEspinoza34

Do you have hummingbirds around your house?

  • @russlouky OMG, this is absolutely stunning!!! Great job!

  • I have a special place in my heart for a beautiful hummingbird I named Verde (yes, I know very creative on my part). He had hit his head hard on my back porch. I gave him some homemade nectar and he was good as new. That was the first time I had ever touched or held something so incredibly fragile and magnificent.

  • i dont c hummingbird in my backyard anymore :/

  • @wDeathw

It is not unusual for a hummingbird to leave for a few days and hopefully yours has returned. It is close to migration time especially adult males and you won't see them again until next summer. Maybe you will have more to migrate through so keep the feeders up.

  • Nice work! We have loads of them at the feeders. They were shy but their thirst got the better of their fear and I was able to get some good images.

  • @MrHamburgerHelper

It is hard to get good shots until you can get the hummers used to you. They will stay around and ignore the cameras after they are used to seeing you around.

  • Happy Hour for both bird and people.

  • @PantheraAtrox You got that right. LOL

  • I have lots of hummingbirds visiting my 8 feeders everyday. There are 4X8oz, then 4X32oz. And they drink until all feeders empty every day.

I love to feed them so much, but this July (summer started on 23rd June), I will go for vacation, will come back in November. I am thinking to purchase lots of 72oz and and fill it, so they can last. Is this a good idea? Please tell me what to do, as I don't want to let them down, and there is nobody I can depend on while I'm away.

  • @halim181276 Hi, Your adult hummingbirds except the moms that might be nesting will move on to another location. If there are babies in a nest nearby I hope your neighbors have feeders that will provide a food source for the adult females with babies and everything will be fine. If you are not leaving until the end of July most nesting will be over by then (assuming you have Ruby-throated Hummingbirds). Adding more feeders is not practical. Hummingbirds will find food nearby or move on.

  • excellent filming !

  • Great video. I love hummingbirds, they come to nest in the trees around my house every year, but this year in particular there seems to be an abundance. Not as many as you have though. =}

  • @Raelsatu Thanks, I wish I had as many hummingbirds yearly as I did in 2006 and 2007. I may reach 20 to 30 during migration in a normal year.

  • @russlouky Wow that's quite alot. Since I've been living in northern Maine, we've had 2-4 each each migration, and this year around 10 as far as I can tell. One of my favorite things about them is that they'll feed even if you're right in front of them. And this video looked like an incredible time with so many of them darting around at once.

  • Amazing Pictures.

  • @FHS382 -- Thanks, it is nice to know the video is enjoyed.

  • i wonder how they have sex

  • @insane569 Good question which I certainly don't know the answer to but it has to be touch and go.

  • Great Video. I couldn't help notice the hummingbird feeding from a blue flower. So I guess it's not a hard rule that they only go to red flowers. Its interesting the way they prefer to wash. Its probably dangerous for them to go in standing water. My video pales in comparison but it was exciting just to be able to get it on video.

    Thanks

  • @tmc200527 Hi, hummingbirds love Black & Blue Salvia, Brazilian Sage (blue or purple),

Cigar Plants, Argentina Skies and other non-red blooms as long as they have nectar.

  • My cat really loved this video. She had me play it for her 5 times.

  • @tunghoy I know what you mean. Our cat will swat the screen trying to get the hummingbirds.

  • Omg! It sounds like a bee! It ate right out of ur hand! WOw

  • What amazing little bundles of energy! And such healthy appetites for such tiny birds! Why, the one at 7:08 just couldn't wait! He was so hungry he pushed that other bird right off the feeder! And the one on the hand-held feeder at 8:35 got chased off with a big loud WHOOSH!

I also like that nice close-up of the bird's face you got at 2:38-2:50. I can tell how much you love these little birds and your hobby, and I appreciate you giving us a chance to enjoy them with you!

  • Humming Birds are so cute and beautiful. <3 You're so lucky to have so many, and get so close to them as well! We used to get them a lot where we lived, but we've moved away and I don't know if they get them here. It's nice though, to see videos like this on youtube!

  • @Felailah Thank you.

  • Every time I had a hummingbird feeder I had to get rid of it beacuse wasps would swam around it any suggestions?

  • @Echo19Delta If you have ant problems it is real easy to deal with. Just get an ant moat which you keep water in just above the feeder and ants will not be a problem. Problems with bees, yellowjackets or wasps is a different story. I know of one way to make it hard for them to get to the sugar water and that is a saucer type feeder where the food is below the feeding ports and they can't reach the food. All other feeders that have the food above the feeding ports will attract the pests.

  • amazing

  • @catalinux007leiro Thanks, it is great to know people enjoy hummingbirds and my hobby.

  • @Thunderbolt1000T My home is in PRP and the other location I have feeders/flowers is Riverside, The Farnsley-Moremen Landings. I just saw 4 hummingbirds at Farnsley this morning. I am down to 2 or 3 here at the house.

  • Beautiful

  • Fabulous!! We only have 2 feeders out, but will add more for spring! I didn't know we could place so close together.

Thank You for a great video

  • @a1minx Thanks and all places I know that have a lot of hummingbirds have their feeders hanging across a carport, porch, deck or something similar.

  • great video. im mostly a jackass on youtube, but even i can respect nature and take pleasure in watching its awesomeness :D

  • @crapatitus Thanks and I am glad you enjoy nature.

  • Very cool. I love my hummers. I have one young one who will feed out of the feeder while I am holding it. He comes to me when I'm indoors and looks at me through the screen when the feeder is empty or the bird bath needs more water. They are starting to head south for the winter. I'll miss them until next Spring.

  • @TeresaTango It is neat when they hover and stare in the door as if to say I am not afraid of you.

  • Most excellent video the shots at1:57-2:31 is the most amazing i've ever seen of a hummingbird. Thanks for posting this video.

  • @hammer44head Thanks for the comment and I will have to check those minutes to refresh my memory.

  • I just saw one in my back yard today such awesome animals they seem surreal.

  • Unbelieveable...this video is incredible. Thank you for sharing!!

  • @TisEyerish Thank you for commenting. Enjoy your hummingbirds.

  • This is an incredible video. What part of the country was this taken in and what time of the year?

  • Hi, these clips are from May through September 2007 and all were shot in Louisville, Kentucky. If you enjoyed these clips google Russ Thompson Hummingbirds and vist my website - many photos, videos, etc.

  • I have just begun to start feeding my birds. I live in the Raleigh, NC area, and have about 4-6 birds that visit my feeders. I have 3 feeders out, and have noticed that there is one bird that seems to run all the others off. Does it make any difference if the nectar is red, or clear?

  • Hi, I suggest you only use clear sugar water and there is absolutely no reason to add color to the food. The feeders have red on them and the hummers will find the feeder. It is normal for all hummingbirds to attempt to own your feeders, flowers, etc. It is their way of staying in shape and enables them to fly all the way to Central America for the winter. When you have lots of hummers, they are smart enough to share the feeders and when you only have a few they will fight (nature)

  • @lesliekaner

  • What time of the year does this happen? Also when you say sugar water do you mean you just add sugar to the water you give them or you can actually buy sugar water?

  • @pin9y - I get most of my hummers during August through Octtober because of the new babies that were born and the migrating hummers that pass through my yard.

Make your own sugar water. Use 4 parts water and one part table sugar to make the sugar water they need. Don't make it any weaker than 4 to 1 but you can make it as strong as 3 to 1 during migration and it won't hurt the hummers at 3 to 1 (three parts water and one part table sugar)

  • lucky, i live in the atlantic reigon.

  • @ultimatefaith2 - We are lucky to get the Ruby-throated Hummingbird to vist our Atlantic region

  • THis is awesome I want to get a hummingbird water feeder now. Do you put sugar water in it?

  • @flyingtorpedo Yes you need to use sugar water made of 4 parts water mixed with 1 part sugar

  • AWESOME VIDEO - ALWAYS WONDERED WHERE THEY BUILD THEIR NESTS AND WHAT THE NEST LOOKED LIKE - THANKS

  • Thanks so much for the great vid Russ!!!

  • @suzbailey23 Thanks for the comment - it is great to know people enjoy the video.

  • This is an amzing video of hummingbirds close up!!

  • @KennyTraveling Thanks for the comment.

  • Muito lindos!!Belo vídeo!

  • @siostrowski Thank You!

  • I Love Humming Birds and this video is just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • @LadyRedRocker2 Thank you for the comment.

  • I thought my video was great through my window . That is amazing how close you got. Those are amazing videos

  • @Firebirdking61 Thanks for the comment and hummingbirds are a joy to watch.

  • Wonderful, I could watch this all day!

  • This is awesome. I will be putting up more feeders for sure this year.. thank you so much.. made my morning.

  • Great footage !!

  • Sehr schön anzusehen, aber es wimmelt ja auch dort von Vögeln.

  • Great shots - even got a nest, too! :-)

  • ok..so I live in Manchester, New Hampshire..today is 9-24-09. My regular hummers are gone today! I'll leave my feeder up..I usually get a few visitors, but I am missing them already. Waiting for their return next spring!!!

  • Beautiful! Love the one taking his bath! So cuuute! I love hummers! :)

  • We have two hummingbird feeders in our back yard and had wondered why one was used more than the other. After watching closely for over 1 week we finally noticed that the one feeder was watched and protected (Henry as I call the little Hummer sits on small fastner stub from our hardware cloth about 5-8 feet from the feeder) I now notice that he whows up about 8:00 AM and will be there all day and not let anyother hummer get close to the feeder or eat from it.

  • Thanks for filming and posting this amazing video! We live in No. Va and only have 3-4 a year, but we really look forward to seeing them!

  • Best YouTube video ever. The hummingbirds at my feeder are so territorial. Can't imagine this many. Crazy.

  • hummingbirds are wonderful and interesting animals. their humming kinda calms me. thanks for the video. five stars.

  • This is wonderful to watch. I have just come into the world of hummers. I put a feeder next to my window. I then put a second one out because I have one that keeps chasing the others away. I feel sorry for the others. Any suggestions?

  • My husband has counted 21, but I've only got to 17. This is the first year we put feeders out. They have given us hours of enjoyment.

Thank you for posting this. Awesome!

  • Super footage!

  • Thank You

  • one ruby throut has a nest in my front yard.. really crazy how small it is..

  • It is so much fun. Where are you living. I have only two hummingbirds this summer but they have given me so many wonderful videos. I am in Waxahachie, Tx. from Waldo

  • I have never seen a hummingbird take a bath like that! Too cute!

  • 2:12 so cute!!!

  • The past couple days a ruby-throated hummingbird has been flying up and sitting on our clothes line!

  • BEAUTIFUL THANK YOU FOR POSTING

  • these are some beautiful birds! thank you for posting!

  • One of the coolest things I have ever seen! I have 1 small Hummingbird feeder and am thrilled when I get 1 Hummingbird at a time coming for a drink. This is amazing! You have done a fabulous job!

  • Wow... awesome.

  • i guess that takes care of mosquitos :D

  • I once was standing by a feeder in hopes of getting a close up of these birds, and I waited long enough, a few flew up to drink from the feeder.

Awesome, one was like 8 inches from my face and you can feel the wind from his wings!

It's so cool how they fly out a few feet to check on other birds in the area, and then fly back in to drink.

Funny how some are territorial, chase some others away from that feeder.

The bird who was 8 inches from did not seen to mind me right at the feeder.

  • I have been there and it is really neat to be that close.

  • bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • The sound of hummers - nothing better!

  • Wow! Beautiful, breathtaking video.

  • Thanks for the kind words JM - please share this link with your friends

  • man .. great vid.

  • Thanks Jeff

  • I love Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds! They're so pretty!

  • Beautiful. Love the videos after the 7 minute mark. A swarm of hummers!

  • holy shit these things fly really fast, and flaps like over 9000 times a second

  • it's only 50 times a second, still extremely fast though

  • it's closer to 70 and yes that is extremely fast : )

  • lovely video!

    5 out of 5!

if i could rate it higher i would do so

  • Great job. Wonderful, Wonderful. It is so much fun to have a hobby like this. If you have time take a look at mine feeding from my mouth. Thanks again for a wonderful video, you did a great job.

  • When I start getting them they stay - to me that means I don't get any migrating north. In August is when I get the southern migration. I only have 4-10 during April thru July and 30-50 Aug-Sep

  • i wrapped red t shirts around the poles i keep my feeders on, and it seems to work in attracting them

been several days since i hung mine, and they are constant visitors during the daylight hours. probably the same birds. i imagine they have taken up residence here now

  • Absolutely brilliant. Obviously a labour of love. Well done and thank you for sharing this with us.

  • Thanks it is my retirement hobby and I do enjoy it.

  • This is probably the most amazing video I have seen! You did one hell of a job!!!

  • Thank You!

  • This site is AWESOME;Thank-You for the opprotunity to come here,I have yet to put my feeders up ,but have a question before I do .I had such trouble with bees at my feeders.,They were so bad I would have to hose off the feeders to fill them ,and so many bees inside the feeder I noticed they seem to run off my Hummers ,any input on solving this problem would be appreciated

  • I replied to this and it must not have been added. Bees are tough to do anything about. I have read these two suggestions 1 no yellow on your feeder 2 feeder that will not let sugar water splash upon the port (flower) the saucer type of feeder

  • this is amazing how you feed them from your hands

i have 3 feeders out in different areas of the yard, and within 10 minutes of hanging them yesterday, i had my first visitors..man were they hungry!!

  • Thanks - I don't have any hummers as of today 4/12 but feeders are up.

  • oh thanks a lot for your reply :)

I will continue to give sugar 1 cup of sugar and 4 cups of water...

God bless you and your love to the hummingbirds...I am sure that everytime that you are caring them, God is smiling :D

  • Really sweet and lovely...

Is very blessed to have so good friends around...:)

Tell me what do you put inside a water that they love so much like this to come there to drink the water ?

I used to put sugar, but someone told me that is not good to hummingbirds...

    Thanks for the images...

    God bless you

    Maria from Brazil

  • Hi Maria, Someone mistakenly gave you the wrong advice. Sugar is the only thing you add to water to make food for hummingbirds. 1 cup of sugar and 4 cups of water is what you want to use - do not add any other ingredients to the mixture. That produces nectar close to what they get from flowers. For feeder feeding red colored food is not necessary.

  • Yes it was hard to take her in but I did it. I am waiting for them to call me back with some kind of status. She was almost dead when I found her and after 24 hrs. of feeding she was 75% better. I hope they fix her wing & foot.

  • cool video.. I rescued one yesterday on my driveway! she has a hurt wing and foot. To see the video search: klos1971

there are 5 video's of her

  • Thanks for taking the hummer to get the help it needed. Rehabbers can help with broken wings, legs, etc.

  • Wow we get mabye 5 near us but at some parts you had like 25 and I would be scared to go outside haha. Very amazing.

  • It was a thrill to have all the hummers around for southern migration. I would like to have that many all summer.

  • These are beautiful clips. Hummingbirds are fearless. Thanks for sharing them.

  • love your site, the videos, everything! have loved HBs since I was about 8 years old; now I"m 60. this is absolutely amazing. I've shared your website with lots of other HB lovers! keep up the good work!

    Deborah

  • Thanks for sharing my site with others - that is the only way people know about it. I am glad you visited and enjoyed your visit.

  • Our hummingbirds came back. And I'm happier than ever.

  • Great! It won't be long until we get our ruby-throats back.

  • what were they drinking

  • Clear sugar water is the only food I normally use. In the palm feeding I chose to use store bought red hummingbird food mix. It only took a few times using red and then I went to plain sugar water and it still visited my hand. I don't know of any absolute proof that the red store bought food mix is harmful but I choose to use plain sugar water because it is much cheaper.

  • Please give me some clues of what I can do to increase the birds. We have hanging plants, colorfull bushes, (butterfly & others) and have feeders... there is a good amount activity on hot days 3-4 birds every 5-10 minutes and less on cooler days. They seem very timid when there is movement by us, but if we sit next to the feeders and don't move, they will come right up to the feeders. As soon as we move, even just a little they fly away. Again a great video....Please respond back.

  • You described their behavior exactly. They are afraid of any motion, they have great vision and they will leave instantly. The more you have the braver they are. They will accept you sitting perfectly still around them until you move. Clean feeders, fresh sugar water and a variety of flowers are what we can provide for them. Trees and water will help them choose to stay around. (Salvias, Sages, Lantanas, Coral Honeysuckles, Cypress Vines, Cardinal Climbers Vines, Bee Balm & Lobelia Cardinalis)

  • Thanks. Maybe we don't live in a migrating zone and will only get a few each year.

  • Dear russlouky: This is a great video. How do you get so many h birds. We live in Maryland and get about 3 to 4 a year at my 3 feeeders and love to sit on the deck and watch them. The hotter the days the more activity we get but it's nothing like you have. We get 3-4 chasing each other and 2 at a time feeding with the 3rd buzzing around. It's our summer entertainment. Please give me some clues of what I can do to increase the birds around my house. Another paragraph will follow this one.

  • no i know why its called a humming bird, cuz it flaps its wings so fast its humming,

    DUh im stupid

  • I saw my first hummingbird today. At first I thought it was a large bug, but then I saw it was a hummingbird! I was really excited!

  • Keep that feeder up with fresh food and you may have him/her for a few days or weeks.

  • Beautiful!! Will ck out your website, also. We have a ruby throated that was so possessive of our 2 feeders we call him Rowdy. However, a youngster (greenish-brown) has seemed to hold his own & taken over for the most part. We'll plant some lantana & get more feeders for next season. Thanx for such a wonderful video.

  • I love the humingbird as it was my grandmothers favorite too.... she used to sit by her window in her rocking chair and just wait anxiously for them to come and feed.... I myself, have what I call a bird sanctuary at our camp site but not near as beautiful as yours.... my hubby makes sure all the little creatures are well fed ... I am not sure how to post my videos.... I am a newbie so can use some help or tips as to how to do it. Thank you for sharing! Jeanette

  • I used to be scared of hummingbirds because I thought they were huge bugs!!!

  • Me too. I thought they were wasps or bumblebees.

  • ME TOO!!!!

  • Awesome, video, thanks for sharing.

  • Awesome video! one question tho, how do you keep the bees away?

  • Hi,

You can't keep honey bees away - they love sugar water. Wasp, yellow jackets, hornets and carpenter bees I just shoot with a water bottle everytime they land on the feeder while I am photographing. When I am not photographing I hope the feeders I am using will not allow most bees to reach the sugar water and that really helps. Bees are attracted to yellow more than some other colors and a feeder without yellow ports helps. Last, try relocating the feeders and the Hummingbirds will find them.

  • put a little bit of olive oil around the spouts of the feeders. bees don't like the scent of the olive oil, but it doesn't bother the hummingbirds.

this footage is amazing! i want that to be my back yard. :)

  • This is really amazing, I have never gotton a humming bird to do this by it feeding in your hand! I named my humming birds that come around every june and august, Rose which is all red, Red Neck which has a red neck and Jayd that is all green, and Chester which had orange on his brest,

  • just awesome!!! thanks - you gave me some pointers as well.. gr8 video!

  • Wonderful video--thanks.

I just put up two feeders in June and had a hummingbird that very day. A mother who was feeding young.

I now have at least 5, counting the mother-4 of her fledglings and a male who I believe is responsible for all the youngins!

What a wonderful and inexpensive hobby-- as long as folks know to KEEP THE FEEDERS CLEAN!

    Anyway-thanks for your wonderful videos.

Can you tell me how you got that male to almost eat out of you hand? Mine are still quite skiddish of me.

  • Thanks, it is good to know people enjoy the videos and please visit my website e-hummingbirds. com

  • Very cool! Thanks for sharing. =) They're so cute when they bathe. Btw, what type of hummingbird is shown at 2:31-2:55?

  • All Hummingbirds in my videos are Ruby-throated adult males & females or Ruby-throated immature males & females. The one in that particular time slot is an immature male. He was born a few months earlier and is starting to show red on his throat, and still has the white tips on his tail feathers in the video. This summer (2008) when he returned to the USA he was an adult male with the red throat and no white tips on his tail feathers. Who knows, he may be one of the adult males here at my house.

  • how many flaps do the do one second?

  • 50 plus times per second - in some cases much faster - such as the male doing his U shape flight to impress the female. Check out my website e-hummingbirds for links to sites that give lots of information on Hummingbirds.

  • 3:30 haha----looks like petrol-station LOL :D

  • i too very much enjoy hummingbird and have 4 and i am wondering how do yours not fight all the hummingbirds at my house are very agressive except for mates and at other people's houses i have been to they also fight and 2nd how did you attract so many i can obviously tell you have been feeding for years and the birds trust you

  • Hummingbirds will always chase/fight because it is their God given instinct which keeps them in great shape. They could never survive the long hard flight they endure each migration if they weren't exactly like they are. The fewer you have the more they fight. They think they are chicken hawks. LOL

I have many feeders up and clean with fresh food & many flowers they love all over my backyard.

  • Wow, that's amazing. There are so many!

  • Wow! And I am excited about my three....LOL

  • wow they sure fly fast!

  • That is absolutely amazing. I didn't know that what you did here was even possible.

  • russlouky, I must say I admire this privilege that you have and at the same time envy you to a certain extent. I live in the Caribbean and have been able to attract only 4 species to my 2 and sometimes 3 feeders. NEVER have I gotten a chance to feed any from my hands. You are certainly inspiring me to give it a try though. :) Thanks for sharing this awesome composition.

  • wow! I wish I had one hummer and you have dozens!

They certainly dont seem afraid of you. Are they as trusting as they appear, or is it that they know you and are comfortable around you?

  • It is their natural instinct to be afraid of people. After hours of seeing me video taping, photographing, putting out feeders with fresh food and enjoying all the plants I have for them, they decide "that old man is not going to harm us" LOL

So far this summer none of them have made that decision and I await the newborns because they are not afraid of anything. All Hummingbirds are braver during southern migration because their instinct tells them to fill up every chance they get.
