I used to take Shotokan Karate, I now have recently started taking MMA (Shootfighting and BJJ), other than that I have some training in Army Combatives. By no means am I an expert. However, I've always been told to never kick an attacker who is wielding a knife. Some of the largest veins and arteries you have run along the inside of your thigh. Thus if a knife wielding attacker cut the inside of your thigh you could bleed out very quickly.
@markmwilson22 Hi Mark--your instructors may have meant well but forensic homicide analysis (and common sense) tells us that the heart, liver, throat, face, etc. are far worse targets than an ass-kicking leg--especially with a boot at the end of it. Read similar threads in these videos...
I was asked very nicely to clean up a comment i made with regards to this well executed video. It went something like this....At last a video that makes sense, watch and learn grapplers,You're dealing with a frenzied attack guys.Brilliant video well executed 5 star.Further to this i don't want anybody think i am a grappler hater,i am not i have a high grade in Taiho Jutsu, but too much illogical training goes on,stuff that would get you stabbed.
You favorited this video: "How to Counter a Knife Threat: Bob Kasper: The Lost Tapes ." In that video, the man used basic judo to neutralize and take down the attacker with the knife. His judo was not so good, cause anyone who has studied knows O-soto-gari is the combat throw one uses once a grip like that is established. If the blast doesn't knock the guy out, a simple arm bar destroys the arm holding the knife. It is foolish to think grappling is not useful in combat.
@NIKandSi Police forensic homicide evidence will tell you that grappling someone with a knife exposes you to more major organ injury than ground kicking, despite what you see in movies and TV. What was good about the video mentioned was the fact that he tells you to "get off-line" from the knife. Try this: have a partner with a greased arm (representing your blood) and holding a magic marker, stab at you at full speed like a jackhammer. Not only will you not lock his arm...
...you'll be marked up like bad graffiti. Meaning: that your lock, grab, grapple or throw would turn you into hamburger helper; liver, heart, lung, eye, throat damage, etc. The first strike to the knifer's throat is part of a barage to target areas. If you focus on wrestling the knife it just makes it easier for you to bleed out faster as you accumulate deep puncture cut after cut. No one's going to give you points for a nice throw if you're dead.
Police all around the world pay the Gracies to teach them how to grapple so they can try to avoid becoming a statistic. We could also point to Army Combatives, a.k.a. Gracie Jiu-jitsu. Check this out: in October of 1996, in Philadelphia, Courtney Beswick grabbed and threw an armed robber over his shoulder, breaking the man's neck. He was an expert at wrestling / judo and the bad guy clearly didn't know how to land. Beswick was also blind. Judo: it's that powerful.
@NIKandSi The fact that people all over the world pay the Gracies is meaningless. Millions of people smoke even tho it could kill them. The Gracies have a giant mass media appeal via sports; those "in the know" in the military know that teaching BJJ was a recruitment "tool" for young men to raise enlistments. Military insiders also know...
@mattkovsky ...that there are serious problems with applying BJJ to war; they prefer we returned to World War II Applegate Kill or Get Killed CQC. Google "Teaching Soldiers to Die."
"...if you can get up quick and run, just run in the first place!" Wisest words I have ever heard about defending yourself against a knife wielding attacker.
or use head and heart to TALK to him... chances are if you are intelligent and loving about it [rather than fearfully stupid] you can avoid him using it. Sometimes not but if you attack you may just have turned a nonviolent event into your doom.

This is a really great series mattkovsky! It's really growing on me, the concepts, ideas, and realities of real street violence. Thank you so much!

@mattkovsky Actually I'm quite content for now but if you want, ground fighting strikes on bags or pads. Good luck and happy training!
