I've also heard many people say the Allies didn't do enought to save the Jews, they should have done this or that. The Allies saved the Jews as quick as they could without risking losing the war. It was possible that Germany could have won the war, and today there wouldn't be ANY Jews.

D-Day was most certainly needed. I'll give the Soviets all the credit in the world but they would not have been able to win a war with Germany if the Eastern Front was all SHITler had to worry about. 2) I've never heard of anybody downplaying the Russian contributions to WW2 because of the Cold War. How could anybody dispute what happened in the East when it's as well documented as it is?
Actually mate there is quite a lot of historical evidence that Dday was more a political than military decision. People forget the western allies already had a European front, Italy. If Churchill had had his way all Dday resources would have gone to Italy instead, and there is broad acceptance among many historians that it would have ended the war faster, and kept Russia out of a larger area of Europe.
Sorry, but you cannot equate Italy with Normandy. The Allies making their way up from Sicily to the Swiss border had nowhere near the strategic significance of the Normandy invasion where German forces were directly pushed back into Germany. Yes, Italy needed to be conquered to weaken the Axis but what really needed to happen was D-day in addition to what was already going on on the Eastern front. That's the East/West vice that finally crushed Germany and brought the war to a close.
There was also a plan to invade the Balkans, this was opposed by Stalin as it would have again,limited soviet post war influence in this region. I'm not arguing that dday was pointless, just that it was not militarily necessary, or indeed the best use of allied manpower. Believe me I wrote my dissertation on the subject.
You get what I'm trying to say to SabuPtolemy, D-day was almost the least the Allies could do to stop the Soviets. From 1943 onwards everyone knew Germany would not win the war, from the progress of the war and because Germany was fighting 3/4 of the globe basically alone.
Had the Americans supported the British in a more firm stance versus the Soviets, they would not have had the kind of satellite orbit they had now, probably only Finnish-style allies.
Why does no one ever remember Italy. God damn it the Americans and Brits were on mainland Europe, since Sept 1943 to be precise, July if you count Sicily.

wat u mean the uk did nothing, they defeated the germans in north africa and played a major role in defeating them in western europe as well as fighting against the japanese. They held the germans on their own since 1940.

Apart from being the only country able to effectively defend their lines and prevent German invasion, Britain was also a supplier of weapons to the Russians and was also the rock from which many Czech's, Polish and others that escaped from their occupied countries fought back against the Germans from.

We make jokes about the germans grabbing all the sun loungers on a meditteranean holiday at 6am in morning but thats about as far as it goes.
Theres probably a small minority of idiots who tar all Germans with the same brush.

The Russian army had a shit ass load of soldiers...they simply had too many!
And they made a lot of tanks + the British who bombed german supply lines..
The US just kicked the remaining german home guard and boyscouts the hell out of France, with the help of UK and Canada
The Germans could take a lot....they proved it!

It doesn't matter that Britain and the U.S. had no troops on mainland Europe for a long time. The fact remains that they kept a good chunk of SHITler's armies busy in the West and in North Africa, plus they flew raids behind German lines and damaged the supply lines in the East which became a huge problem for the Wehrmacht and helped the Russians win the war. It all had to tie in in order to succeed - and thank God it did.

D-Day was most certainly needed. I'll give the Soviets all the credit in the world but they would not have been able to win a war with Germany if the Eastern Front was all SHITler had to worry about. It took the Russians, British and the Americans to defeat the Nazis even though the Russians did the bulk of the fighting.

D-day was not needed to defeat Germany, even Churchill admitted this, D-day was aimed at stopping the Soviets before they reached Paris you dummy.
It's hard to swallow for weird nationalist Americans like you, but even the Japanese surrender was finally triggered by the massive deployment of Soviet troops in the last weeks of the war. The Soviets almost destroyed more Japanese units in two weeks than the US did in 4 years.

1) I don't know which historians you hang out with or read but D-day not being necessary to defeat Germany is most certainly not accepted historic doctrine. That's like me quoting the 'esteemed' historian Dr.David Irving on gas chambers and saying the Holocaust as we know it didn't happen.
2) I've never heard of anybody downplaying the Russian contributions to WW2 because of the Cold War. How could anybody dispute what happened in the East when it's as well documented as it is?

Actually mate there is quite a lot of historical evidence that Dday was more a political than military decision. People forget the western allies already had a European front, Italy. If Churchill had had his way all Dday resources would have gone to Italy instead, and there is broad acceptance among many historians that it would have ended the war faster, and kept Russia out of a larger area of Europe.

Sorry, but you cannot equate Italy with Normandy. The Allies making their way up from Sicily to the Swiss border had nowhere near the strategic significance of the Normandy invasion where German forces were directly pushed back into Germany. Yes, Italy needed to be conquered to weaken the Axis but what really needed to happen was D-day in addition to what was already going on on the Eastern front. That's the East/West vice that finally crushed Germany and brought the war to a close.

There was also a plan to invade the Balkans, this was opposed by Stalin as it would have again,limited soviet post war influence in this region. I'm not arguing that dday was pointless, just that it was not militarily necessary, or indeed the best use of allied manpower. Believe me I wrote my dissertation on the subject.

You get what I'm trying to say to SabuPtolemy, D-day was almost the least the Allies could do to stop the Soviets. From 1943 onwards everyone knew Germany would not win the war, from the progress of the war and because Germany was fighting 3/4 of the globe basically alone.
Had the Americans supported the British in a more firm stance versus the Soviets, they would not have had the kind of satellite orbit they had now, probably only Finnish-style allies.

The 250,000 or so campers who did perish were all the result of starvation and diseases such as typhus.
