  • This explains:

    Leftist ideology across the globe

    The vanishment of phylosophy classes

The popular belief of global warming

And indeed, the election of Obama.

  • Oddly, I disagree with my "groups" so often, many doubt I'm part of that "group".

  • so is this how organized religion works?

  • @FumingPoliticalPunk it's a good thing we republicans dont do that :P

  • good job

  • how bout making a video on the milgram experimen?

  • This is somthing I need to meditate on, intresting......

  • Go to 3:00 if you've taken a psych class before.

Also you forget (at least, I think you do) some of the followups to this study. If there is a single dissenter, people are much less likely to show this conforming behavior. The specific phenomenon is pretty limited.

  • second time i watched this very cool add to favorites!

  • I think that this also explains why someone who is typically non-violent, is so susceptible to the 'mob mentality'. For example, rioting. How many people get swept up in the hysteria of the moment, only to sit back later, probably in a jail cell somewhere & both they & their families are like WTF? Remeber the riots in Seattle or LA? How many of those people were simply there, got swept up & reacted because so many others were?

  • I dont agree with everything this guy says but i reallly respect him. I like it people who present an arguement that is intellegent reasonable and non-absurd no matter if i agree with it or not.

  • lol so I paused at 2:36.... I can't wait to see how he ties this one into politics.

  • This experiment can be turned upside down (or at least be twisted).

A small test where a small group of ppl were to review a tv show. Only 1 reviewer was fake. They all liked it except ofc the fake guy (who was the last to be asked in the study group). He would much rather "enjoy a glass of wine with his wife on a Saturday night". They all agreed and instantly reviewed the show as being less good.

  • I have an experience with this in real life. My wife and I have political and philosophical views far outside of the mainstream, we're radicals by most people's estimation. When we met, my wife was quite a centrist and I was only slightly outside of the mainstream. As our viewpoints started to become more similar, they became more and more radical, further away from the beliefs we were raised in and surrounded by. I think that this was possible because we had each other - just one other person.

  • Very nice Lee! I'd like to see more of this.

  • Prime Example: Obama's "Hope and Change" no one really knew what that meant for those who had Voted for him, now a lot of those same voters have buyers remorse, along with the other 47% of us REAL Americans. Asch would be proud of the Mental Midget Media for their aid in the application of his Conformity Experiment.

  • Only vocal libertarian? Hardly.

  • I'm all about Ron Paul and I cant stand that because he is not "main stream" no one will take him seriously. I still praise the hell out him every chance I get and I have had him as my facebook profile for a very long time. Spreading the word. I will write him in as a candidate if I need too.

  • I'd like to know the party or political affiliation of the 40% who conform to the group. But I think I know what the results would be.

  • @default013 I doubt the result will be what you expect.

  • Comment removed

  • @mr82769 Right, it couldn't be the people who believe that a consensus on unproven science constitutes scientific fact and can therefore enact far reaching regulations based on said "science" (regulations that coincidentally conform to a political ideology as well). It's probably the ones who keep trying to stop the government from forcing them to conform to the group, who most conform to the group. Very interesting ... but stupid.

  • @default013 Right but.... Wroooooooong. His comment was obviously meant as an attack against democrats (or... *siiigh*... "liberals"). My point was that 40 % on each side of the political spectrum vote the way they do because their social network does it.

It is always best to try and understand your opponent and his arguments before claiming they are stupid. I know it isnt easier but it sure makes you look stupid otherwise.

  • @mr82769 You're right about that. I wasn't calling you stupid - but its OK, we all make mistakes. I'm sure there are people like that on both sides as well, but I'm also sure that there are significantly more conformists - amongst those who advocate for conformity.

  • @mr82769 I'll enlighten you - I was actually making a somewhat obscure joke (not that obscure for those over 30). Watch this YouTube vid and you'll understand: QlVWArmysic

  • @mr82769 So the 40% is equally split along party lines? Nice dodge.

  • @default013 Its no dodge. And no its no split. Its shared equally.

  • emo kids

  • This is interesting stuff. It made me think of the Milgram experiment.

  • thanks Mr. Doren now I know how Obama got elected

  • @haydenman2 Not a good analogy because there's a much more clear division of opinion within politics.

  • High school what could be a better epitome of the Asch experiment. Even the people who are "being different" are just like their friends.

  • I think it's funny that all the people saying he's not a Libertarian in his Asch Conformity video are liberals complaining that he isn't attacking Conservatives like everyone else.

  • voting for ruddy stupit capitalists even they are wrong because they own the media

  • So 40% of people are liberals?

  • Well I think that the idea of legalization of drugs is a good point. I keep going back to it should, but when I talk to others they say how wrong I am. But I usually start to drift back over to the idea of legalization of drugs.

  • All I need to say is one word "religion"

  • @9bob8 The word could just as easily be Civilization, Culture, Community, or Ideology in general, not just Religion. You artificially isolate the phenomenon to a particular subset, which I presume you disdain, but religion is a bigger subject than social norms vice-versa. Most religions exist in spite of pressure to conform, more than because of it, and all groups have some by definition. Your statement and its purpose might remind that atheist communities aren't lacking this feature either.

  • @NobodyImportant2008 I only wanted to point out what I said so before you start saying and presuming maybe just take in what I said and think about it, not go and say things like "disdain" because once I googled it and found out what it meant, I was stunned to see that someone thinks they can presume so much about another person from just one thing they say.

  • @9bob8 I did think about what you said. I also responded to it. The bulk of my reply pertained to why I don't think it's unique to, or within, religion; challenging the relevance of the association being made.

I think my presumption was reasonable. The association was intended to be meaningful & I don't see many ways for it to have been benevolent toward its subject in this context. It resembles the sort of snide derision typical of militant atheists. Your indignation doesn't show me my error.

  • I have experienced this is group debates, classrooms of course, and back when I worked at Starbucks when we did coffee tastings. Probably happens at other tasting type events too.

  • You are not a libertarian you support the right and you often back up their often false claims. Your video editorials are one sided hit pieces.

  • @golden454 No he doesn't. He may be a conservative PERSON, so he may be more sympathetic towards conservative forms of government but that doesn't mean he believes in that.

If someone says they're a libertarian, they probably are (except Bill Maher).

  • @golden454 Dear God.. and he's not even a real Scotsman either!

  • We did this back when I was in college, except it was changed a bit. We had an open class debate and raised our hands after each subject on if we agreed or not but then wrote down how we actually felt. More people lied when they raised their hands because they didn't want to be called out or have their friends know they felt about a certain topic.

  • Your continents do not spin proportionally to the rotation of your earth good sir.

  • Someone should perform a variation of the Asch experiment in a gallery of contemporary art. Reveal a buncha phoney people it would.

  • Only 40%? That's a good sign for society--less than half at least.

  • I thought about voting this video up... but then I saw that 437 voted up, tricky! Tricky!.... I still say I'm a rebel for voting up. Go me.

  • voting videos up or down

  • I feel this is a big reason why Ron Paul had such a uphill battle. He was never legitamized by the mainstream media and therefore was thought to be unelectable. I mean seriously... How often you hear people say they like someone but they won't vote for them because they are unelectable? All the time.

  • @matt4787 Ron Paul is unelectable for president because he incapable of gathering more than a few percent of the vote. Whatever the reason. Get it?

He was legitimized by the media because of 1) this inability 2) because of his stance on Iraq on that question he was one of the lefts housetrained republicans.

  • @matt4787 well to be fair, some one electability is how they would appeal to different groups. Now if Ron Paul went up against Obama, he would win in a landslide, i am not even i Ron Paul supporter and i can tell you, he would definitely win.

  • This video is terrible. It shows you as a know-nothing Ultra-Right Winger. (Are all the liberals gone? Good.). Loved it, Lee, as usual. Somebody speculated this was how Kerry got nominated in 2004.

  • important to point out that these people did not accept the truth of the others, they just went along with the group's ideas on truth. As the secret ballot showed people just contain their idea of what is true when there is a potential state of conflict. it seems to me a defense mechanism that allows a member of a group to not be cast aside or looked down upon by the group. i don't think it is a sign of irrationality nor immaturity in humans.

  • @whimppy I agree.

  • This study proves nothing since most people who take in information aren't being tested .

  • i saw the title and i immediatly recognized it from my AP Psych class! thank you lee you made me proud of myself

  • The Mainstream Media proves Asch conformity. Is it just an experiment? God, wouldn't that be good news, just an experiment.

  • I've a feeling that just about every politician falls into normative conformity when they just vote according to the rest of their party. Conversely, I can sometimes justify informational conformity in cases where I have no opinion regarding an issue or simply don't know the answer to a question just in that I assume the answers of the people I surround myself with to bear more merit than no answer at all.

  • I am just curious what would happen if some of the subjects in an Asch experiment had Asperger's Syndrome.

I have Asperger's Syndrome and I am a Christian conservative. This is just my point of view but I believe my Asperger's Syndrome gave me a lot of immunity from peer pressure and increased my ability to think critically. And yes, there are times when I part ways with conservatives. For instance, the federal law most definitely is the sole arbiter of immigration enforcement, not states!

  • The other day in my Mythology class, people were giving presentations for their projects and at the end, are supposed to answer questions. Every single time, there will be only one person asking a question and then right after they ask their question, 5 other people suddenly have one as well

  • LOL "the only vocal libertarian on youtube"

  • @SuperPinheadMan I didn't know that the RNC would fund libertarian ideas. who knew.

  • If not for the Asch phenomenon how could black people vote in such a solid bloc? No other group, demographic, political block, or race vote so uniformly.

  • so 40% of people are sheep. that explains how Obama was elected.

  • How about the Asch Experiment as it relates to young Congressmen being forced to vote with the party even if they disagree with a Bill?

  • libertarian means you think freedom is cool but you're afraid of it.

  • @juliecranford Please explain

  • @Jewavenger Libertarian means supporting freedom, individual liberty, life, liberty and property. Someone who is a small L libertarian still believes there needs to be a government that infringes on our freedom "just a little" for "safety". Because they're afraid of freedom.

  • @juliecranford, ya, no it doesn't.

  • If I think it is right, and one million idiots (liberals) think it is wrong, I would not bend...

  • @theshaggyshow Why do you hate freedom?

  • I see the asch experiment taking place all the time on the internet. Even from the inception of the internet back in the old Napster days where music exchange was very common, it was very common to find people who didn't like any kind of music. "I hate you, and I hate the bands you like" mentality since it was always more popular to dislike something than to stand out and say something is good.

  • Lee, what makes you think you're a libertarian? Are you sure you're not a conservative?

  • @hallavast Fake Libertarians call themselves conservative, too.

  • You might want to describe the Stanley Milgram Experiment.

It is far more profound than the Asch Experiment.

    Walt

  • Has anyone ever watched "seven angry men"? Its a great story that puts a good twist on the situation the Ashe Conformity Experiment is testing... its also a good lesson on what Reasonable Doubt is.

  • @theyoda55 do you mean 12 angry men? Because THAT movie is a good lesson about reasonable doubt and conformity.

  • @hallavast oh, yes. Thats it, for some reason i remembered it as 7. But apparently thats a different movie from around the same time. The movie is "Twelve Angry Men" starring Henry Fonda.

  • Hey Lee, you've probably seen this clip but for what it's worth the old TV show Candid Camera did they're own similar (humorous) spin to The Asch Experiment.

Just add what's below after YouTube.com in the brower

    /watch?v=B738X-ibz2o

Or just do a search for The Asch Experiment posted about 11 months ago.

  • Great video Lee. I honestly think this is one of your top five.

  • Well, I thumbed up this video because everyone else did...

  • I'm not sure what you are trying to get across with this video. The most basic assumption you could make is that you are trying to insinuate that the "liberal"' opposition to the Tea Party movement is some kind of mob mentality, but I think you are over-extending the research.

Even with the data you mention it only takes a group of 2 to form any kind of resolute group. The thoughts that this is restricted to any kind of sub-culture is just silly.

  • Herd mentality can clearly be seen in American politics. Despite mountains of evidence, most conservatives (Libertarians typically exempted) believe that the Republican party stands for smaller government, and that Reagan exemplified this attitude. Similarly, liberals (I can't think of any exceptions) believe that expanding state power has improved the American economy and standard of living. Both are false statements but are propagated by group think and our media: our irrational discourse.

  • @chuska8383 Expanding state power has improved European standard of living. So... my guess is that the American bureaucracy sucks. Poor health and social services are not an intrinsic flaw of big government, and I'm not implying you've stated so.

  • @Pomme843 I disagree that state power can ever improve the lives of anybody. I think an even bigger fallacy is the idea that those who believe in state power like yourself have the right to initiate force and violence on those who disagree by imposing taxes and regulations. Everyone must comply with personal property rights...except the government. Nobody may demand how someone else can use their property...except the government. Nobody may have guns...but the government. See what I mean?

  • @Pomme843 Case you haven´t noticed Europe is broke, bankrupted at the brink of collapse

  • I only voted thumbs up because more people had voted thumbs up than thumbs down... and I got nervous. Haha! I'm kidding.

  • ........Peer Review.

How often have you heard a study defended by the words Peer Review. A fallacy, if ever there was one. As if those magic words somehow override all logic and critical thinking.

  • Democracy comes to mind.

  • Asch : "Sarah Palin is an idiot"

Me : "Could you explain why"

Asch: "Because of the stupid s**t that comes out of her mouth"

    Me: "Oh really, like what?"

Asch: "Like she said that she could see Russia from her house."

    Me: *FACEPALM*

  • @thereprieve excellent example....

  • Dude, there's lots of vocal libertarians on youtube. watch us some time.

  • @pinegrove33 Indeed.

  • @pinegrove33 Hey Bernard !!! me Libertarian also...

  • @pinegrove33 yes if only there were vocal libertarians anywhere but on the internet.

  • @pinegrove33

He said when he first started making the videos. And a lot of those vids were rated poorly based on bias. The comments were downright slanderous.

  • @karlschenkable Yes sir, one click and you'd see I started a year before he did. That's not responsive.

  • @pinegrove33 - Lee says "when I started".

  • @RocktheStageNYC Dumbo, i started a year before he did. Don't you click anything before you type?

  • @pinegrove33 - don't you think before you simply insult people for no reason other than petty jealousy. "Look at me, look at me! I started a year before HE did!". Really?

and why in the world would I click your channel? Just because we both hold Libertarian views doesn't mean I have to listen to you.

  • @RocktheStageNYC No petty jealousy on my part and I didn't insult Lee. He's a great guy, you're a zero though. What i said was, "Dude, there's lots of vocal libertarians on youtube. watch us some time." This is accurate. And you had to mischaracterize my point in order to defend your laziness. All you had to do was make a click and you could have saw that what i said was right. You should just apologize rather than lie when you make a mistake. You are lazy, dumb, and also have no honor.

  • @RocktheStageNYC I wouldn't want you watching my channel anyway I'd have to explain words like "the" and "this" to you. Being low is okay but advertising how low you are mentally in a public forum is pathetic. Dr. Seuss would be about your speed...oh, and take notes while you're watching. You'll confuse the Lorax with the Grinch.

  • @pinegrove33 - this comment and the one above are exactly why people like you give Conservatism and Libertarians a bad name. Internet tough guy - woo I'm scared. You are what you hate - an elitist snob who think he's smarter than everyone else - just on the right side of the political spectrum.

BTW you wouldn't last 10min in an intellectual contest with me. IQ 156 and former Mensa member. Just because I didn't click on your channel doesn't make me dumb - just selective.

  • Comment removed

  • @ecsheats - "former" in regards to Mensa means "inactive". I was actually quite active within the Mensa organization in the 1990's and did some events here in NYC for Mensa with another "former" member, actress Geena Davis.

  • Barack Obama is still seen by a lot of people as a good President. And, of couse, Bush is retarded. And, Rep. Giffords was the fault of the TEA Party. Pretty much the entire mainstream media is Asch at work.

  • @CaitiffFTW It is retarded to blame giffords shooting on the tea party. It was a lone gunman who is a mentally deranged atheist and communist and even owned mein kampf. He had no connection to any tea party whatsoever. Please stop spreading George Soros lies.

  • @nurbSoldier No shit. But, the question of the day was to name things that people only go along with because the group does. And, themainstream media says everything I mentioned with alarming regularity.

  • @CaitiffFTW No, no, don't give me "NO SHIT", not when what I said directly debunked what you said. If you think I am debunking something so frigging obviously wrong, then you should not have wasted your time posting it. For example, if you post "Abraham Lincoln was the 1st president of the United States", don't be surprised when a bunch of people correct you to say that it was George Washington. And no, you did not ask that question. And who is 'Asch at work'?

  • @nurbSoldier Mein Gott..... You didn't watch this video at all, did you? Or, are you stil have trouble decyphering Blue's Clues? My original post was a direct answer to the question that Lee asked at the end of his video.

"Who's Asch?" Did you not even bother reading the title of the video, either?

  • @CaitiffFTW i got this video mixed up with another one.

  • @nurbSoldier He "even" owned Mein Kampf? What's that supposed to mean? I own a Swedish copy of the book. Does that have anything to do with being mentally deranged, atheist or communist? Or you do just generally prejudge those who own such books? Does it make me a "nationalsocialist"? What's the matter?

  • @Pomme843 many news sources speculate that jared loughner is going to have an insanity defense. his own school declared him insane, at least in the form of demanding that he get a psychiatric clean bill of health evaluation before returning. he never got one. he was reported to scream at people in class randomly. various news sources and even in his own videos claim him to be atheist.

  • @Pomme843 quotes from himr: "The government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar,".

--"No I won't pay debt with a currency that's not backed by gold and silver!" ... ""If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.

    I define terrorist. "

--"In conclusion, my ambition - is for informing literate dreamers about a new currency; in a few days, you know I'm conscience dreaming! Thank you!"

  • @nurbSoldier Are you mistaing me for someone else? My question was: *What* is wrong with owning a copy of Mein Kampf? Please answer the question directly.

  • @Pomme843 none at all, there is a distinction between becoming and understanding

  • @realhxq Ah. 'Cause you wrote that "[i]t was a lone gunman who is a mentally deranged atheist and communist and even owned mein kampf." I just didn't see what his subscription to atheism or him owning Mein Kampf had to do with anything.

  • @CaitiffFTW you should read Decision Points before saying bush is retarded.

  • @CaitiffFTW another excellent example

  • Comment removed

  • hey, that experiment has kinda scary implications for trial jury's lol

  • im in th military, and yes its one big asch experiment

  • The Asch Experiment would be applicable to me because I studied Middle East history, and so when all of the crap about Iraq and Islam, etc. started up, I told people what I basically knew through study and such. I found that people didn't agree with me, and they seemed to believe whatever they were told on the news. It didn't matter that I had studied this at the university. I also found that Democrats have since shut up about the war.

I try not to be like this. I am human, though.

  • Wouldn't it be interesting to conduct a version of the experiment which tests for degrees of conformity between people of different political persuasions.

No prizes for guessing the outcome of that experiment; we all know that the political left is centred around collectivism and conformity.

  • I highly recommend Phocian in Plutarch's Lives as a counter example.

When agreed with by the group he forced himself to rethink his position

because if they agreed he must be wrong about it.

  • Shallow depth of field (camera). I remember this experiment, very interesting stuff. Adorno might have a thing to say on this subject.

  • Maybe a conservatarian (somewhat), at best.

You know it's funny. You guys on the Right call guys like Allen Ginsberg (Ginsburg?) cultural marxists and bitch about how "liberal" he was and blah blah blah, but he spoke out against CONFORMITY in the 1950s! conformity all over American society.

Yet some college does a recent study, and you FINALLY wake up and speak out against it, lee?

  • Did you just call yourself a "libertarian", Lee?

I know libertarians. Some of my closest YT and fb friends have been libertarians. I even know a few from my college campus chapter of NORML.

    You're no libertarian.

  • The Tea Party is one big Asch experiment. At least HALF of the teabaggers are ignorant, misinformed TWITS who believe any old dumb thing that morons like Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey and other conservative leaders tell them. They're not "intellectual" in the slightest! They're just a bunch of tools for guys like David Koch to play with to keep himself underregulated.

Remember that whole Americans for Prosperity event with the blood on the hands signs? comparing HC to nazism.

  • Who was it that discovered all the bullshit with the Tea Party's BIGGEST candidates, like Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell? The so-called "liberal media"! Teabaggers could've never discovered that or held them accountable on it on their own, like the fact that Sharron Angle's OWN HUSBAND has federal gov't healthcare, yet she's totally against it for everyone else. Or the fact that Joe Miller has taken COUNTLESS subsidies from the gov't, yet he claims that shit is "unconstitutional."

  • Did the tea party hold sharron angle accountable when she talked about "second amendment remedies", or when Michele Bachmann said we need to be "armed and dangerous"?? Hell no

They're too blinded by their phony ideology

  • @whoo689 Did you hold Islam accountable when democrats destroyed the World Trade Center or when the democratic party shot about 40 people at Fort Hood?

You didn't have a problem with hate filled rhetoric then did you bitch?

Then it was all "we gotta find out why they hate us."

  • @whoo689 what does this have to do with the "Asch experiment"? Are you a troll?

  • @wikicross This person is obvious proof that the liberal trolls on here often don't watch the videos in question.

  • @whoo689 Maybe some do, but liberals are the same way. They support what the other liberals support without even getting their facts straight. If you want to see it firsthand just go to any college campus. I talk to people fresh out of college all the time and they just spout the same old liberal songs. Because they don't have all the facts they lose the debate every time. Everyone wants something to stand for and it is just easier to follow a group.

  • Even though I really like this video, it was really hard to press the "like" button!

    Too much conformity!!! :)

But I went ahead and did it anyway.

  • Its like liberal GROUP THINK. Most people believe there can never be a peaceful 'Palestinian State'. But when you put them in a group of other people, they believe that peace is achievable with a terror state.

  • On Youtube, most viewpoints are severely from the left. When I type in Bill O'reilly, the search gives me Amazing Atheist, YoungTurks, and Liberal Viewer. When I deal with Men's Rights issues, or the problems in South Africa, the search gives, YoungTurks, Liberal Viewer, Amazing Atheist, Fred.

  • The Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram Experiment at Yale:

The best examples I can think of, Not only did they prove the Asch experiment They also showed the danger and ease of involvement by the Administrator to believe and to conform into the role as Warden.(Stanford)

Professor Philip Zimbardo, Stanford, is a Genius and he was compelled to conform, Even though he could have stopped it at any time.

This shows us the darker side within all humans and how Nazis were just following orders.

  • Outstanding! (And this is my opinion only! LOL)

  • You are Libertarian? I thought you were Conservative. I'd love to know what your ideal government would be and what changes you'd made to the Constitution to make it a stronger document for Liberty.

  • Vote for Lee! Everyone else did!

  • I'll say I like this video...if you say you liked it.

  • Wow, this sounds a lot like Obama voters. They know that he hates this country and is totally wrong for political office, but they will never admit that he's terrible because they lack the courage to stand out from their fellow Liberals.

  • Ad populum. It sucks.

  • I drive truck and we're paid by the hour. Guys are constantly comparing the amount of time others take and purposely slowing down or more rarely speeding up so that they don't upset anyone instead of just doing their best.

  • Something similar happened to me in the 2nd grade, but it was not staged. I would've gotten all answers correct on a math test, but because several classmates were sure that one question should be answered a certain way, I went back to the teacher and changed my answer. So I got 1 incorrect answer on the test because I changed it, and my previous answer was correct. Only one student got all answers correctly.

I'll probably never forget this lesson.

  • Definitely in the classroom. I had a teacher in highschool that would purposely write things wrong on the board and most of the time nobody would say anything.

  • I also saw a similar experiment with an elevator. The actors would face away from the door

  • I wonder how alienated the 7 people who disliked this video feel.

  • Lee, could you try to speak more slowly? I know you have a lot to squeeze in, but some folks (especially in the South) may have trouble following you at that pace.

  • I hate the kind of ppl who answer wrong in this.

  • We tested that in college and i was amazed of the results. It really hit me when i conformed and picked the answer i knew was wrong. Then and there it made me realize that i needed to think for myself no matter what other people think. Be a leader not a follower. Think for yourselves

  • We tested that in college and i was amazed of the results. It reAlly hit me when i conformed and picked the awnser i knew was wrong. Then and there it made me realise that i needed to think for myself no matter what other people think. Be a leader not a follower. Think for yourselves

  • lol... as I'm typing this, I'm watching "The Last Boy Scout".

Joe Hollenbeck would have definitely *phailed* the experiment. :)

  • "Conformity" is not in my job description!

  • Herd mentality. You see it every day & when I was in JH, poor & VERY unpopular, it ruled my life. Either I wanted to "Fit in" so as not to be tortured or it was the kids fallowing the "leaders" who helped make my life a living hell. It took getting married & having children IN SCHOOL, to change & some would say I'm now too outspoken. Maybe they're right, but when I get that feeling in my gut telling me to back down THAT'S when I yell loudest. People either love or hate me & I love it.

  • In 2nd Grade (1970?) my teacher gave us a math problem. After, she asked me for my answer. Then told me it was wrong, the answer was something else. I redid the problem as I was taught. Same result. She asked the class who was right. They all said she was right (and looked at me like I was crazy). I did the problem again and got the same answer. I didn't know what to say at that point. My figures gave my answer. She then told us that *I* was right, and not to believe authority for its own sake.

  • @Hiraghm

In my high school social studies class (during the 1980 elections), my very liberal teacher would have us debate political issues. Usually the debate turned into 30-on-1 arguments. At the time I hated him for sitting there smirking while I was subjected to insults and vitriol (typical liberal arguments). Looking back, I think he was admiring my persistence in fighting for what I believed to be right and true.
