American propaganda... The facts: This mission was one of the costliest for the USAAF in the European Theater, with 53 aircraft and 500 aircrewmen lost. It was the worst loss ever suffered by the USAAF on a single mission, and its date was later referred to as "Black Sunday": 310 aircrewmen were killed, 108 were captured, and 82 wounded. Allied estimated a loss of 40% of the refining capacity at the Ploiești refineries, some refineries were untouched. The damage was repaired within weeks...
