Jaqueline Bouvier, later married Kennedy, was in Britain, exactly in those days, to make a cover-up of the coronation of the Queen! As a reporter she asked people in the streets how they felt about the coronation and what their expectations were! Most of the people, especially women, cankeredly attacked journalist Jacqueline saying that the coronation was an abject ceremony from times past and with no connection to their lives! I hope this vision of things changed since then!
You are correct. Any person who studies a little history can conclude that the best political system is a Constitutional Monarchy. Many other 2former"colonies, of other empires have it bad with corruption and bureaucracy.
I was 9yrs old and living in Scotland, we had the only TV around it was 13 ins & b&we sat there enthralled, we must have had the day off from school bbecause all the kids were at our house, this was the culmination of a year of celebrations of all kinds, we school children recieved acup with the Queen on the front and it was filled with sweets,I still have the cup but not the sweets, I remember Queen Salote of Tonga , they even had a song about her thanks for great vid.
I've heard that two radio commentators made an observation when the Queen of Tonga was passing by. One asking who the man sitting in the coach with the Queen was. Might it be her husband? The other commentator said "I think it's her lunch".
@charliesmillton I like the way you said that. I am American and I don't play the patriotism game either. My parents taught me to be a citizen of the world. Because that is a much better way of understanding the world and others.
Well, I'm a Canadian landed emigrant. I work there for a year but God bless Canada found it a bit boring. The high point was a debate between Laveq and Trudeau. Nonetheless, I have great respect and affection for Canada and hope we will continue sister nations in the Commonwealth with the Crown acting as a tie of common citizenship between us.
"Oh Canada, my home and native land. . ." You are a lucky guy -- this huge country with every resource imaginable -- a good medical system --a tradition of taking care of people who need it -- a decent, low-keyed country with room for everyone. I am so proud that we are associated with your great country through history, the Commonwealth and common blood.Watch out or you wind up art of the USA. I am not mad about The Queen. I just think it's a useful institution that works, politically.
The Queen is the symbol of the nation. Every state indulges in pomp and circumstance for its chief of state to dramatize its greatness on national occasions. Why not have a focus for these ceremonies who has the grace and elegance of a Elizabeth II? The Royal family ARE ordinary people -- who do the work royal families do and try to do it well!
She is a bit removed from Canada, and as she gets older, there is the danger than Canadians will begin to feel she is too removed. That's why I hope she will retire soon.
Elizabeth is descended from the kings of antiquity. So might you be if we could trace it. But in the here and now, she is our Queen, and she has served us in this capacity for nearly 60 years. Some of us have sworn loyalty to her and her heir by law established.
If it works don't fix it, and I think it works very well.
charlesmillton - I think it is healthy to keep the "authority" of Chief of State out of the hands of politician and keep the levers of government out of the hands of Chiefs of State. The trouble with the US is that the President is responsible for policy and is the symbol of the nation. How can citizens boo him for his former performance and not insult him and the ntion for the latter? I lament the efforts of repeated PM's to become UK
Pakistan because a republic shortly after this -- cutting free of Elizabeth II -- so-called "full independence". And what did it bring Pakistan? One military dictator after another; a military that controls the economy and is totally out of countrol -- such vast and embedded corruption one has no idea of how it can ever be stopped.
My point is that say what you want, the nations of which Elizabeth II is chief of state are democratic; the people, free; and corruption is reasonably under control.
I really hope you aren't implying that having a monarch is any way to run a modern country. I get it, the Queen is the symbol of England, and that's fine. But to try to tie her into the success of "her" nations is ludicrous.
@Kloborgg It's not the present queen that is the underlying cause of her countries successes, it's the system. You check out what's become of former colonies, and of former monarchies. All the countries of the former Yogoslavia have been plungend into wars, poverty, bad government and corruption. Want to know first hand basis: Mexico. Mexico has a huge and very corrupt bureaucracy. Democracy is a fantasy here.
@Kloborgg The Queen doesn't "run" the country. And nations are not corporations. All people need something greater than themselves to look up to and worship (not in a religious sense) ; they must be able to touch the secular equivalent of "divine" here on earth. This deeply human trait effectively rules out all politicians. And it's remarkable that the perception of constitutional monarchy as being "less worse" than the alternatives is gaining more currency than ever before in modern times.

Unthinkable nowadays of course (and rightly so).
