A very young girl (Imogen?) senses that her parents aren't in love. After her father has gone to work, she catches her mother having sex with another man on the sofa. She feels sick to her stomach and confronts her mother, who makes up a story. She wants to tell her father of the treason, but he's not around. She gets more and more upset and confused, but she has nobody to talk to. The "little bird" is a child's playmate. It's departure at the end symbolizes the girl's loss of innocence.
four letter word, it's just not sitting.. (it .. Lies?)
Really love the feeling of isolation that this song describes, the wishing to be a part of something but realizing from afar that it's not all sunshine but that there's the chance of getting hurt by opening up.. That's the feeling I get though, could be wrong.. But to me, the song means alot! <3
love the song, but I think it could have done without the pauses, and the catchy chorus tune could have been kept more consistent and evolved into more of a base than changing every time.
@muzafar001 thanks, I'm glad you like it. it took some time to make, first I had some ideas as I was listening to the song, then put those ideas on paper and then in the video. so, there it is. I wonder if Imogen watched it by mistake...
I had a hard time pushing pause when I had to leave my computer...I really just wanted to turn up the volume as loud as it would go so I could hear it while I was in the other room.
This is... wow. I mean you hear all this rock and pop and rap in our generation and we forget about the gentle and beautiful side of music, just like this. The voice... oh god bless whoever sang this, she has the voice of an angel.
@Crothonora Well this is only my opinion, but I think it's about a family that was murdered, but everything looks perfect on the outside and all the evidence of murder is hidden.
@Crothonora I read somewhere that it is about an abusive family, and it makes sense... all this perfect picture, yet things festering where others can't see, rats in the kitchen... and there's an attempt to escape (some encoded message he would only get), but I'm not sure it works. It's a beautiful song, but so very sad.

Funny how there are no comments as to the actually meaning of this song. More proof that most people are ignorant when listening to music. They just hear a pleasing and good sound and go with it no matter what the content.
@jessicadelcolle whoanora does have a point though, people should listen to what Imogen Heap was saying through her lyrics. It really adds to the beauty of the song when you realize that it's about someone being trapped in an corrupted (probably abusive) household talking to a free, innocent little bird. Lyrics do matter, they're the poetic essence of a piece, that Imogen Heap really does a good job of including in her music :)
@DeathToNavi I agree. People should also learn to accept other opinions too. And too bad not many people actually KNOW what they are listening to. If it sounds pretty it must be about something pretty. Oh well..
@DeathToNavi I couldn't agree more. Lyrics really are wonderful, especially Imogen Heap's-- they're always like a dream. I just wish whoanora could have stated that more like you did.

Saw Immi for the second time two days ago.As usual, brilliant!
I would love to know the real meaning of this song but I suspect it's a mixture of things. It seems to speak of a situation where what's on the surface hides what's happening in reality (manicured lawns but rats in the kitchen. Smiles that don't reach the eyes hence the 'absent creases around them) and makes me wonder if it's anything to do with the separating of Immi's parents when she was 12 (hence the childhood games references)
@SteviesSister I heared that it's about her parents separation when she was young. The song has a vary fantasy and child-like or even dreamy essence to it. It totally would make sense, true or not.
p.s. I want to meet her!!!!! you're sooo lucky!! =)
@jmafiddle Thanks for confirming that! I'd love to meet Immi too. The closest I've gotten was eye contact at Sheffield. I had planned to wait behind afterwards but had no pen on me and nothing for her to sign (which would have been an excuse to approach her) so I chickened out and went back to my guest house, kicking myself. As it happened she never came out to meet fans that night anyway!
i went to see imogen recently but i had a seizure half way through and missed rest :( she is amazing and pardon my screen name please i was a very naive teen when i set up this account haha
@snugglebunnie1717 not really, 'god' doesn't give us answers because the human race would abuse and manipulate it... Warp it, miss-use it, ect. We depend heavily on the little bird because he don't know what is going on, we need answers which the little bird has. With many answers the little bird would dissapear completly...
i think this is about how American homes can seem perfect on the outside, but that each family member something they're hiding, like a dirty secret or some sort of strees. The little bird may represent a family member that has all these unspoken secrets and issues and at the end has either died or left the home for hopes of something better...
This song reminds me of The Raven by Edward Allen Poe and the T. V. series the Gates. I love how Imogen Heap was able to make the song sound both light-hearted and sinister at the same time.
@smoochpony1 Hmm, sort of... but (Edgar) Allen Poe is not hiding anything :o And has a darker side, this song doesn't really have a dark side. plus the bird disapears.. the raven stays on the door frame to taunt him. Nevermore ;D
@starjeweller That's not entirely true. For instance, one of the things I don't like about Imogen Heap is her reliance on the vocorder in almost every song. Compared to artists who simply sang a song (pre-2000s, mostly) along with music, Heap and everyone else use a ton of post-editing effects. Her music is highly stylized and intends to sound simple and uncluttered, but the amount of studio tech that is applied to the final product is considerable.
@exmortis but whats impressive is that imogen does that all herself. its still her work. her art. not lady gaga and rihanna and nicki minaj or jason derulo sending it to 5 different producers and 4 studios for one song.....I still hold more respect for Imogen

Ive never heard of Imogen Heap before, but our Marching Band is playing this and Earth this year, now i cant stop listening to them... Little Bird is pretty peaceful, and trippy at the end with overlapping lines...
Just read the comments down there about the Hunger Games series, don't understand how the series was brought up, but they're making a movie of the Hunger Games, you know.
And then I think, if the movie had this song on it. Perfect. I do hope that whoever is making the movie happens to read this comment.
i absolutly love this song its amazing i have never heard anything like it and the girl who sings it is so good at singing....i dont think theres anyone that can sing like her
I actually thought it was kind of like a disturbia thing but the other way around. The victim (the bird) is an onlooker to this innocent seeming house but it's really actually the house of a murderer or something and this guy's killed the onlooker in the end.
@ISayJessYes thats is exactly what i thought i thought the bird was the only witness to a murder that he just happened to witness while he was flying one day
I find this song is amazingly chilling. On the surface, it seems innocent e.g. 'the clink of morning cheers', but underneath there's something very sinister about the song. I think the bird is meant to see some sort of 'perfect' family.. but then, there's actually something very wrong, e.g. 'A family wiped up, j cloth cleaned
Unsaid, festers in the throws of the sofa ' It makes me think there has been murder, and the bird knows exactly what's going on.. makes me skin crawl, but amazing! :)
@jasperfan123 I'm not sure what the books have to do with this lovely song, but someone said something about them...I thought it was you...? maybe i was wrong. Haha sorry for the confusion.
I agree. It's about the fact that people lie to look good but keep secrets under the surface! I believe she's singing about someone in perticular..but For me... I think it's about my mate Tan.

Just read the comments down there about the Hunger Games series, don't understand how the series was brought up, but they're making a movie of the Hunger Games, you know.
And then I think, if the movie had this song on it. Perfect. I do hope that whoever is making the movie happens to read this comment.

@fallonrenee1 there sure isn't, Imogen Heap is one of a kind :) And the music she writes... it's out of this world, simply magic!

I actually thought it was kind of like a disturbia thing but the other way around. The victim (the bird) is an onlooker to this innocent seeming house but it's really actually the house of a murderer or something and this guy's killed the onlooker in the end.
That's what I think anyway.
ISayJessYes 1 year ago 6
@ISayJessYes thats is exactly what i thought i thought the bird was the only witness to a murder that he just happened to witness while he was flying one day
charmedpoison 1 year ago 2
I find this song is amazingly chilling. On the surface, it seems innocent e.g. 'the clink of morning cheers', but underneath there's something very sinister about the song. I think the bird is meant to see some sort of 'perfect' family.. but then, there's actually something very wrong, e.g. 'A family wiped up, j cloth cleaned
Unsaid, festers in the throws of the sofa ' It makes me think there has been murder, and the bird knows exactly what's going on.. makes me skin crawl, but amazing! :)

jasperfan123 1 year ago
@jasperfan123 I'm not sure what the books have to do with this lovely song, but someone said something about them...I thought it was you...? maybe i was wrong. Haha sorry for the confusion.

Love this song, but the lyrics are "Absent creases" not "Haps and creases". Thats according to the CD.

I agree. It's about the fact that people lie to look good but keep secrets under the surface! I believe she's singing about someone in perticular..but For me... I think it's about my mate Tan.
