Ties together with Rapture; the idea that God told her to kill the child. Most of the album tells a single story, sometimes it tells pieces of another. All I know is that the rain falling in the background really sets everything else off in this song perfectly, and the little track at the end of the song on the CD is just fucking incredible. If you ever have the chance, BUY the album and listen to it. The man can kill on the violin.

I thought "House Carpenter" was a symbol, or embodiment of death or something similar, and this song is a variation from the original ballad adapted by HURT, talking about a lost loved one being "married" and "buried" to/with a house carpenter, being dead. OR it could be just lost to him, not dead. I don't know. I think it should be left for individual people to interpret it the way it means to them

There's been a lot of discussion about the meaning of this song - Jesus being a carpenter, marrying people of other religions, etc. Google the traditional lyrics to "House Carpenter" (many versions) and you'll see that the wife of the carpenter ran off with the guy on the ship who loved her. The ship sank killing her and her lover. I think this is an alternative story-line. Here she stays with her house carpenter, and many years later the lover is thinking about his lost love. IMO.
