I used to love this. As I am now a grown as woman I am always tripping on folks my age that never heard this song before. I used to come from High school and put it on.
I love the way this song starts off and builds up a momentum as it goes on .By the time you are almost at the end you are there, like a musical climax!!
The discipline and the spiritual high that Quincy's orchestra is on is outstanding, Jesus I am an English grad but I verbally can not not do this joint justice...words fail me
FYI...this is Herbie Hancock's composition. Quincy arranged and produced it for this album. You can find the original on Herbie Hancock's "Fat Albert Rotunda".
@aclean4u2 How Right You Are. Totally no disrespect to Herbie-especially since he's playing the keyboards on this-however with Quincy, he added those electronic strings and presto-changho, C L A S S I C studio magic!
What an experience. Whoever's mind inspired the violin solos in Quincy's interpretation of this song is pure genius ! I close my eyes and imagine the late Mr. Harry Lookofsky playing his violin solos! I see him in my mind's eye and he takes me to heaven! This is a masterpiece and after all these years it still bring me to tears with it's beauty.
guys, i recommend everyone to search: sam the kid - a manha seguinte; on youtube and check how he sampled this song, you will not regret listening to it i'm sure
I agree with JazzySaxplaya. This is real and Mr. Jones is one fabulous composer, conductor, producer and all the rest. I remember watching the show, "Ironside" as a little girl simply because I liked the music and theme song - which Mr. Jones wrote and produced (a very hip 10 year old!). I am captivated by the layers and themes in this piece, in particular, and how it builds and builds. So rich and beautiful; when a song makes goosebumps up and down your spine, it's one fabulous piece.
This album rocked. Quincy put together a masterpiece, as he always did. Fabulous writing, arranging, producing, and studio musicians/singers. Combine that with fascinating musical suites (like this) that always broke across and encompassed multiple eras and genres. This is why the man is a legend and his music is timeless.
Perhaps the problem is that most college stations don't play and appreciate jazz music like they used to. Or the program directors don't give the DJ's much leeway. We were fortunate enough to grow up with a healthy mix of funk, r&b, jazz and soul. I bet if you were to ask your average college student if they have any Jazz artists on their playlist...it'll probably be no!
What is happening to college radio anyway - does it even exist anymore ???!!!
This is true. Colleges used to be a big forum of appreciation for jazz music, and for artist to play live! At one time in the distant past, it wasone of the main genres of music being played on college radio and also live performances! Jazz is still the musicality boss! Robbie Love (Singer/Entertainer)
the shit we're exposed to day in day out on the radio will come and go, but classics like this remain timeless... note to the musicians: dont sell your soul to the devil that is the modern music industry, express yourself and free the soul, better to die a poor man who lit the soul in others with their music than a rich man who surrendered all he had for a quick buck
LISTEN TO JAZZY!!-when I laid hands on this Album, back in 1979, I have repeatedly listened to it with the same thrill and enjoyment I have from the very first time I heard it. I am constantly reminded of the summer of 1980, when I told my wife, as soon as we roll into Losangeles City limits, I'm going to let everyone Know I'm here.I reached down, grabbed my newly found treasure and let Herbie,Quincy and the crew escort me iinto Losangeles.
Real talent , creative ability and refinement come from Artists such as this. Cross Culturally and with out limit , unfettered by the 'Matrix' of CONtrol and deliberate dumbing down these express themselves freely and with no limitations. However these unbound self mastered Individuals retain their identities and abilities without becoming self indulgent and toxic to others. This is why their contributions are so timeless. Examples like this one and many others. THANKS for the post!
@deejay5627 wow I am a fan of jazz and a fan of Pharrell and I didn't even know this. As many times as I listened to this song right here, I didn't even know Pharell sampled it. Thanks for the info.
This is one of the greatest songs from one the greatest albums of all time. When Songs... came out I remember playin both sides over and over. Radio needs to play this cut today. Quincy arranging at his best. Unbelievable instrumentation!!!
I think I love this song more than the rest of you......sike.....I'm glad that there are people out there that still remember this stuff.....it cannot be duplicated...
Im srry but i gotta ask HOW CAN PEOPLE LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER AND HANNAH MONTANA GET HIGHER RATINGS THAN JAZZ i mean come on this is the real stuff right here
@JazzySaxplaya Sorry but Being mainstream nowdays has nothing to do with being talented. Back then, Artists would play instruments and sing with their raw natural talent. Not anmyore. WE still have these though. They are CLASSICS.
@babymck09 oh yes you've streesed the word - nowadays , michael jackson was mainstream but he got a lot talent though he cound't play any instrument , at least he sings well and dances perfectly , composes many nice songs
@babymck09 yeah but be famous never will be just or in sort have talent or anything... this just can help you a litle to get there... almost never those who are the most famous are the best of his style^^~~
just to make you think more about it:
do you think that jimy hendrix and all those well know people are the most skilled and talented than other genius that whe dont had the chance to know^^???
@JazzySaxplaya One thing about the 70s and 80s, if you listened to pop music, you would also hear jazz music, from time to time. I was serious jazz head in the 70s, 80s and also listened to pop occassionally. However, when Joe Sample came out with Street Life with Randy Crawford on vocals, it made it to the pop stations and was big hit. Nowadays, so many young people are not exposed unless they listen to parents music or find it on youtube.
@JazzySaxplaya Our society is being dumb down decade by decade. When I was high school (back in the 70s) my station stayed tuned to 107.5 KKGO, Los Angeles. Back then people my age to relate to the jazz. Back then people were more analytical. Today, this country is producing an army of robots. What they hear in the media, they mimic.
@JazzySaxplaya I dnt like them! Im a teen but i grew up and im still growing up ON THIS MUSIC! Jazz,Pop,R&B that's a REAL music! It's sad how kids nowadays dnt even know who Quincy Jones & Jimmy Smith are..
