I bought this album when i was about ten years old. (My step dad loved jazz and influenced me greatly) I can still listen to this and get the same pleasure 30 years down the line. I'm glad i had that step dad :-)
I have trouble concentrating when working on homework, (I'm a college student), but Mr Brubeck and Coltraine have been helping me concentrate and block out everything around me
@guitardouche666 the drums are actually playing 6/4 but you could say they play 3 bars of 2/4 while the piano plays 2 bars of 3/4, but it's much more linear and reasonable to say it's all in 6 straight away...
Sweet Jazz! for another treat, check out these guys who are jazz masters and big band swingers. Cool combo you will dig. search cinnamon doll jazz. should be first video up. enjoy!
Nobody plays with the 'tempo' as these guys do. They go from 3/4 to 4/4 in a jiff... And they're the only assemble to paly a 7/4 (Unsquare Dance) music.
The example is irrelevant, why you ask? because a comparison between her music and this was not drawn (your example is flippant). The comment is also not out of place because it is my OPINION and I believe what I want and say what I want, I made no objective claims (note: I said, "I think"). However, I will concede that Brubeck is a superior musician. HAVE A GOOD ONE,seriously do have a good one.
revolutionary album. they say if a martian came to earth he'd shuffle through tens of thousands of jazz albums until he stumbled upon one not written in 4/4
The first song I ever heard by Dave Brubeck & the quartet was called "Quiet Girl" it was on a special album released by Goodyear or Curtis Mathis for it's customers back in the 60s (back in the day when banks, gas stations, etc would give you free stuff). I always loved that song but I can't find it anywhere.
There are not many that "Inspire" other artists to do great work. Brubeck is one of them. His motifs were ground breaking. A lot of his inspiration can be found in many artists during the 60's and 70's. Another of the great ground breaking inspirations was Frank Zappa. Even M Jackson copied from him. The Bee Gee's copied from him. The Beach Boys and Beatles even copied from him. But I feel still that Brubeck broke much of the Ice and put music in the modern world.
Listen to this song from 1:00. Doesn't it sound like they're quoting the Beatles' "All My Loving"? But this recording predates the Beatles, so can it be Paul was inspired by this song?
@Anihilist I hate musical prejudice. And even if it were shit, can't you see my comment has nothing to do with musical quality? I'm just comparing the melody! I can't believe there are still Beatles haters in 2010. How old are you, 90?
@EmilioPacheco 20, can't stand people comparing everything to those overrated bastards. I think it is an injustice to compare someone like Dave Brubeck to a group of retards that are even able to hold a candle to him.
@EmilioPacheco Paul had a lot of influence from his father and the Jazz records. Dear o`l dad exposed him to many great Standards in that day considered to be breakthrough originals. Ergo the paranoia Pail faced when he woke up from a dream. He had a dream in which he wrote YESTERDAY. He played it for everyone he new asking if it had already existed somewhere. He was certain it belong to some jazz genius.
@EmilioPacheco U r right....great observation but this has happened for another song also...if you listen to "And I love her" and "Autumn leaves" (0:54 on) by Cannonball Adderley (fet. Miles Davis and released 1958) they follow the same structure.
Magic, I not the drummer was trippin when he starts playing out of 3/4 lol

this song is soo complex. at 1:11 the bass and piano are playing 3/4 time, the drums are playing 2/4 time, and i think the sax in playing 4/4 time.

@yerfavoritegreg His father was a musician and the music his band played was a bit jazzy. It's possible the McCartneys had this album.

I think both kind of artists/musicians were, still are great in their own categories.
My 6 years old thaughter loves little mermaid theme music, how should I call her, a retard?
Music is so subjective that this kind of comment is out of place.
But yet if you ask me who do I consider better, Beatles or Brubeck?
Mr. Brubkeck I would say.

Yes, the riff is a perfect match for "All My Loving". I have wondered myself about whether the Beattles picked this up for thier song.
In todays litigious world, they'd of been sued.
