In Japan this game is called Suiko Enbu: Outlaws of the lost dynasty and the arcade version is different from the console versions. A great fighting game by Data East.
Hey good job on the review man- I had been looking at this one for quite awhile, now I'm sold. This looks like Street Fighter II but with weapons and better graphics- can't pass that up!
I also really enjoy this game. One of the first games I got for the Saturn. One time it glitched when the blue guy was doing his "jump on your shoulders and bite you" attack. I somehow escaped the attack while he was performing the move and he stayed suspended in air as he infinitely continued the move. I had the settings set to no time limit so I was able to pop in a VCR tape and record the scene. I forget what tape it's on but I am sure I will find it and upload it someday.
I love this game, I downloaded it on PSN when it came out. The characters are interesting, the music is awesome, and it has some interesting mechanics. Sad to see it isn't more well known.
@Caztro72 - I love games that make me laugh. There aren't many out there. I wish I could start a game label that makes very comedic games. Who's with me?
This title does look great. I agree that the Saturn took us back to the times of the Neo Geo in many of its 2D titles. That's one of the reasons why I love the Saturn so much. =)
Yeah, the PS1 may have excelled in 3D, the Saturn was a true 2D powerhouse. As you probably know, the Saturn had originally been developed as the ultimate 2D console. But when Sega caught wind of how the PS1 was all about the 3D experience, they quickly gave parallel processor add ons to the Saturn to give it a 3D boost. Unfortunately, this became a strange architecture for those who developed games for the Saturn. That's why it was so hard to code Saturn games. Thanks for watching my video!
I know! Even those who collect for the Saturn don't really acknowledge it as a notable title in the console's library. I really wish they would include the arcade version (Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty) in the upcoming Data East arcade compilation for the Wii. That'd be sweet! And more people will be able to appreciate it!
That will be awesome, The bad thing on this game on its SS version are the slowdowns. American SS version is almost OK in playability with less slowdowns. But i don't know if you have tested the Japanese version (Suiko Enbu)... there the Slowdowns are DAMN TERRIBLE.
I only own the American version, so that is the only one I've played. I didn't know the Japanese version had massive slowdown. That is unusual for the Saturn in general. Data East may have fixed this problem before the game went over seas. I know the Japanese got an upgraded version called Suiko Enebu: Fuunsaiki that included Mizoguchi and Yon Miy from another game called FIGHTER'S HISTORY (another great fighting game). Wonder if that one eliminated the slowdown. Thanks for the info!
Yeah, this game is really a sleeper hit. No one really knows about it. Even my collector's guide gives no description about the game. It just lists it as being in the Saturn library! Thanks for your comment!
LOL! My bad! I mixed two games in one! Thanks for catching my error. I own Burning Rangers and that was the title I was thinking of. But I WISH I had Guardian Heroes too! Thanks for watching my video!
I actually like playing that blue guy too. Throwing frogs and fish is totally wacky. Funny, how the actual names of the charaters never stuck with me as they are too foreign. I'm using GONG SHUN SHENG, which I refer to as "the guy with the demon"! LOL! Thanks for watching!

Yes Fu'un Saiki version is much faster than the first version, too much for me. haha.
Mizoguchi is playable in VS in Special mode in the Playstation's SUIKO ENBU version.
