This was the shit back in the day! Saw FLA & SP in concert a few times! They are not the founders of industrial but they sure as hell made it better! Years ahead of there time.
As an industrial artist myself I say that Puppy and Gristle are some of the most influential bands to ME (as well as a few others but Puppy and Gristle are legends) when I was first getting into industrial and trying to make some music I was taking keyboard lessons, I later found out that my teacher played with Throbbing Gristle :D
I was never a big fan of FLA but I like their attitude in this interview. Humble and laid back. Leeb perhaps isnt as sharp a lyricist or singer as some but being unpretentious and having fun is fine by me.
Holy shit that first FLA track they play here is just awesome. Clinical as fuck. The birth of harsh, sterile dance music.
As for the greatest industrial band, I couldn't honestly say, but I always thought that if you got the ultimate Pigface line up and replaced Martin Atkins with a Casio drum machine, you'd definitely be on to something.
If your going to say the whole industrial scene is owed to a band or two, I would say it is more Throbbing Gristle than anything else. They were more influential, and pretty much coined the term "Industrial"
@nerdlife I don't really look at it from a "scene" perspective at all. I don't feel I owe anything to throbbing gristle because I never liked them & so I wasn't influenced by them musically. SP on the other hand was highly influential to me. I don't like genres...only specific artists.
FLA AND SP ARE THE FATHERS OF INDUSTRIAL MUSIC.THEY ARE BOTH GREAT AND THEY STILL STAND UP TODAY AS THE FATHERS........unless you want to go to sisters.....or even the cure.souzie.......gennesis p orridge....throbbing grissle?
Cabaret Voltaire were the originators of this kind of wierd layered Industrial music. Skinny Puppy took it in one direction, and FLA took it in another. Even the vocals are similar... Listen to Ogre/Bill's early vocals and listen to Cabaret Voltaire's Red Mecca... You can hear the influence... It's all very interesting when you delve deep and look further and further back into the genre... You can see who influenced who...
well people all ways say that new music is shit but they are wrong. you need to see what music has to offer that is why skinnypuppy is where the are to day by taking a chance in the music of the the world ect.
Well I always say that! But I guess it depends what you mean by modern music etc. I think/hope music will take another interesting twist before too long.
whats the song at 2:10 ?

"There's a definite trend for distorted vocals in industrial music...at times it's overused"
Eerily prophetic Mr. Leeb! This was what, ten, fifteen years before "aggrotech" was invented?

And then we can also say early Puppy was heavily influenced by Portion Control, But I'd just be pissing in the wind I'm sure.

Leeb owes to CV just as much as
every hipster rock band owes
to joy divison.. notice how everything
gets linked back to old factory records
artists?

yeah it is true, and all the "experimental music" purists would deny the influence of CV's vox because Skinny Puppy is so unwashed to them :P
