Thank you, thank you, thank you, oh omnipotent Troutmaster! May your creole never be in want. May rainbows and goldens the size of dachshunds have to dodge your feet when you wade. OAITW: Legendary! I remember crankin' this stuff up during high school in the mid-'70s and other kids thought I was some kind of freak. Well, ya know what? I WAS and still AM some kind of freak and I wouldn't trade me for the moon! I've worked damn hard to be a freak and I'm damn proud to be one!
Not only is Jerry Garcia a phenomenal guitar player, but he's an awesome Banjo player too! And if there's one thing I noticed about Jerry is that he never played with speed. He kept a great Rhythm and whenever he did solo, he solo'd with feeling and soul and it had a great sound. :-)
Old and in the Way * Jerry Garcia - Banjo and vocals * David Grisman - Mandolin and vocals * Peter Rowan - Guitar and vocals * Richard Greene - Fiddle (3-2-1973 to 5-25-1973) * Vassar Clements - Fiddle (6-5-1973 to 4-28-1974) * John Kahn - Acoustic bass
if any banjo players are interested...a guy in fla. named Alan Dalton wrote a banjo tab book of ever song on this album..note for note...best money spent.
one of the ten best maybe..you got that right...awesome album..rowan, garcia , dawg and vassar were all on top of their game. most of all they were just having fun!!! vasser didn't even know who the grateful dead were when he first started picking with garcia. rowan told me once, they should've been called the SMOKING "GRASS" BOYS!!!! i bet they had a blast!!
Absolutly great stuff. I saw Vassar play his fiddle many a time with a local Jam band Stir Fried, here in NY. His fiddle is magic. They have a great live CD with Vassar that is just killer. stirfried. com / mediaMerch.html They also have some free sets with Vassar, Commander Cody, Tony Trishka and more..
I fucking love and I have to repeat and put emphasis on the love Jerry on the Banjo. It is amazing.
