I admire and respect his service for Hong Kong. but why on earth would you want a British, or in any case a foreigner representing a foreign power, to "govern" HK?
You must be out of your mind. study some history and please have a sense of pride Wouldn't it be best if only the whole world become colonized. Please...
@ricwyk put into context with what was happening around that time, a british Hong Kong was much more favorable to hong kong citizens than a PRC HK. Memories of the disasters under Mao, the Tiananmen massacre were very strong, and there was widespread fear among Hong Kongers as the years leading up to the handover approached. That is why the 80s and early 90s, saw a large exodus of HKers to countries like canada and australia.
@geoffybellofiore Us brits will unlikely to go back to Hong Kong cos our government prefer to make friends with China not to make enemies so we had best leaved HK alone.
I am afraid China will not let HK go cos China put law to safeguard their sovereignty over HK - they had said HK belongs to China for many years before the Brits stolen it so they say. If HK wants the Brits to return or gain independence then the PLA would be sent and revoke marital law thus suspend basic law
BRITISH patten = representative of the creatures that SHOVED opium of down the throats of the Chinese people.
I wonder how americans and british would feel if they fought a war and lost and the victor forced them to purchase and use heroin and cocaine.
