I heard the instrumental version of this a few years. I can't remember who the saxophonist was but I loved it. Then a few years later, I heard Mel Torme sing it (I didn't know it was him at the time), I was floored. I ended up falling in love with Mel all over again. I wish I had listened to him more when he was still alive.
i think the velvet fog is actually pronouncing 'erudite' strictly correctly, and it is probably the best english word to convey his meaning; that is, in his opinion the arrangement is more masterly and conscientiously studied than others of its contemporary ilk.
I think any Sinatra offhand remark of this nature would be less clearly defined and a little 'looser' but thats just reflecting the different personalities of these two masters of their craft. vive la difference!
It is no more or less "ariadite?" lyrically. Wha, huh? I could not find "ariadite" "iriodite" or words of simillar spelling or phonetic pronounciations. Is he trying to entertain a jazz or more sophisticated classical audience here? Look pal, most of us out here are not musicians ok Mel? Why cant you talk more "gangsta" like Sinatra? LOL!
Not according to the book I read! Buddy Rich said," OK we won't have any fun any more". Fats Waller was kidnapped for a Mob party and got well paid as a result.
This may be the stupidest question you get today, but did Mel enjoy this? eventually, I mean? I mean, I could sort of see not talking to Buddy Rich for a long time after this....but not being a guy in the 50s, I don't know...
Buddy Rich had him "kidnapped" from a club they were playing driven round town and then thrown on stage to sing thinking he was still in the hands of his captors as he was blindfolded!

My favorite Mel Torme song, without a doubt.
Why does the drummer look like Will Ferrell with a big mustache and his hair combed back???

Hey this is great, haven't seen this in a while so thanks for the u/l.
Do you have the other performances from this set? Quiet nights (Corcovado) and Route 66 would be great to see again :)
