I'm American. I would agree with the comments in the vid. I would add that the U.S. is geographically large also. I have lived and worked in many states, but never left U.S. soil. Our neighbors (Canada and Mexico) are still a long distance from where I live. If I lived in a tiny country, I think I would visit my neighbors often.

I think that most americans lack experience with overseas travel and cultures beacuse of the geographical boundaries in place. The cost involved in traveling to Europe, Asia and Australia; and the percieved danger of travel to Africa and the Middle East; combined with the distances involved make it more comfortable to stay home - or to travel within the already very large US.
This does seem to have the unfortunate effect of elitist or exclusionary attitudes, but it is not a deliberate crime.
Your point about this separation from the rest of Africa because of ideology - particularly the high degree of westernization of SA is interesting and I am sure valid.

I have seen that a lot during my time in South Africa. You mentioned two things which caught my attention; First South Africa being more westernized then other countries. I think it's yes and no considering the lifestyle of some people but it is not that generalised. I think we often confuse industrialization with westernization and ultimately not being African which are different things.
Wanting to emulate others should not necessarily extend to things such as culture. And that's the second point some people in South Africa are not interconnected with the rest of the continent. It's quite interesting that some music styles are not reffered to their place of origin, such as coupe decale as being Ivorian music, but are rather seen as African. As long as what's happening culturally outside of SA is perceived as exotic and having no links with it, this mentality will prevail.
I am asking myself if the world cup will have an African flavor which reflects all parts of the continent or if people will only try to reflect a South Africa that sees itself as different. The World cup is supposed to be South Africa's but Africa's as well.
We do have this superior attitude, because frankly, we South Africans are just more awesome.

It's a known phenomenon that people tend to try and distance themselves from the people directly around them in either class, financial situation, or indeed as a nation.
I live in the Netherlands and there is definitely a bigger desire here to show the world that we are different from Germany or Belgium (which we border with), but no such desire for France or Spain. I think this phenomenon also plays a part in how South Africans view Africa and I could imagine the same for Egyptians etc.

Here in the States, we divide ourselves up too. There's the North vs. the South. Us Southerners are typically stereotyped as evangelical Christian fundamentalists that have minimal education and live in the country. I'm American. I would agree with the comments in the vid. I would add that the U.S. is geographically large also. I have lived and worked in many states, but never left U.S. soil. Our neighbors (Canada and Mexico) are still a long distance from where I live. If I lived in a tiny country, I think I would visit my neighbors often.

I think that most americans lack experience with overseas travel and cultures beacuse of the geographical boundaries in place. The cost involved in traveling to Europe, Asia and Australia; and the percieved danger of travel to Africa and the Middle East; combined with the distances involved make it more comfortable to stay home - or to travel within the already very large US.
This does seem to have the unfortunate effect of elitist or exclusionary attitudes, but it is not a deliberate crime.

I think the only thing SA has better than the rest of Africa is infrastructure and bigger economy.That would not be the case in the next 10 years.Many massive African countries are waking up.I know Ghana and Nigeria are.

Well Khaya, I cannot blame you for thinking that way. South Africa is of course an economic powerhouse on the African continent.
Many African emigrate to South Africa despite the high crime rates because it is much easier to find a job and attain a higher standard of living.
Some African heads of states seek medical services from South Africa.
South Africa does seem a lot different fro the rest of Africa also adding the fact that South Africa is more diverse ethnically than

Some day Ghana will catch up with your country. I am from the US and learned a lot about Ghana from You Tube. Ghana is doing well and they even have an American super market called "Shop-rite"

I always thought Shop-rite was a South African franchise like Game stores.
Shop-rite is also there in poorer African countries like Zambia and Malawi.

I have seen that a lot during my time in South Africa. You mentioned two things which caught my attention; First South Africa being more westernized then other countries. I think it's yes and no considering the lifestyle of some people but it is not that generalised. I think we often confuse industrialization with westernization and ultimately not being African which are different things.

Wanting to emulate others should not necessarily extend to things such as culture. And that's the second point some people in South Africa are not interconnected with the rest of the continent. It's quite interesting that some music styles are not reffered to their place of origin, such as coupe decale as being Ivorian music, but are rather seen as African. As long as what's happening culturally outside of SA is perceived as exotic and having no links with it, this mentality will prevail.

I am asking myself if the world cup will have an African flavor which reflects all parts of the continent or if people will only try to reflect a South Africa that sees itself as different. The World cup is supposed to be South Africa's but Africa's as well.

We do have this superior attitude, because frankly, we South Africans are just more awesome.
We aren't just better than other Africans, we are better than everyone else in the world! Don't forget that!
To be honest, the fact that we have stability, a developed infrastructre compared to the rest of Africa and on average a little more money than the average African, helps. Plus we have South Africans in our country. They don't. So they suck. Lol!

Mind S. Africa have the highest HIV and crime rate than most African countries so it's an assumption based on nothing for S. African to think as such.

Interesting. The phenomenon occurs in reverse in North/Central/South America. It seems each country considers itself better than the country(s) to the south of it.
I wouldn't feel too bad about not knowing much about the rest of your continent: it's a big friggin' continent!!

It's a known phenomenon that people tend to try and distance themselves from the people directly around them in either class, financial situation, or indeed as a nation.
I live in the Netherlands and there is definitely a bigger desire here to show the world that we are different from Germany or Belgium (which we border with), but no such desire for France or Spain. I think this phenomenon also plays a part in how South Africans view Africa and I could imagine the same for Egyptians etc.

I know a lot about Germany France and England but very little about Poland so I don't really blame you I always thought it was odd that we refer to Africa as a unity while you have the largest genetic variety of the world, the most amount of languages of the world, etc etc

Here in the States, we divide ourselves up too. There's the North vs. the South. Us Southerners are typically stereotyped as evangelical Christian fundamentalists that have minimal education and live in the country. The Northerners are thought to be more secular and less kind/rude. Some people feel like there are two Americas. I'm not sure what I feel about that comment.
