  • Higoana sensei is so dedicated! I bet he could punch a hole in a wall :-)

  • Master Higaonna is such an inspiration to me. He makes me want to strive for perfection of Mind, Body, and spirit. Perfection doesn't exist but it can inspire us to strive and reach new and advanced heights of achievement. lol I don't know.

    Karate for live! (o_-)

  • I saw a guy at a bar get knocked out cold by a drunken loser: The MMA guy proceeded to remove his shirt and tease the other guy, the drunk guy swung, the MMA guy grappled him, then without warning, the drunk guy clocked the guy in the jaw knocking him unconscious. (BTW MMA guy was ripped, drunk black guy had a beer gut).

No martial art makes you invincible, any idiot can still fuck you up.

  • @Riggro what did him being black have to do with anything???

  • Some folks take it as a sport, others take it as a way of life, I prefer the spiritual enlightenment that comes with martial arts and also follow it as a teaching for life and many ways to live it. It helps expand the mind and helps those understand their body, this in turn makes us one with ourselves and others who believe similar. I personally believe even with the hate, martial arts above all else can help unite our people globally whether it's sport or much more than that.

  • @Datleco There's a HUGE difference between sport karate and traditional karate. People still don't seem to understand that and when they hear karate, they're expecting a ton of flying butterfly kicks and back flips, like the stuff you see on ESPN. That's so far traditional karate it might as well be a different style all together.

  • nice opinions of all of you. finally sum people who do understand the real way of karate and dont expect action action action hiaaaayh! :D. this reminds me of the movie kuro obi.

  • I wish I could be this devoted to the martial arts. It's not easy, in fact, I don't know how this guy's body can take practicing every morning and every evening. What's the secret?

  • "sense eye" :-D

  • the mma guys who say oh thiss mma guy could beat this karate guy and so on clearly dont understand that karate doesnt have rules like mma sport does, as the top comment says karate is not a sport, and any mma guy who thinks they can just walk in and walk all over a well trained karateka are clearly mistaken, they clearly have no idea how bad a KINE GERI would ruin there day

  • @sw33n3ybill Yeah, because kine geri is such a revolutionary technique that no-one knows... Look, you have to look at it's objectively. Trained well (so including full contact continious kumité) karate is a good striking art. I would give the advantage in striking to the karate guy but that's only one range. Karate doesn't involve any grappling, or certainly not to the level as seen in grappling arts. The MMA guy knows grappling and knows striking, so the advantage clearly is to him.

  • @BAGUIOSbadboy01 It can be, it depends how you approach it, Martial Arts has to grow with the times (in terms of encompasing new attacks such as gun disarming techniques) but so long as the human body is hurt by the same things, then what hurt 500 years ago is still going to hurt today. If something broke an arm and a neck then, it'll do the same today. Simply because we as Martial Artists need to grow with the times doesn't mean we should discard the foundation upon which it's built

  • Higaonna Sensei!!!!! :DDDDD Oss!!!!!!!!

  • i wish the REAL karate was in the u.s where i am.

all we got here is mcdojoz

  • @ragnarlava only cus u dont kno what its all about i would love to see u try it

  • @ragnarlava What do you recommend then??

  • @ragnarlava you are a pussy. i bet you've never even studied karate. why are you even watching this then? grow up.

  • Karate-Do in mainland Japan have much deviated from its original purpose.

Old school karate-do is not only Full-Contact but are practiced with devotion and

extreme care to avoid killing each other. Kyokushin is just an off-shoot of the older Okinawan systems and Korean Taekkyon.

  • @iamdiaperman racist

  • martial arts are deadly, if you learned real martial arts from back in the day, you could kill someone. now its all business. to a real master its not about fighting, its about harmony in mind body and spirit. its about self defense and honor. everyonne thinks its all about the fight. too much tv these days. Respect and honor is key.

  • @ferisbcamfrye1 Hi, I found that your say are truhtfully :-)

The sportive Karate is very for reflex, timing and health but for someone who want only to train, the way of traditionnal martial arts is the path to follow.

  • It is very humbling to see Higaonna sensei running on the same streets and practicing in the same dojo so many years ago. The streets might be more urbanized today and his dojo floor might be more patchy, but his spirit and smile are still the same.

    OSU!

  • Higaonna Sensei!!!

  • that master is pretty fat for someone who practices karate like that crazy... but eh he must kick some serious ass

  • i learn karate because i want to learn hadouken!!!!

  • lame ....

  • @qlateman SONIC BOOM!!!

  • @qlateman oh you can learn karate.... Shoryuuuuuken !!!

  • goju ryu is best

  • you learn goju-ryu too ?

  • you even listened to the documentary?

    Karate is 500 years old

  • shotokan sempre

  • i dont want to correct u but thats not true.

jujutsu is japanese while karate is okinawan in origin.

    completely different heritige

  • Karate is more than hundred years old. And it does not come from ju jutsu, but from kung fu. Kung fu was trained by old munks in monastery in india, and then it came to china, where it later came to Okinawa and was develop to karate. Karate is in other words, an "update" of old kung fu.

  • sure, sure ...........:-/

  • The name "Karate" is young, around from 1917.... the art took form after de Satsuma Samurai invation in 1609, but 500 year ago the mixture of Jujutsu and chinese Chuan fa is KARATE

  • ok man, no problem...after all, the different styles of karate are like paths to the same mountain. And maybe you are right, sport karate is more athletic than traditional ones, for me is only a matter of approach...lol

  • Karate is no longer practiced like this anymore. We actually have more evolved faster more efficient styles. But it's nice to know where our origins come from.

  • mmmm i dont think so....okinawan karate i still practiced THIS way....and i dont know what styles you think are more "faster and eficient"..if you are talking about japanese styles of karate like shotokan, i have to disagree...for my these styles are more sport and "point match" oriented, but not more eficient...just my opinion

  • I'm sorry your right about that. Okinawan karate IS still practiced that way!...lol. But In my opinion I think sport has made it more popular and exercises a lot more athletic than it used to be. Though, ideals have change to "one hit one kill" to "competition". Historically we as Karate-ka still are taught its origins. I'm sorry if I came across pompous, They're all good! Karate rocks. Okinawan, Japanese, WKF competition, I'm glad I'm a part of it!. and yes I am shotokan. lol

  • dude, wtf you on? all styles of karate is japanese. but yeah, now days martial arts are trained differently than traditional ones. in some countrys they even banned more karate moves because it is thought to be too "deadly"

  • ok, okinawa is now also a part of japan, but is culturaly different and the origin of karate is in that islands, not in the main island of japan. if you dont know about what you are talking about, please read before you comment.

and is true that martial arts are trained differently than in old days, but they are still schools that train in the way the video show, like uechi ryu, the style i practice

  • yeah, but if you look at martial arts like ninjutsu which was made in fuedal japan for shinobis and kunoichis, they are completely trained differently now. at the time, japan made ninjutsu for kill and stealth, now days they dont train you the traditional ninjutsu

same as most, karate, jujutsu etc etc.

  • Yeah, obviously times have changed. Were no longer trying to carry around swords for our protection, at least in any historical or modern culture. That would be pretty sweet though if we could, I would look like a nerd, but who would cares? If they said something, they would see my sword and be like DAMN! But then I could get shot....lol.

  • I agree, guns need to be out and swords need to come back lolol

  • Actaully it oringinated in Okinawa, I did a Historical essay on that in my College research, I even visted some of the sites in Japan and Okinawa. The Okinawans's Oringinally had Shuri-te and the Japanese converted to thier style Kara-te. For military reasons of course. I don't know about banning moves, to me, keeping track of that would be quite ridiculous.

  • Shotokan is from Okinawa -.- .

  • kyokushin?

  • @yckss17 goju ryu

  • Dude you are crazy. I practice shotokan karate by the guy who first brought karate in the U.S. who was taught by the guy who first brought karate to Japan. The father of Shotokan(most traditional karate you can get)

  • there is a problem with that thinking, if karate doesn't work, then it would not be around, because the people who developed it would have been killed early on, but karate was passed down because it was effective. there is really(in my oppinion) no such thing as traditional karate, because everyone developes their own methods of fighting during their training. karate is very powerful, direct, and gets straight to the point of fighting, which is survival.

  • Shotokan is hardly the most traditional, considering it's actually a fairly modern form, based off of older Matsumura Shorin-ryu.

  • I am also a student of Shotokan and have been training for 11 years. Recently, I started training in Goju Ryu and found out that Shotokan is definetly not the most traditional karate, even though it is my favorite. Shotokan is the most traditional in Japan, but to get to the true roots you have to explore the Naha-Te styles that originated in Okinawa. Remember that it was Okinawa that had to develop 'empty hand' bc of the Satsuma Invasion. The Japanese adopted the styles and created their own.

  • The Karate master Machida is undefeated, last I recall, in the UFC. BJJ is great, don't get me wrong, but it's not the giant killer it once was now that everyone crosstrains at least takedown/grappling defense. I do think BJJ does have a bright future ahead though, despite this.

  • why did u bother to watch this if you think its shit ?

  • Funakoshi is the father of Japanese Karate. Okinawan Karate existed long prior to Funakoshi. I'm not claiming one's better than another, just some history. The heritage of Karate, being Kung Fu, can be seen in the forms and in certain Karate styles, like Uechi Ryu, which still contain pure animal forms.

At any rate, Shotokan continues to develop, it didn't just stop post-Funakoshi.

  • I love Karate, I couldn't get through life without.

  • AT 0.26.....the way of the ??

    anybody know pls tell me

  • WARRIOR

  • lol go watch k-1

  • look at the video : Pimp vs Karate

  • great example, Billy0110!

  • ur joking right, anyone who has the dedication to martial arts can take on any part of his fears, even if its attempting what u just said, beating a hard black man from the streets

  • Goju Ryu rocks!

  • I like everything japanese.

  • the women lol

  • hey wat about killing ur self or harakiri? dats japanese

  • oh you are phillipino ,, chances are you are gay i know 5 phillipinos and 2 of them are gay. So what cars do the phillipinos make ,,ha ha

  • According to your numbers, chances are more likely he is not gay. 2 out of 5 would mean he has a 60% chance of not being gay and 40% of being.

  • hahaha, nice one.

  • thank you for this video!

  • dam he can do thum push up

  • The reason the King of Okinawa disarmed his population, is because the civil war they experienced resulted in the death of a near 70% of their population. The war was so catastrophic, the king reportedly said "am I the ruler of a kingdom, or a cemetery?" Or was it graveyard? To any youtubers who run into my comments, please check what I said at your local library (preferably university).

  • Great documentary, bbc does it better. I like that the sensei runs barefoot. It's actually better for your foot and calf strength. Awesome video.

  • no joke though; after the civil war, it took the living nearly 20 years to bury all the dead.

  • Any documentary by the BBC or in england is the best you can get they research almost everything and present it better.

  • I don't care if karate is not better than mma I enjoy watching mma just like anyone else but I'm still into my oldskool stuff. Sametime there are alot of things in MMA that aren't allowed that are in a proper fight.

  • yeah you'll have a broken jaw

  • you are forgeting the basic principles of Karate ... 1 Karate is for defense only 2 you must love and protect all forms of life 3 you must have RESPECT for all people etc. you must not accept or participate in violence of any kind ... if you indeed practice karate you should adopt the spiritual and mental status of a karate partitioner [ excuse me for my english please] *bow*

  • err guys I think we're missing the point of martial arts, lets drop the "chuck lidell could knock any karate guy out" etc

  • my sensi is green and sticky icky....gets me high every nite..

  • lol

  • UFC is a sport, its main purpose is to entertain and make money. Would you fight Higaonna Sensei? I doubt it.

  • ufc is real, like the other said ENTERTAINMENT they have rules too.karate guys especially okinawan style are trained to fuck up or kill.seen the training with the rock, liddels head would break open u fool!when i hear all this i know who knows what their talking about and who dosent.

  • Karate fighters mostly compete in kickboxing rules fights, and not mma. You can see a lot of karate fighters in K-1. The heavyweight champ Semmy Schilt for example. Some others include Glaube Feitosa, Musashi, Andy Hug, and Francisco Filho. They've knocked out their share of people, but it's only just the sport aspect of karate.

  • yes also,,,,one thing to say,,,there was a guy at the ufc and well after his workout at the gym he was going to his car and two guys tried to rob him,,one came at him with a knife he disarmed it and the knife fell on the floor,,the guy was knocked out,,the other guy got the knife, tried to stab the ufc guy but was put in an arm bar,so he tappped and the ufc guy let him go,,,he got stabbed like seven times,,

  • AND ewerton texeira :3

  • for ur info how many of those ufc guys know more then 10 ways to quickly kill a person,,,a person who trained in the art of karate and is like master or grandmaster would easiley end the life of one of the ufc fighters,,,and the ones that dont compete is because karate is not a sport,,,its a way of life,,and if really the ufc guys wanted to fight the karate guys would win, no doubt.

  • Well said, mate. Karate is N O T a fucking sport. All these little bedroom warriors in their heavy metal T-Shirts that say "Oooh, such and such MMA guy could beat his ass" don't know the first thing about Karate. As you say, it is a lethal combat system, and the 'sport' faction is just a bastardisation of the art.

  • @jobbythehutt for the record, those fags listen to fake wannabe metal

i love MMA and currently train in it but i also train in goju ryu karate and it always depends on the fighter and experience and what the mixed martial artist is fighting in and under the conditions

MMA is a sport which means they dont teach you a lot of what they mix in there

in a cage with rules MMA would prolly win, anywhere else karate has it

  • @jobbythehutt Hardly. Competition is a way of proving your skill on someone who is resisting,vs. a compliant uke. Otherwise, you're just fooling yourself.

  • @patrickhenrysghost Agreed. Kumite must be a part of one's training just like Kata and Makiwara. I do Karate primarily because I like it. My goal is perfection in Kata, I don't worry about it being possible or impossible, I just work toward it with all I have. Kumite in my training is equally important I just like kata more in this phase of my training.

  • @jobbythehutt Well said -away of life , sport karate i think is important part of our training ,but is only 1 tiny aspect, Hard style karate where we train full on , put everything into our training as if each session were our last and also absorb the spiritual side is where true karate-do is at. Like anything you only get out what you put in , practise budo karate and the hikken issatsu principle of the art --this is also where true karate-do is at , Seek perfection of character , Ossu.

  • @jobbythehutt lethal? lol grow up.

  • @MrGrevy Have you ever seen real karate to say this?

  • @jobbythehutt

what does Music have to do with this?

Lethal? Get Real! many Japanese also want it as a sport & treat it as such.

sumo is a sport & its a Japanese Fighting.

  • @Raymasaki there is huge opposition among the Japanese/Okinawan masters from organizing a karate sport. It was cited as one of the reasons karate did not become part of the olympics...

  • @jobbythehutt Hold up ass hole I wear heavy metal shirts all the time and my favorite fighter is lyoto machida and plus IM a believer in Karate =) and ur right shits not meant for the cage but its nice to see it work in the cage and out in the world

  • this guy would fuck up like 90% of them

  • true! lol

  • thanks for the vid

  • my sensi is a 9th dan

    ooo snap!

  • can any one tell me why shoalin styles and kung fu is shit

  • because your ignorant.

  • karate originated from kung fu.. idiot so shut up

  • They forgot to say that okinawan karate comes from white crane or southern style shaolin kung fu from China. It was not made....

  • that is only partially true of certain styles.

  • The series was an 8 part documentary made in 1983 and featured several different arts including Goju RYu. The narrator is Dennis (Minder and The Sweeney fame)Waterman.

  • Awesome!Thanks for posting!

  • interesting

  • Thank you KMBA for posting this footage. Twenty years ago or so I bought the book "The Way of the Warrior" based on this BBC documentary. I still have it. But I never saw the documentary itself. It is brilliant. And Higaonna Sensei of course is unbelievable as always. Can you please post more of this documentary, not only the part dealing with Karate?

  • The book is full of incorrect facts though! ie pictures saying which kata is being shown .... but naming the wrong kata, even naming the wrong people!

  • That was definetely interesting. Too bad that the video timer was running on top of the translations

  • For other parts look at:
