To ashweirdo: Africa has allot of natural resources, enough to elevate the continent to the richest on earth. The Problem is the African Statecraft (South Africa excluded) and overpopulation.

Jeffrey Sachs is right ofcourse, sterilization and education is the most logical way to go.

There was no poverty in Africa 50 years ago. Something must be going on in the world that caused this poverty. The West must rethink in its practices. There is an argument out there that Africans have large families. This is nonsense. We have always had large families dating back to ancient times and we never experience poverty. What cuase this poverty? Global economic equality and unfair practicies in global trade. You can fight poverty without fighting global inequality.

Africa doesn't have natural resources. The part of it that isn't desert is a jungle. That's that.

Africa has been poor for a very, very long time. And that's not going to change, despite what aid goes to them, due to that lack of resources.

Japan also has almost no natural resources (Africa has much more- especially oil), and they are one of the largest economies in the world. Africa has a hard time supporting their high need for imports, due to trade inequalities and debt burdens (among other things- disease). Sachs does a great job citing need for large scale debt cancelation but downplays the importance of trade power structure.

you have no idea how rich is Africa.Nigeria is a huge oil exporter and one of the poorest country.Sierra Leone, Congo and Angola have minerals and diamonds yet they are among poorest. Why?Africa is far from being jungle and desert as you say.But the way Africa was divided after the fall of colonies is one of the reason for today conflicts and poverty. Tribes are divided on 2 o3 countries, corrupt leaders where supported from outside.The education system also is a joke patched sometime by int aid

Africans don't just die without a cause. it is not normal. everything boils down to absence of quality, easy to access and affordable drugs.I lived in the mangrove forest of the niger-delta during all my childhood.I never made in through a month without the malaria parasite having its' was on my health, I didn't die. I thought polio was in check, wonderful, its like these diseases develop an intelligence of there own or someone is making them intelligent.

When I was involved in malaria control, I also propagated the widespread use of the larva-eating fish, Gambusia, for extensive dissemination in the large bodies of water in the catchment areas. Not only did I personally go to the mountains; I also went to the depths of the region in spreading the fish. The fish not only ate the larvae of the mosquitoes (of all species, including Anopheles), the adult fish were also quite nutritious when eaten by the malnourished children.
