that's a good idea, i hadn't thought of that one. we used one or two heavier gauge springs we found at a surplus store. we had another one or two we tried to add, but by then it just got downright dangerous!
we arent allowed to have those big catapults for are project because one year when some kid shot it off it whipped up and hit em in the face and he was sent to the hospital :(
it was a while ago, i'm trying to remember...i want to say around 35 yards, or about 100 feet. but that was using just one of the 4 heavy duty springs. when we hooked up more than the one, we began to fear for our fingers while loading!
it was for a school project, so largely things laying around. some new 2x4 though. i'd estimate the total to be under $20. go to axman, or any type of surplus store!

What was your power source and latch system? we tried surgical tubing and it didn't shoot nearly as far

I just made a catapult the same size and it launches a tennis ball about 10 feet:(!
