The fighting system in this game is easily the best ever. It's so fluid and looks convincing.

is the fighting system just smashing the x button or can you go for huge combos by pressing different keys like in devil may cry?

I haven't played DMC so I can't say. The X button punches, kicks, etc depending on what direction you move the control stick, what the enemy is doing, and how far you are from him. The Y button counters (when you see the blue wavy lines above their heads) and Batman will block and maybe throw a hit or two in. Tapping the right trigger uses the grapple and pulls them to you, left trigger is batarang, B is stun, A+X is throw, B+Y is take down (usually breaks a bone of theirs).
