Man, what a performance(!). My wife and I saw him do this live in Chicago and I won't ever forget it.
I hope this guy knows that so many people have gotten pleasure out of his gut-wrenching performance, and his absolute ability to make that trumpet "sing".
Man, what a mastery he has over that horn. Wish I had that gift (!).
WOW... WOW ... WOW, my husband just showed these 'guys' to me, I am in total AWE... Brilliant playing and the show itself, is stunning... I am now offically a fan and will watch all the vid's on here @Allicat8318 thank you for posting musical magic ... Best regards from Wales UK :0X
I think I was just one of many who got caught up in the emotion in this song the first time I heard it and ended up crying. This is such an amazing performance....my only regret was watching it with stupid kids in my band class who could not appreciate good music. xD
nowadays everyone gets hung up on singers and lyrics but what most people forget is the band that brings those lyrics to life makes them have meaning and feeling then you have a man like this who stands on a chair floating in mid-air who never says a word yet you feel everything he feels i feel sorry for tomorrows child this will all be lost to digital soundboards
Mr.Harloff was my Soprano tech when i marched with crown a few years ago (more than a few actually lol) when i asked him what made him so sorroful when playing "loss" he told me most people would dread the loss of a loved one or a family member, for him it was the loss of the ability to play.
@Sobertripper no piepeep90 is totally right. There is guard movement called "In The Wood" it's absolutely intense but for whatever reason most of the guard movements minus colorwheel and part of lemon techno aren't found on youtube. I've been looking for it too.
ben harloff is my band teacher i was listening to marilyn manson in class and he came over and took one of my earphones and started listening to it then he started headbanging it was awesome
George N. Parks passed away last night. As an icon to the band world, and in my life, I find it oddly appropriate that this song is where I find my comfort.
I took my dad to see this in New York back in 2003. And now he is gone so this song means so much more to than before! Thank you for posting it! It sucks that this show didn't survive the cut from 9/11.
Yeah I worked with Ben Harloff when I marched drum corps in 2002. Amazing player and musical genius. He would practice sometimes after rehearsal and we would sometimes just stop whatever we were doing and go take a listen.
wow. i have watched this countless times. everytime i watch it i am still amazed at the emotion in this song from the perfomers. also i cant believe how theatrical their movements and expressions are. its absolutely beautiful.
Its incredible how much emotion he puts into it, he makes it so beautiful and powerful, theres so much emotion it ust radiates to the viewers, those tears bring out even more emotion
my fav piece from blast... makes you feel so sad by the end... it also sent chills down my spine when u first hear the trumpet guy hovering on the chair
im glad cause he is amazing. He has a beautiful sound and a beautiful trumpet. One day i hope to get that kind of sound out of my Getzen 300 trumpet. I would love to sound like that.....Man, i've got alot of work to do.
the guy that comes down on the chair had cancer and that is why he doesnt have a harness on becuz he new that he was goin to die anyway. he also did die from the cancer
I found the original recording! Don Ellis was a genius for making this song! The album is called "Tears of Joy"
and the original had a string section and it was twice as long! but it wasn't as precise on the timing as Blast did it though but the emotional build up was there! :)
I'm glad people like real music, instead of the B.S. they put on the radio these days. It's depressing..... But when I come on youtube, I am happy that there are many views and comments for good songs such as this.
when my friend was telling me how he got him to play the role...they told him to think of the saddest thing in his life...they told him to think of what life would be like without music. imagine that
The guy's name is Ben - he was one of my brass instructors at the Cadets of Bergen County in '99 (yeah, I'm old). The chair thing is awesome - but no more than I'd expect from him or any of these other amazing athletes. Not to mention that he was the first soloist in Malaguena, and held the last note of his solo for, what - 20 seconds? More?
Ben is an unreal musician. And, actually, a freaking awesome dude.
in malaguena he held the last note for 20-21 measures with a meater signature of 3,4........i love this song the trumpet part in it is just amazing espically at the climax where they r all playing at 2:10
O.K. But i gues, that is out off my possibilities to go to America just for one concert.:-)
Is this performance finished? I've seen it just once in tv (i think 4 years ago) and i was charmed. How and when Blast! started?I don't know if they ever had concert in Europe. That would be amazing.
i KNOW the guy that comes down on the chair. he now teaches a high school group in minnesota... he's a great actor, but he was also circular breathing for the most part. he's an amazing performer!!! one of my favorite men on the planet!
The amazing thing is, the guy playing the trumpet, coming down on the chair. His dad died something like the night before the performance, and he still played this song. Hence the tears rolling down his face as he played.
Ok, when I was taught how to play trumpet, I was told to keep my pinky on top of the ring and thats how I've always played!! Now what's the truth?? Pinky on top or in the ring?!?!?!

With your fingers flattened, you're pushing the valve down still but there's a tiny bit of force pushing to the side as well. Once or twice, obviously it's not a real problem, but you can imagine this isn't very good for a horn over a long period of time.
That's told to newer players to keep them from pressing the trumpet into there face. If you aren't pulling then it isn't a problem. I keep it in there for stability but it really can go either way.
Man, that would suck hardcore! It drives me nuts to get little scratches on mine that you can't even see! I'd hate to drop mine from 15 feet off the ground...whoa.
im doing something similar to blast. we call it music in motion. were doing the song the first circle and its so freaking hard. its odd time. 12/8 and 10/8. its 11 bar phrasing. marching in 12/8 followed by 10/8 is not easy.
He recently released his own instructional DVD for brass called "Release Your Sound"... it has many of the techniques that Carolina Crown, Blast, and Star of Indiana use. If anyone wants to have Ben's tone, check out his DVD.
DAMN! That guy coming down the chair got balls. I'd be so scacred, I'd have a river of crap runninig down my leg.
On a side note...why do the drummers weara martial arts outfitss?! I need to know this. The fact that Iam on my forth beer olny magnifyis my need to know htis.
I don't know exactly but I'll tell you what I think.
Since the show was divided into sections with each section represented by a color they needed something white to contrast it perhaps.
Also during the 'Battery Battle' sequence which featured the percussion only there was a part where they have a blue light on them and you can't see anything but their drums, drumsticks and pants. They might have worn white so the audience could follow their movements.

Also, if I were him, i'd be holding onto that thing tight. Imagine if he dropped his trumpet off that chair =)

Ben Harloff will rock your face off on trumpet.
He recently released his own instructional DVD for brass called "Release Your Sound"... it has many of the techniques that Carolina Crown, Blast, and Star of Indiana use. If anyone wants to have Ben's tone, check out his DVD.

Just some theories.
