I read this book because of your reading. I have to say it wasn't what I was expecting. One of the most captivating and well thought out books I've ever read. Great character development. And it was so heart breaking! I couldn't sleep until I finished the last 4 chapters; and then I really couldn't sleep. "If only it could have worked out this way!" I kept saying to myself. While, it was disturbing at times - just thanks for making sure I read such classic literature.
At the risk of being thought partisan I think this book must be required reading for the people who run the republican party. They have Newspeak down pat. Peace is war, freedom is close moral supervision and repression and democracy means one dollar one vote.
Wow, he's such a good writer. When I read this back in the day as a kid I was too busy thinking about his depiction of totalitarianism to see how well-written it is.
@scifiwritir Yes, people focus too much on the totalitarianism, and yet this book is so much more than that. Its a social observation applicable to any time period, and certainly our own. Its also a contemplation of our emotions and memories, which strikes truer to the heart than anything I've ever read.
Do you know if Orwell made any other books that were on such a personal level? What I love most about this book is how sentimental it is, and how captivating are the characters.
@ZechsMerquise73 My favourite book by Orwell was "Down and Out in Paris and London" - which was about his personal experiences, exactly as the title says.
There's another about a young man who gives up a literary career to work in advertising because of the financial burden of wife and family - it's called "Keep the Aspidistra Flying".
I'm sorry, who is the narrator?

Creepy how the place where they torture people is called the Ministry of Love.

@ScotlandSerenity or maybe i already is. not in total but in moderation.
War is peace
freedom is slavery
ignorance is strength
sounds like current times to me.

I believe saying "totalitarianism" on YouTube automatically puts your comment into an evaluation queue. That's ironic.

Most timely and ironic given the media. (Your prose reading may even surpass your beautiful poetic renditions....) Thank you.
