  • His sax just lost its virginity[:

  • @AlexDiPeppe and i have never seen anyone impregnate an inanimate object solely with blowing and fingering!

  • I have never heard a saxophone cry from sheer joy before. Now I have

  • white

  • we tried to play this song when I was in high school and got about through the first 32 measures, it's so hard.

  • eric did it again

  • eric is the best funk/smooth player, chris potter the best in every other way

  • It doesn't matter who's the bestestest saxophone player out there. What matters is that Eric absolutely rocks the HELL out of this song.

  • Wow.

  • people, there is no BEST saxophone player....but there are geniuses that just are in a different league...some of those players are coltrane, brecker, Marienthal. Sandborn is among one of the best, He beats many at his style, like Marienthal, but Marienthal beats him when it comes to improvisation and countless jazz licks. I'm not taking sides, i'm just stating that everyone's better than soemone at something, while someone beats them at something too.

  • eric is ridiculous he absolutely rapes his saxophone

  • ...and Wayne just NAILS the lead pad! That guy is INSANE!!!

  • 4.30 made me smile

  • I love his horn. ;) My director has that kind.

This puts all my practice sessions to shame. :P

  • Eric Marienthal has to be the best sax player alive. I have yet to hear anyone improv better than him or play a chart better than him as far as feel in his playing. This video is just awesome!

  • how does this not have more then 26,000 views?

  • Oh and btw..eric marienthal could own david sanborn ANY DAY

  • ok everyone..you can all argue all you want over who is better but here is the truth. JOHN COLTRANE WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST SAXOPHONE PLAYER EVER TO LIVE!

  • @mayanmonster John Coltrane was a genius for his Improv and Composition. Eric has the Improv, but I personally don't know of his compositions. But he makes up for it with his sheer technical ability. Not to mention the fact that he can keep a crowd going for a whole 6-7 minutes.

  • Oh, and he can play higher than some flutes. Lol

  • @007grog3 plus coltrane was constantly breaking boundaries and changing music, marienthal does nothing new

  • I think what sets Eric apart from so many musicians is that when you hear and see him play, there's no doubt that he is controlling the instrument. So many young musicians, especially students such as myself, feel like they're limited by the horn. "I can't play that, if I do, I'll squeak or frack" blah blah blah, excuses excuses. No matter what I struggle with playing on my horn, I can tell that Eric doesn't because he's the one playing the instrument, it isn't playing him.

  • Yeah! Don't hate on David Sanborn and Charlie Parker those two are legends

  • Guys, please don't compare two great players together. They play two totally different styles of music, no need to compare them to each other.

  • This makes me want to cry from pure intimidation

  • Dude, Charlie Parker IS an insult. He sounds just like David Sanborn to me

  • @LHSax27 And DON'T even compare him to David Sanborn. David has nothing on Eric. Eric is many times over, a much better player than David.

  • @slipknotpwnz666 Dude, are you kidding me? David Sanborn is a god of the Altissimo. His range is absolutely endless. and his tone, god. I respect your opinion, but in mine, David is much better.

  • he has amazing tone quality

  • Easily the charlie parker of today. I was at their witchita concert and they played that there and he instantly became my hero. Also i was in the trivia game it was amazing being so close to so many amazing musicians not to mention being inches from goordon himself

  • @billman2121

definitely not the parker of today, that would be an insult, this guy has much better sound, and doesn't sound like crap

  • I agree with you. Charlie Parker is good, but I just hate the way he sounds

  • I do have to say, though. Donna Lee is one of the funnest tunes I have EVER played, haha

  • yes. just yes

  • Such a good song.

Anyone know what key its in?

  • @b141berry I know it's in B at some points, modulates a few times though

  • @b141berry

it's the key of buy the music, you should be able to preview it online

  • Eric's awesome!

  • Man, Eric Marienthal has to be my favourite alto player out there :)

And not to discredit him, but I prefer Bernie Dresel to whomever that is drumming for this session. Just because his hair and glasses are cool :) that, and I prefer his style but, yeah. XD

  • that's some serious brecker styling

  • dear lord

  • What a monster!

  • how does he do that trill on his sax what notes?

  • Comment removed

  • those trills at 4:50 to about 4:53, 4:55 ish, he's playing an A while trilling on the lower stack. Its called a lower stack trill when you you play something like an A and press down right hand keys. you can also pay a B and use the top side key as a trill.

  • my guess would be maybe a B fingered with a trill on the top side key, a classic cannonball/king curtis trick. I could be wrong though

  • i can say nothing...this is just amazing,the whole band...grats!!!

  • Eric Marienthal is incredible. He played at our Jazz Fest last year at the University of Minnesota Morris and he was incredible. I can't wait to see him again.

  • Comment removed

  • nd pra falar...

    (Mais eu ja falei mesmo!)

  • to bad they came to Penns Grove first and our director set this all up.

  • Man Eric Marienthal Is FANTASTIC!! He's my Sax Idol!! The Only person to be better than this guy is charlie parker!! But I think we ALL Know that =]

  • BrannenSaxGuy - don't compare Marienthal to Parker as they represent different styles.Eric is more into smooth jazz. And if we talk about their lifes apart from music thare's a big difference... You can easily google that Parker was a junky and beat his wife.

  • I know that, trust me, I'm just as big a fan of Eric as I am Parker. I'm just saying Parker was more intelligent in the way he played, PERSONALLY. But, we're not talking about their social lifes are we? I was talking about their playing ability =p

  • intelligent in the way he played? no way...back then they were playing by what they heard and such, guys like eric marienthal study for years and years of playing and developing their understanding of the art. charlie parker did not. so you are actually prettin incorrect about that statement.

  • Comment removed

  • Um, I think I'm actually pretty correct about that statement thank you very much. Not putting down Marienthal, I love the guy the death, but Charlie Parker was a musical genius. And not all of them listen by ear, Charlie Parker practiced roughly 12 to 13 hours a day, playing scales and learning lics that he came up with himself, I'd say he's pretty intelligent =)

  • no dude you're wrong. lol kidding me charlie parker just played fast runs for the most part. very little melody involved. eric is much superior to his skills, technique and overall musicianship. you don't think eric did the exact same practicing? just you can't compare the 2. 2 different era's of jazz and 2 different styles. and yes they ALL listened by ear. how do you think jazz originated...brush up on your jazz culture history

  • oh and most of the time....parker went to his gigs on something. he died at age like....25-30 i think of heroine overdose. but marienthal practiced like that too. like synyster said, you cant compare 2 different eras of jazz. they're just too different

  • 4:41....YEAH!

  • I watched them last night!! It was so awsome! eric is amazing....

  • i wonder what alto eric plays its kind of hard to tell from this vid

  • Eric plays a Mark VI alto with a Beechler Bellite #7 mpc, an Olegature ligature and Vandorean Traditional #2.5 reed.

  • explain?

  • Jazz will never die

  • what?

  • Eric is inhumanly good.

  • I am actually performing this exact arrangement for jazz fest in new orleans.

  • holy ****

    This is amazing...

  • Eric isn´t from the Earth.:D It´s amazing solo. I like it!!!!

  • i got to play with eric once. he has the pop sax sound but he has amazing chops to go with it, he is truly talented, even if he did work at disney land.

  • the solo has v. similar licks to "Samba del Gringo"

    Was probably Eric too.

Don't know if anyone else noticed that.

  • No, the solo in the original was Brandon Fields

  • Sorry, i was talking about samba del gringo

the solo on the original phat band take of play that funky music was David Sanborn

  • this isnt Trevor, f.y.i. he has a youtube account, but this guy isnt him

  • WOW!!! This guy is insanely amazing!!! Our jazz instructor wants me to play this, but i'm thinking not. I can't even get close to this guys level. Very nice

  • look up el dorado high school play this song its the one thats 4:52 long

  • I heard them to day. they came to my school...I'm from Japan! it was amazing!!!

  • hes a beast! a monster! a god! he owned me when i had a lesson with him. oh, god he owned me like no other, but hes just great

  • thats what she said...

  • but u have to admit u walked right into that one

  • just "grow" up, nice try Pi.

  • who are you and how do you know my name?

  • he's fucking insane.

    best ever.

  • FREAKING MARIENTHAL!!!!!!!!!!!! DUDE i enjoyed the most HIS freaking timing man it builds and builds! Theres nothing like seeing him live though

  • Hahaha. Wayne is the real star of this song. That's just silly.

  • @KrummyBear: nice, you suck

    Wayne is incredible, Eric, too

  • haha. I was saying he was silly good ya goon.

  • He makes that saxophone his BITCH.

  • I love that thing he did at 3:08

  • I have a little over two-and-a-half octaves on a good day... I think he just kill that sax with three-and-a-half... I have always thought that those kind of altissimo are "humanly impossible" ... until one day I saw him live and playing this tune right in front of me.

    ERIC MARIENTHAL OWNS!

  • 4:55 look at the veins in his neck. WOW

  • Eric is a freakin monster. What an amzing player.

  • Our Jazz Band is going to play this later on in the year. I don't know if we can get it that good, but damn, it's a pretty awesome chart.

  • OMG! OMG! Speechless. WTF just happened! It actually send shivers down my spine.

His altissimo is UNBELIEVABLE! and the multiphonics! Just everything about that man's sax playing, WOW!

  • OMG, THIS WHOLE THING IS AMAZING!!! the sax, wayne and his killin self!!! everything so damn FUKNKY!!! i love this

  • Makes me want to learn multiphonics.

    Eric is a machine

  • his high notes are unbelievable

  • He is just such an incredible musician. It's hard to believe that someone can do that, especially that well!

  • my jazz band playe this last year man it was hard key signature is 5 sharps its a profesional chart
