the pricing has caused them issues to find people to be able to make it for that..so they have been wasting time trying to get it made typical uk companies!!
It really amazes me that they can make even this good computer for such a low price. Are there any 50$ computers with maybe 2-3 times the performance? The browser opened only little bit slower than my moms laptop does. Sure it is not a problem with the hardware but rather broken Vista but it is still impressive.
It is really a cheap computer, I know the CPU is 700Mhz, now I use a Samsung Galaxy S2 and before I had a Samsung Galasxy S (with 1GHz CPU), I have realized that the amount of RAM has been the main factor for the poor performance of Gaxaly S(1), How much RAM does the RaspberryPI have?
@qhoa1385 No it's actually 2012 at the soonest. They have just got 100 beta boards with no components on them in the door, and they all need soldering components and testing before any release. The first 100 boards will go into some sort of an auction and the price will therefor be far more then the 25/35 dollar.
Nokia have taken the next 400 boards. Consumers can most likely start buying them on their website some time into 2012 but the release date have already slipped 4 months
What I'm wondering is what they want kids to program with, what makes this more newbie-coder friendly than another PC (besides the price, but c'mon, which kid that doesn't have a PC in his house is gonna want to learn programming)? C and the fact that there aren't that many other programs on ARM? C++? That would seem a little hard to teach a kid the basics of programming. Maybe Python? Would love to hear more about that aspect of it,
@Gunner3210 In its origin, π is pronounced "pee" if you will. As a non-phonetic language, English gets a lot of these wrong. The whole raspberry wordplay is lost of course.
@Charbax in spanish, french, italian, portuguese, and in the origilal language PI sounds like "pee", not as "pie". American english has a lot of pronunciations errors. Probably it's because american english is bassically a "cowboys/railroad worker language"
@Gunner3210 In Greek it's ['pi] and that's also how we say it here. I don't know why English speaking people always try to make their special way to say things :)
@HurdUser Actually, I don't think Amazon is selling it below the average production cost once they manufacture millions of the Fire. They are not making much profit on the hardware for sure, they only plan to profit from content, extra product sales, extra prime subscription sales etc.
Open-source! WE can now build this little 25 dollar gem into almost anything... and that Broadcom ARM11 chip is so amazing for it's size, cost and power consumption. If this little thing had USB2 on it you could easily turn it into a HD fullframe video camera using the chip for image processing, noise reduction, image stabilization and auto focus. You would need a lot more memory than 250 MB though and connection to a SSD drive!
I'm just disappointed a bit about the new power supply for the final version that will be mainly linear so low efficiency compared to a DC-DC converter.
And probably there will be not enough data (specification) for the SOC.
Seems that the SD access is quite slow not sure if this will improve.
Still hopping to see this before the end of this year.
Absolutely amazing device at the price-point. This is competing at the Arduino price, but offers orders of magnitude additional functionality and performance. Incredible engineering - thank-you for making this possible!
One downside is "only" 10/100 ethernet and not 1000 plus USB3... or, call me a NAS.
Also, if they wanted to demonstrate decent software performance then they should have had a Qt5/QML demo as that already takes advantage of the proprietary GPU EGL driver. And if education is a target then QML/Javascript is the new 21st century LOGO.. with touch-ready interface built in. Showing a slow stuttering old-world desktop interface was disappointing.
@mc0nstable The RaspberryPi is amazing and you can look at the official website to see "performance" demonstrations with HD video or QT. Videos that are in YouTube too.
Absolutely will do, maybe a couple of them. It surprises me somewhat it's taken 5 years (since 2006) to get this formula right and that neither the Chinese or Indian manufacturers managed to pull it off first. I know about the Indian "$10" laptop effort but it's nowhere near as performant as this device. Well done RPI, you have nailed the right combination, including being a non-profit organisation, to finally provide "earth computer one".
