As for huge portions, maybe that's cultural? Having dinners with other families many parents MAKE their children finish what's on their plates, even if they don't want any more. Or not finishing your meal at someone elses house could be seen as rude. I think there are a lot of factors at play

You're correct, it's extremely expensive, but most people don't look at it like that, they are looking for instant gratification, not long term health. Same with weight loss, Americans spend billions on weight loss drugs and surgeries, it's free to go run or ride your bike, but it takes effort that they aren't willing to give. And I agree, even people below the poverty line could eat healthy if they chose to. But they aren't willing to give up their beer, coffee, fatty foods and of course toys
