well break a leg!!! i was in "kiss me, kate"this this past november as the stage doorman/ padua priest since we had 26 girls and 9 boys!!! again, break a leg no matter what part you get!!!
Tommy Rall is the one in the pink and has a mustache, the very athletic one with his dancing. . and the wonderful Bob Fosse is the first one who sings. He's the jazzier one out of the three guys =D I can't take my eyes off of him everytime he dances. =D
Look at Anne, she's so tiny and she just drowns in that dress! I applaud her! This has to be my favorite song; it lands just before "I Hate Men," where Miss Grayson owns it. I haven't found another performance that does the movie justice, other than Teressa Byrne.
I normally not a big dance fan, but I like dancing in this one and Seven brides for seven brothers. They all are good dancers, but Tommy Rall (black hair) is my favorite. Yes I think red and white is late Bob Fosse. From what I read everybody in this piece but Tommy Rall are passed away.
Ann Miller & Bob Fosse in the same, incredible dance number. Way too fabulous for words. Thanks for posting this, one of my favorite dances of all time!!
If you read any bio of Cole Porter or history of this show, you'll find out that Tom Dick or Harry WAS his way of being naughty while going over his straight audiences heads back in 1948!
Dr Bell, I was responding to the previous posters who were saying that Cole WASN"T being dirty and that "dick" didn't mean what it means now back in 1948! I was assuming they were unfamiliar with Cole Porter or the history of "Kate" which is why their posts were questioning if that song has a double meaning...
oh my goodness! i'm so glad you put this up. all of a sudden this song popped into my head and i was hoping it would be on youtube. this is definitely my favorite movie ever.
I just love this song and dance sequence. The way Ann Miller's skirt flares out at 2:54 is just magnificient. What an energetic, fun and dramatic musical number including fun early dance footage of Bob Fosse!
There is a later number in the movie with even better chory in it. This was Bob's first commercial choreography. The director agreed to let Bob chory this one particular section, and as you see its superb fosse to the very core. It was from this that he was able to promote himself to the legend he is today.
we were watching this in my dance class and we all laughed when she said "harry dick" and "a dicka dick"; i no the term didn't even exist back then but it is pretty funny
He's everybody's favorite; he's the late, great Bob Fosse. The guy in purple, Bobby Van, was a staple on TV game shows back in the 70s, I remember. He died in 1980. The third guy, Tommy Rall, is still kicking at 78. They and Ann Miller were sheer perfection in this film.
It's part of the chereography as the three dancers are supposed to be three suitors to Bianca (Ann Miller) fighting over to win her heart. If I remember correctly, what you see here (and also what you see on the DVD edition) is not in the original screen format - there, you can see their actions better, as well as all the dancer numbers in the film.
i love the male dancers. they must be very secure in their masculinity to wear those outfits. and i say that in the nicest, best way possible. ann miller is a genius.
Never realized how beautiful Miller's face was, not just her dancing, but the camera seems to capture her personality too. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hey! I get to sing this in my school play this year! Thanks for adding the lyrics because they really are going to help me a lot for my audition. Thank you so much for posting this vidio!
Bob Fosse is freakin' awesome!! I love him in this movie and Ann Miller is brilliant. You certainly had to be someone special if you could dance, act, and sing back then.
Yeah....like that crappy CHICAGO - god....did any dance shot last for more than 3 seconds? Just proves that none of them could really dance or move in synch for more than 3 seconds. Sad....these people had talent and could do long takes. CHeck the Gene Kelly one on here from Summer Stock where he dances with a creaking floor and a newspaper. Starts with a 2 minute + shot.
Omg I just finished watching this movie like 5 sec ago I love this song it's one of my favs did you know this movie was made in 3D but when it was relesed the 3D Fad was over so most theaters just showed it in 2D. I wish I could see it in 3D that would be cool!
I'm always amazed at the workmanship that went into these old musical numbers -- the tight choreography and people who could actually sing and dance, the jazzy orchestral arrangements, the sets, the gorgeous colors, the swooping camerawork. Who would have thought that in less than ten years, this genre of movie would be practically extinct? And we're all the poorer for it.
"Chicago"? "The Producers"? "Hairspray"? They don't even come close. Thank God for TCM.
I agree; I think it's that today's movie people think we can't handle this kind of style. My biggest complaint is that when filming dances, today's directors feel the need to cut back and forth, instead of keeping the camera on the dancers, like in Hairspray's "You Can't Stop the Beat" or Chicago's "Cellblock Tango"
A lot of folks blame MTV for the prevailing visual style that is executed in most modern movie musicals. After 25 years of music video-viewing, today's movie-goeers are accustomed to erratic camera movements and quick edits that are supposed amp up the visual excitment of a dance number. However, I, too, prefer the old style. If the performers are good, there's really no need to jazz up the camera work.

you're a ridiculous pervert
babbagecabb 4 years ago
I actually don't think you're too far from the truth.
If you look at the entire musical, and the innuendo, in actuality, that is probably part of the song.
Sorrin27 4 years ago
this show was written SO long ago
things didnt even mean that back that
babbagecabb 4 years ago
It was only, what, the 1930's? Innuendo's been around for much longer than that. I'm sure it was done completely on purpose.
gigametroid99 4 years ago
its not a dirty song
Porter didnt intend this song to be like that
its a rythmic mechanism
"Tom Dick Or Harry" is an expression meaning "any old man"
because those were three common names
its nothing dirty
babbagecabb 3 years ago 2
The harmony in this song is insane. I'm Gremio in my school's production. I'll try to get video up in late March or early April when it's done.
