Great music, great conductor, great orchestra, great recording-a vid you should enjoy on a winter evening with a good glass of red wine-so much thanks for posting!
If ever I find myself on the eve of battle in the serivice of Great Britain. One playthrough of this song would fill me with the strength of 1,000 men, the courage of a fierce Lion, and the pride of lady Britannia herself...
Just as Sir malcolm has the definative recording of Handels messiah with the RLPO, the definative recording of Nimrod surely has to be Sir Adrian Boult with the London Philharmonic. The climax Boult brings to the piece has NEVER been equalled by any other conductor. His recording with the LSO is harsh and much much less warm than the LPO
@scabycat Ardian Boult recorded this work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1936), the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1954 and 1962) and the London Symphony Orchestra (1971) I assume you are referring to the 1962 recording made for World Record Club and subsequently re-issued on Classics for Pleasure . Beulah plans to release the 1936 recording this summer.
It sends chills down my spine, it is so beautiful. The dynamics take your breath away! Wow, so that is what it means to be a true musician... I am proud to have English decent, all of a sudden! Terrific! Très beau!
Brings a tear to your eye and a lump to your throat and makes you feel proud to be British! Will have to play this before going into God Save the Queen next gig, perhaps.

Sorry Sir Adrian, but this recording by Sargent is the ultimate for me.
This is the true Nimrod.

Sorry, Sir Adrian, but this recording by Sargent is still the ultimate for me. This is the real Nimrod.

@A60stock It is the 1962 recording with the LPO that I am reffering to. But u have not said which in your opinion is the definative recording?
scabycat 11 months ago
@scabycat I don''t have a preference for any one recording. The variety in this music is reflected by the variety of performances available.

Can you imagine having a friend who thinks so much of you this is his musical interpretation of you.
Blessed is the man who can fill the fingers of one hand with true friends.

This should be the National Anthem, not God Save the Queen....

I Know where your coming from and it is lovely but National Anthems should be more rousing. Jerusalam fits the bill for me

I Vow to Thee My Country should be our national anthem... although this is probably my all time favourite piece of music.
