Thank you - thank you for posting - and Thank God for Vi. Need more info on additional early live recorded performances of ethnic female blues/jazz/soul saxaphonists.
Concerning Vi Redd: there's an interesting letter of Vi's to Downbeat Magazine where Vi really rips apart Joni Mitchell's stab at The Art Of Charles Mingus...Being A Los Angeles Woman I figure Vi knew what she was writing.
She did a great gig at the Pizza Express, Soho, London in 1983. Her sound was so gorgeous - like sunlight shining through honey - that I did not think I could go onliving without that sound around me every day. Next day I went out and bought my first alto - took me two years heard slog just to learn how to blow it right!
Vi Redd could sing...and play, too. She could give a lot of men run for their money.
The band sounded great behind her, Sounded like Thad Jones arrangement, he wrote so well for the sax section. You don´t hear that sound too often on any so called jazz festivals today.......

Redd's father was singer & drummer Alton Redd, from Baton Rouge, La. He toured and recorded with Kid Ory's band. Thanks for this great music!

It's criminal how under-recorded Redd has been in her lifetime. I'm lucky enough to own a couple of her scarce LPs, but nothing live.
So terrific. Thanks for putting this up! 8)
