Since Mercury has no atmosphere, there temperture during a Mercurian day is tremendously scorching, while during the night, on the other side of the planet, it is exceptionally artic. So while one side of the planet is burning in tremendous heat, the other side is experiencing awful below zero temperature. Mercury cannot sustain life because of these extreme temperature changes, so while other scientists in the 1800s raise the question if there could be life on Mercury, we realize we were wrong.
I remember watching "Patrick Stewart Narrates The Planets" over and over years ago. This video is apparently from that video, and that probe at the end always looked like a pile of junk to me.
