  • I just noticed the comments about the jet at 4:07, I had to go back and stop the vid when I saw it too, I admit I had to think about it because the Japs had some prototype jets they were working on but I didn't think they actually got any into combat and the profile doesn't fit any designs I've seen. After seeing so many of these films you start seeing many of the same shots in totally different contexts like eastern front stuff with Normandy vids, who knows where the actual footage originated.

  • @bloggerjoe there is no need to compair them there are the same people giving their lives no one had it worse there is even a video of a vet saying that our soldiers are still the same its called "Reflections on Iwo Jima: Have Marines changed?"

  • war is such a beautiful thing, without war we would not have 747s and the engine

  • its sad that people dont give a damn bout history : (

  • My grandfather Col. A.E. Bob Von Holle is mentioned in all three of these clips!

  • @MrS5099 Many reasons but generally the Okinawans were considered lesser people by the Japanese, even though they were considered Japanese citizens. Also, by the time Okinawa was to become a battle the Japanese had little in the way of shipping or air force to move anything, much less move lesser ppl.

  • this video has a lot of footage that is not Okinawa....the jet is not ww2...some of this footage is Iwo Jima

  • @billybobrustupid If you read the comments below, you can see the jet (F9F Panther) was noted--it was an editing error in the production--a clip from Korea.--that was pretty obvious. The remainder of the footage is indeed Okinawa

  • Okinawa

    I like that name ^_^

  • Bob Von Holle is my grandfather and one of Kentucky's most decorated war heroes. He just recently passed away so finding this video featuring his story is really amazing.

  • You are welcome!...I watched these too in high school...about the best vids you could watch way back then (long before History Channel !)

  • hey is paulino a commen last name in the philipines? have you ever heard it before.

  • good one.lol. i hated that mission

  • Very interesting to see a F9F panther in this ww2 footage.

  • Yea--it has been noted before (see comments below)--the editors goofed -- probably pulled in some footage from a Korean War documentary....you would think they would have noticed a jet!

  • Exactly !!

  • It actually looks a lot like a P-80 Shooting Star, but I don't believe they saw any action in WWII...

  • Yeah, but that was a Banshee. Saw action in Korea.

  • Take a look at the plane at 4:08 in the video... ???

  • Yea...the editiors goofed--that looked like a Korean War-era F9F jet....how'd they miss that?

  • my dads grandfather was in this wore too i wonder if hes in here ill have to ask my dad but his last name was dimpsy

  • wow you should be proud that your great grandfather gave honor to your family name my grandfather was a filipino soldier and after the war in bohol islands he was assigned USS Hafford because of the needed reinforcements in okinawa hehehe im really proud that my grandpa killed a japanese general and had his sword as a souvenir ^_^

  • Thats an Awsome story! my great uncle from Montreal fought on Dieppe, he was bayoneted in the back and was captured, but he escaped from the moving train and sucessfully escape with three pals and the help of the french resistance, especially MI-9. Normally after Mi-9 helps you, you couldn't go back to the war, but they instead offered him to join Mi-9, he did, and evaded Germans, help Pow escapees go across the Channel and survived the war. Unfortinately he died recently

  • My great grandfather was in WWI, grandfather fought in this battle, and has a book that documents his unit (highly decorated one too ^^)

Now I think I might go join the SEALs...

  • Thanks 4 posting-at 3;20 a clib shows 2 landing craft from the ship USS Okinogan) I was a signalman on.during the invasion. we carried 160 wounded off the Island.

  • Thank you for viewing and your comment--always great to hear direct from our WW2 vets....I just looked up the history on your ship, the USS Okanogan (APA-220)--very interesting!....Thanks for sharing!

  • thank your from the bottom of my heart for what you did for our country.

It takes a complete person to stand up and say "I will do it" when the stakes are so high

  • thanx for Postin!!!

  • At 4:07 there is a 2-second clip of a Korean War-era jet--an editing error in the original series (they did a Korea story too)....ooops...
