@kduck1009 about 5 times less expensive.... slugs are about 1 dollar a piece. Wax slugs cost about 15-25 cents to produce each, so it is a much more cost effective alternative to practice with a form of slug, and to see what kind of damage it can do.
@jossi166 It would be cool to test that. One thing looks certain is that it looks entirely able to make a potentially lethal wound. It has the energy that's for sure.
Ya know I never will understand some people who wanna know if you can cycle these after ya tell them not to and they still want to. Kinda like me telling my teenage friend George not to poke the barrel tip of the gun in the water when he saw a catfish swimming in the creek. He did it anyway and pulled the trigger to boot! It split the shotgun in half! And his dad tanned his hide. When he says don't cycle them but shot as singles. He means it!. Luckly George is still alive. Darwin I guess...?
Those shells look like they have some serious power. But is there any chance of ever doing a gelatin test? Would like to know if this is going to hit them like a hammer and not penetrate or blow holes in them.
Yeah I'm not sure why some discredit 20ga shotguns, it's not that they're weak, 12ga is just stronger. I think they're a good balance between recoil and power personally.
i have a couple quick questions iraqveteran will the shells cycle through my pump action shotguns? is there any danger shooting them out of choked barrels
@rdnk72182 neither will safely cycle since the process of making them weakens the shell's integrity. the cut shell will likely break in half in the action while you pump to chamber the shell and the wax slugs can be crushed during the same process since the crimp would usually protect it from this. as for chokes, no problems for either.
@EFG44 They used to be very common actually, but fell out of fashion and the auto loaders and pump actions took over. You can still get these on the used market though if you really want one.
@Jesses001I'm an Australian in melbourne, so pump shotguns aren't allowed, and auto loaders are the price of a small car, How much did that shotgun set you back?
@EFG44 Oh, Australian...good luck with those gun laws. Anyway, I bought two bolt action shotguns with box detachable mags, 18" barrels. One 12Ga for $105 and a 20Ga for $75. That is in the US though. They are cheap here because there is not a large demand for them. A double barrel barrel of some kind may be a good option for you as well.
@mjr350 Not in victoria, their attitude is, why need a pump shotgun when a double barrel does the same job? It's bullshit because I love pump shotguns ;_;
I own this same gun and its amazing, after i put in a little work restoring it. and i only payed 100 bucks for mine from a good friend. such a fun gun.
My grandfather has a stevens bolt action .410. The only problem is when you shoot it the spring tube comes out. The little nub on it that locks it in is in good shape as is the slot it fits it. Any ideas how to correct this problem? Thanks and thanks for making these entertaining and educational videos
Hey iraqvet! I love the lost arts and expediant shot shell vids! I myself have loads of (safe) fun with expediant shells. Recently i was thinking what to do with a few 16ga shells that had no box and where at the moment useless as my model 12 16ga is OUt of action. I thought about how to use it in a 1913 vintage 12ga stevens single shot w/full choke. Answer, Duck Tape!!! Wrap the sucker up and stick her in flush to the ejector and snap her shut! Boom! Patterned beautifuly too!!! Maby u can try
I've been trying to pick up some bolt actions but the one caliber I want no one seems to have I'm looking for one chambered in 308 Winchester, but I'm looking for an older one and not a newer one.
That's because 308 winchester is a newer cartridge. You're not gonna find one that's made before 1952, because that's when the cartridge was introduced. Just pick up a 30-06 if you're looking for something with more age on it.
@109268 Yea I know about the dating on the cartridge, I'm more or less looking for a older bolt action from the 60's to the late 70's not something brand new out of the box. I've got a few 30-06, got a few other bolt actions as well. But I like newer weapons don't get me wrong, but theres something that the older bolt actions that can't be beat.
nice gun, the only bolt action shotgun I've seen was a .410 webely and it was a nice little gun. didn't get to shoot it though. are wax slugs and cut shells particularly lethal? will they penetrate a persons body etc?
@thegreatsamon The wax's purpose is to hold the lead together during flight. When a wax slug impacts a target, the pellets "collide" with each other and share the kinetic energy of the slug by themselves.
This leads to them spreading after penetration. Think of a "improvised" Glaser Safety bullet.
@scooby311 You would have to lower the amount of powder in the shell because in short range the wad and wax would punch into skin.
If you're planning on using it, just don't aim at humans. Creating less than lethal loads usually end up with charges of "malicious intent" instead of being considered "self-defense"

What kind of steel are you shooting? The reason I ask is because of the close range at which you are shooting with the traditional 20 ga. slugs. If i remember correctly even with AR500 plates it is not suggested to shoot them with slugs at close range. Maybe I'm wrong.
@williamED15 Yeah, you don't come across bolt-action shotguns all that often. It's interesting that pump-action rifles are rare and pump-action shotguns are common, but bolt-action rifles are common and bolt-action shotguns are rare.
Both systems (as well as the lever-action) work just fine in either type of firearm.

lets one turn a game load into a slug, if one needed. Same with cutshells..
If I knew I was gunna need a slug, and didn't have any, a wax-slug would be my go-to.
If I was out-and-about, and only had gameloads, a cutshell will do in a pinch, and only takes a jiffy to do.

@deeisneat Slugs, when bought usually around $1 each, you can make 25 wax slugs for around $7.
