great video...thanks for all your effort and sharing your knowledge. Great, lightweight bloodstopper would be a pack of quick clot and an Israeli bandage (check out the Israeli bandage..they are very versatile and work great!)...keep up the great work...we all appreciate it.
About those stormproof matches, back when I was a Boy Scout, me and my buddy did a test. We lit one and stuck it in a bucket of water. We pulled it our a second later, and it re-lit. They will not go out until the orange is gone
My fire starter when I can't just light tinder, is a single cotton ball fluffed up and a few drops of hand sanitizer. when I tried it out burned for like 30 seconds which is pretty good but not sure how it will do if theres wind. Also I carry hand sanitizer because when I have a snack or meal I don't my hands dirty from god knows what.
The ability to stitch stuff up is a must i think to, because rips in clothing can easily occur no matter the material, plus if you lack a med kit with the ability, a normal needle and thread can work almost as well.
@thedude00121 For this very reason strike anywhere matches (such as he has in the waterproof container) have been banded in several states. I keep strike anywhere in a tin just in case. Also the REI waterproof matches can be purchased under other brands with the striker on the outside of the plastic container they come in.
New to backpacking, obv on 5/8 of the video series.. I got a firesteel & trioxane from an army surplus store for dirt cheap, they're GREAT! Thanks for posting all this, great material!
Hey buddy, Great series! Just a small correction regarding one of your fire starting tool. (The light weight one you showed with the small flint rod attached to the aluminum rod with the hack saw blade.) That is not an aluminum rod... It is a magnesium rod! Take your knife or a file and scrape off a small pile of magnesium shavings to use as tinder. It will catch with the sparks from the flint strip and burn very hot. Rock On Dude! Again, this is an excellent series!
hey, you said not to rely on just lighters for fire. what about the butane storm proof lighters? i think they would work. you should do a review video on one and test it if you soak it in water to see if it still works!
when you talked about those storm proof matches blowing up instead of putting cotton over them why not put them in unside down or does that pose a problem that in not aware of like friction fire(static electricity ignighting them.) btw i love your vids just saw glacier call one of your best cant wait for part 2.
A great little tip for Emergency fire starting, in your emergency med kit you should have alcohol prep pads or alcohol based hand/wound sanitizer will both light up quick and burn real hot, not the longest burning option but for an emergency its great. and if you have no other options its somethin to consider
Hey Nutnfancy, not sure how often you check these comments. But I wanted to let you know. That flint you picked up at sportsmans with the "Aluminum" attached is actually Magnesium. I carry the same item in my kit. It can be shaved off in tiny little bits, I usually use a knife. Once you've got a good pile of it collected, you can throw a spark into the pile from the flint. The stuff burns like crazy, and helps to ignite tinder. Keep up the good work man.
Hahaha! Like we wouldn't watch. Love the tap dancing vid, too. I can still do the Mexican Hat Dance that I learned in first grade dance lessons. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
Dried catails can be used as tinder if you have a magnifying glass. And if you open up the cattails, they are also GREAT for catching that initial spark from a flint striker.
The lint buildup in your dryer is also great for catching flint sparks.
For matches I use a spent 20 gauge shotgun shell, then i cover it with a spent 12 gauge shell. it stays dry and its pretty lightweight. Just a tip i saw in field and stream and I like the way it works.
Just a word on the Flare pen, You can get an "Orion Pocket Rocket" between 20 and 30 bucks, one pen 3 flares in a water proof container, I know academy Sports Carries them, and you can find them on line
Great videos nutnfancy. Just a note: The striker that had the saw blade, You said it had a aluminium rod? Are you certain its not magnesium. I have one similar and it's a block of magnesium that you shave into a pile and burns white hot even wet!
Hey nutnfancy just a side note talking about signaling, great systems for one and two is for signaling at night you can use the muzzle flash from your gun if you have one on your person to signal like the flares but not as effective but a last ditch option it works!
Hey nutn have you ever heard of ultimate survival technology wet fire tinder. It is one of the best tinders and is wind proof, lights better when wet and you canlight it on water amazing!
in canada what you call a flare pin you can get at basickly any sporting goods stores. alot of the ones ive seen come whith flares and bear bangers. the one you have looks like one of the ones that uses a .22 blank to propel the flare...if yours is like that in a sirvival situation you could take one that the flare has alredy been shot out of, pry out the casing of the blank and inset a .22 lr bingo! survival gun
Hey nutn fancy heres something you should try get an egg carten made of preferably cardboard get some lint from your clothes dryer and get some wax put the lint in the carten and pour wax on it let it dry and there ya go you have a material that burns really well and for long periods of time i made 1 the size of a quarter and it burned for12 minutes 15 seconds exactly :)
there is lots of air traffic in alaska im tellin ya,theres super cubs and beavers every were my dad hunts the way you mentioned as a guide he just takes a satellite phone
i am 14 and just got my 1st light my fire firesteel im in aus and i dident think i could get them but i went to my local bcf store (boating camping fishing) and found them and i got 1 i am veryy happy with the result if all use aus people are wondering
1. needle & thread - a must have I agree - exact same thing happened to me with one of my packs, and a needle and fishing line saved my ass.
2. Multi-tool - Is say a must have - pliers once saved my ass - camping in Japan, and discovered a very large, angry and dangerous centipede in my tent - my leatherman tool w/ pliers was the best and really only way I had to get the thing out of the tent. Just never can guess when and what youll use a leatherman for.
with the sweedish firesteel, i found the striker that comes with it often dosent quite give enough friction to produce a good spark, so i use the back edge of an old sailing knife. anyone else found the same? or am i just a pyromaniac?
in fact, its probably some stor of DURALUMINIUM, an alluminium-copper alloy, featuring magnesium - but less than 1%. So no firemaking there. This stuff is about as light as aluminium, but five or more times stronger. "aluminium" engine blocks, pistons, and aircraft parts are in fact made of aluminium alloys, not aluminium.
a little thing there dont waigh mutch you can add to your signalling kit is a Sailor (Sea survival) Smoke signal thouse things can be seen by a Heli or plaine on LONG!! distance we tryed one in Norway in the Mountain and thy do work so Just a little sugjesting from me Great video man as Always
The handle on that second flint and steel that you showed might not be aluminum. I have something similar and the handle is magnesium, so you can shave some off and spark it with the flint.
A tip with the Match bottle. If you store them with the material towards the striker (like you had them when you dropped them, and they exploded) pack a cotton ball between the match and the striker. They won't go off. Happened to me (sorta). Cotton balls are great, and are a back up tinder, too.
I always carry a Bic lighter, that chinese one will break or fail very easily and wont last as long.
Another would be maybe look into a combat lifesaver bag, not the backpack but the shoulder bag. They have a saline IV, splint, quickclot, and alot of other handy stuff. They might be just slightly larger and heavier than that blackhawk one, but who cares if someone else is carrying it right.
Dude! You pack heavy! But you enjoy what you do. And that's the important thing!! I'm glad to see some enjoys Backpacking as much as I do. Ilook forward to more Video's. I learned some stuff!
Cold Steel Recon Scout. You will not get a better blade for backpacking/hiking trips. Works great as a woodsplitter and does everything you might ask of a bigger (7.5") survival blade. Check out Nutnfancy's tabletop review of the knife. He will stand by my statements.
You should consider adding potassium pomengrante and glycerine. potassium pomengrante is an antiseptic and glycerine is anti diarhea. 2 very light weight capsules, which when added together creat an exothermic reaction which is a very intense flame. great fire starter and have first aid capabilities, multi use materials are always welcome in my backpack
It would be nice to see your first aid kit and what is in it. I carry a first aid kit in my car for those "just in case" emergencies. It would be nice to see another reference point and possibly another philosophical view.
as always, great videos. I'm really digging this backpacking gear series. one question: were those white-tip matches strike-anywhere? if so, where do you find them? thanks again. great vids
I don't know about where you live, but in Canada, REDBIRD Kitchen style matches, 2 packs of 250 ish matches, available at Canadian Tire, or Walmart sort of thing
ya. white tip are light anywhere. i dont know where u live but i can get them like everywhere. coast mountain, mountain equipment co-op, three vets, anywhere like that and some stores like wall mart
If live in the wonderful nanny state of California, strike anywhere matches are illegal. Because we all know those are the matches only used by arsonists and criminals..... Right?
thats such a dumb rule. why cant u have them. o no if im going to burn down a building i wont have like 10 types of fire on me at all times. and anyways, their used for camping too. who wants to bring a stricker when u can bring nothing
Welcome to California, this is what happens when liberals get to make the rules. Dont even get me started on the gun laws here. I cant wait to get out!!
Yeah here in Mass, the birthplace of the revolution, we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country today. At the sametime we're building more low income housing and begging for more illegals and the crime that comes with them.
Amen. After college Im getting out of this state and moving to some place where they dont tax the air you breath and restrict your ability to defend yourself.
I always like to bring backups when were talking about things that could save our live if one goes bad. Like water treatment, fire starting, etc. Great info Nutnfancy. Jet over and out
Great video and nice warning about the matches, may be including the phrase "Like a grenade" instead of just "dangerous and could start a fire if dropped" could cause some less responsible types to expirement. I would not do something like that i am a pyro who does not take risks.
Great stuff, for the lighter, you should consider Bic disposables, I'm a heavy smoker and go through a lot of lighters, I often forget them in my pants when they get washed, and the BICS are the only ones that function very well right after.
Hey, great vid! I Don't know if you know it or not but that flint and steel from Sportsman's Warehouse is actually flint on a magnesium rod...scrape some off the back and light it up.
Man Dude! Awesome series! Call me impressionable, but I'll be danged if ya aint got me diggin' out my backpackin' gear to check my inventory. Used to go up to the beautiful Trinity Alps wilderness on a weekly basis. Thanks for re-kindling the flame!!

Not only the gun laws, Cali has some of the weirdest blade laws I have ever seen as well. (NY State is bad to on the blade laws)

i feel ya bud, and i thought Massacusetts was restrictive
schnips074 2 years ago
Yeah here in Mass, the birthplace of the revolution, we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country today. At the sametime we're building more low income housing and begging for more illegals and the crime that comes with them.

Amen. After college Im getting out of this state and moving to some place where they dont tax the air you breath and restrict your ability to defend yourself.

I always like to bring backups when were talking about things that could save our live if one goes bad. Like water treatment, fire starting, etc. Great info Nutnfancy. Jet over and out

That "aluminium rod" with the flint... Are you sure that isnt a magnesium block that you scrape to aid firelighting?

Guys lighting their farts, LMAO.

Great video and nice warning about the matches, may be including the phrase "Like a grenade" instead of just "dangerous and could start a fire if dropped" could cause some less responsible types to expirement. I would not do something like that i am a pyro who does not take risks.

Yeah I should have said that instead...oops. However it remains an accurate description. Thanks. :0

also a pack of cigarettes is good to have with, the tobacco will stop the bleeding for a while, if its a bad cut untill we go and stich it up

How do you feel about custom made camping knives?

You can always just store the matches striking end down.

Good point.

Great stuff, for the lighter, you should consider Bic disposables, I'm a heavy smoker and go through a lot of lighters, I often forget them in my pants when they get washed, and the BICS are the only ones that function very well right after.

Hey, great vid! I Don't know if you know it or not but that flint and steel from Sportsman's Warehouse is actually flint on a magnesium rod...scrape some off the back and light it up.

you know HOW corny it sounds when you say "stuff that can save your life". smimplicity and truethfulness to me: great stuff

I think I speak for everyone here when I say: What the hell are you talking about?
John031989 3 years ago
It is very bold to say "stuff that can save your live". Right?
But saying something like this (very simple statement) and being absolutely spot-on is just great. Simplicity and Truethfulness rocks. In my book.

Sorry if what I said was not clear!
