  • Go Pre --- he was known as "The Intimidator" on the campus of U. of Oregon

  • @raysweater This is a 3mile race; not 5,000m. I would suggest correcting the title. Thanks for the footage!

  • I grew up in Coos Bay, Oregon, same as Pre. I can still remember seeing him often when he was doing his practice runs, when I was a boy. It's really hard to communicate the buzz and aura surrounding Coos Bay, and Eugene during that time. It was the heyday of Eugene (where the University of Oregon is located) being called "Track Town U.S.A.".

  • my hero

  • he was the best and there was someone else almost as good.Do anyone remember Eric Reynolds he ran 8:09 in the 3000 meter one second slower than Steve and also ran 8:44 in the 2 miles 3 second slower

  • I hear sound...of my heartbeat...

  • 13:06 for 3 miles = 13:28 for 5,000m

  • @4241600m No it isnt thats like saying they run the extra 200m in 22 seconds which noone can do after running 3 brutal miles. I is more like 13:35

  • @467076 1 mile = 1,609 meters (they were running on a 440yd track back then, so yes they were running the full 3-mile). 1,609 * 3 = 4827 meters. He had 183 meters to go. At 15 seconds per 100m, he would have been 27 seconds for the last 183 meters, but he was kicking so it was more like 14 seconds per 100m which would have been 25 seconds for the last 183 meters for full 5,000m. Ok, i was wrong, but you aren't right either.

  • @467076 ah, I was off a bit in my calculation. 5,000m - 4827 = 173 meters. So, he didn't even have as far to go for the full 5k making his time about a second or 2 faster. haha, 13:22-13:23 stands!!!

  • @4241600m No no no it wouldnt have been that fast.

  • look at the scoreboard at 1:38; it says it was only a 3 mile race. still amazing though; especially for such a young runner

  • The man runs like Jack Sparrow!

  • This had to have been a 3 mile race and not a 5000 meter race because the world record for 5000 meters in 1978 was 13:08 by Henry Rono, three years after Prefontaine passed away. Still an incredibly fast time though.

  • boy, he looked a touch skinnier there than i remember him, but i was a kid then.

  • 13:05 in college? Damn.

  • there is something appropriately beautiful and haunting about the absence of sound here..

  • @herbplummer truly is.

  • @voted4bush-I just cannot take anyone seriously who voted for bush. And then advertising to the world? Even after bush showed himself as the idiot he is during his presidency? Wow. You must have some serious problems. And by the way, if you respond to this, I won't even see your response. I will not look for it because you obviously don't deserve my attention.

  • Even though there's no audio, you really don't need it with Pre... I can still easily imagine the crowd chanting "Pre! Pre! Pre!" in that last lap..

  • ive been to his shrine in eugene where his car flipped. its really a cool place. people put their track spikes and medals around his picture. its awesome

  • Go Pre =D GoSEAN.org ... and that's Nick Rose of Western Kentucky going to the lead and on Pre's shoulder during the race.

  • Thanks for all of the comments, guys. I can't remember how I obtained this footage but I felt like I needed to share it with everyone. Also, they were recorded with no sound, so don't hate me for that. Glad you guys enjoy it.

  • lol@ the previous record and then pre's time

  • you're crazy pre

  • yeah, its the 3 mile, not 5000

  • yiftertheshifter1 suck my big, hairy, african, veiny, triumphant, dick u shitfuck

  • Uh... no thanks...

  • Pre ran this in 13:05, I thought his trials was a time of 13:22?

  • It must have been 3 miles rather than a 5000m. Pre's 5000m best was 13:21.8; his best 3 mile is 12:51.x

  • @BrianBaldino1 That was a 5k. This is a 3mile.

  • He had such a smooth style to his stride, he really was a champion.

  • On the contrary, Pre wasn't the most efficient runner, but compensated that with how quickly blood pumped to his muscles.

  • hell yeah ted!

  • Yeah. It's a 3 mile, not a 5k, but that was still a very good race.

  • hey stupid a 5k is the same as a three mile race!

  • Actually they're not. A 3 mile race is around 4828 meters in length, meaning it is shorter than a 5k by about 172 meters, which in turn can add at least 30 more seconds to the time.

  • @dude158585 lol you're a dumb ass. A 5k is 200m longer then a 3 mile race. Get your facts straight before you call people stupid.

  • @extremerunner i think its 171yds more the 5k. usually you add 27 sec to whatever 3 mile time to get an idea of how fast ones 5000m time would be.

  • @extremerunner Maybe you shouldn't go around calling people "...dumb ass..." considering 3 miles is 4828m which isn't 200m shorter than a 5000m (1600m is not a mile). C'mon man, it is so easy to look these things up.

  • @voted4bush I was getting at the point that a 5k isnt the same as a 3 mile race. You're just one of those perfectionist douche bags who thinks they know everything. Just look at your name... voted4bush. that right there shows how unintelligent you are.

  • @extremerunner Nah, you're just grumpy and need to relax. "...unintelligent..."? Really? That's why I'm well on my way to a doctorate right? LOL, you're an assumption maniac. "he's a republican/conservative which means he's a redneck dumb ass (your favorite term apparently)" It appears you have an arrogance problem and can't just admit, "True, it isn't quite 200m and I was probably over stepping my bounds by calling a complete stranger a '...dumb ass...'." But, you had to be a fool.

  • crazy vid man.. PRE LIVES!!!!!

  • This was a 3 mile not a 5k. If those were 5k times that'd be insane for ncaa back then.

  • That's brutally fast! Especially for someone so young!

  • he revolutionized the sport of cross country running

  • @crazydeaf9 How?

  • also the other competitors all broke the ncaa record that day [ncaa championships] i say that must be one of the greatest raceas all time

  • pre rules but do any of u have seen a vid of him running his whole victory lap?

  • Pre is the man. It would have been great to run against him. Just to see this video was amazing. By the way does anyone know about other videos that are not on youtube? Like the videos of him in the nike commercials.

  • fast 3 mile time

  • This race was televised live on Wide World of Sports - it was brutally hot at 4 pm for the live east coast feed. I remember them watering down the track prior to the start and the steam rising. Under these oppressive conditions, Pre smashed the NCAA 3 mile record which he set just two days earlier in the trial heat. He was a great competitor and role model. I was the guy leading the race early with the AU shirt, and I never saw this footage before. It brought back good memories. Thanks.

  • @0673au that's spectacular that you were able to compete against PRE along with the others

  • Good Video but someone could ad a sweet tune to make it even more epic

    Go Pre!!

  • pre lives

  • Pre's best 5000 was 13:21.9 in 1974 at age 23

  • 1973 ncaa championships, Baton Rouge La. Pre smashed his own ncaa 3mile record by 13 seconds for his fourth consecutive championship. 13:05.3

  • one little mistake. The race is 3 miles and NOT 5000 meters. Pre's 3 mile time of 13:05 would equate to about 13:31 for a 5k. I believe Pre ran 13:22 (5k) later.

  • Fascinating film. Thank you for posting it. :-)
