i stopped reading TOI in 1998 when i was in class 8 because of the extensive coverage of bill clinton monica lewinsky scandal by TOI which is hugely embarrassing for me then.
i hated the times of india since i was in my 12th standard. i had no interest in reading news then..but even then i knew that this newspaper sucked big time. hindustan times was much better.

Both have their customer base, and I don't find any thing wrong. TOI is for time pass (surely it will excite you, with contents to any extent). Whereas, The Hindu is just for serious readers and those aim for competitive exams... When I was small I used to read lot of science/art related articles on Hindu... When I grew up I got addicted to TOI - thanks to its junk contents which generally attract masses, the reason why it is the most read newspaper in India. :(
Actually the Chennai edition of TOI can be called not Times of India but Gay Times of India, because on a an average they cover Gay news 20% of a week. So that answers the questions especially which one is best at least in Chennai :)

You may call The Hindu controversial to a certain extent... but The Times of India and Hindustan Times have lost all their credibility-they don't even have a proper editorial and Op-Ed page. So In the comments section of articles in TOI, a lot of people type comments indicating the errors and asking for them to be corrected. And they get abusive comments as replies. I think TOI encourages abuse, and that they have employees who passionately abuse people pointing out mistakes. No reader would love a newspaper so much.

@mesir3: I live in Delhi, and I know a lot of people who read Times of India and Hindustan Times just for their Page 3 supplements - Delhi Times and HT City. This ad is staged, of course, but I know many ToI and HT readers who are worse than those shown here.
I read Times of India and I knew all the answers except the pet name of Hrithik Roshan. TOI is a good news paper if you just want to know the news (and are not interested in the critical analysis of a subject). IMO TOI has better coverage but Hindu has more depth.
@kunaltiss because most of them in mumbai are only interested in knowing things like saif's birthday present to kareena, etc. Times of India, bombay mirror has a very very large base in Mumbai. It is very difficult to compete in such an environment.
Simply Awesome Ad. I read Hindu for the last 30 years. My grandfather and my uncle all used to work with Hindu. I have my uncle often mention how Hindu was so technologically advanced even in 80s. The quality of content and the neat English is still unmatched. I owe Hindu a lot for my vocabulary and general knowledge. A lot of youngsters today have no newspaper reading habit or read garbage like TOI. Hats of to Hindu for bringing out such a fitting ad response to its competitors.

No guys, I read both the Hindu AND TOI. I must say, even though the Hindu is a trifle left-leaning, it is far better than TOI. TOI gives us the news, but its nature is sensationalist, while the Hindu is far more serious. Needless to say, I would prefer it if the Hindu did start admitting other points of view in all its publications.

Having tried out all major dailies - for me the combination of Times of India and The Tribune works best. Times of India provides me with the daily news and The Tribune with the diverse perspectives and opinions.

Hindu is the Best newspaper in our country, it covers genuine national issues and give adequate space to real issues and news. Its analysis and editorials are world class. Unlike other newspapers (which give 80% of their space to cricket, bollywood and ads) it doesnt contain cheap and masaledar news. Hindu newspaper is the symbole of true journalism. Hindu is not only appreciated in india for its quality but it is appreciated world wide.

Both have their customer base, and I don't find any thing wrong. TOI is for time pass (surely it will excite you, with contents to any extent). Whereas, The Hindu is just for serious readers and those aim for competitive exams... When I was small I used to read lot of science/art related articles on Hindu... When I grew up I got addicted to TOI - thanks to its junk contents which generally attract masses, the reason why it is the most read newspaper in India. :(

You may call The Hindu controversial to a certain extent... but The Times of India and Hindustan Times have lost all their credibility-they don't even have a proper editorial and Op-Ed page. And if there are typos and other errors (happens often in TOI - I wonder if they employ a proof reader who knows English). So In the comments section of articles in TOI, a lot of people type comments indicating the errors and asking for them to be corrected. And they get abusive comments as replies. I think TOI encourages abuse, and that they have employees who passionately abuse people pointing out mistakes. No reader would love a newspaper so much.

I read Times of India and I knew all the answers except the pet name of Hrithik Roshan. TOI is a good news paper if you just want to know the news (and are not interested in the critical analysis of a subject). IMO TOI has better coverage but Hindu has more depth.

Simply Awesome Ad. I read Hindu for the last 30 years. My grandfather and my uncle all used to work with Hindu. I have my uncle often mention how Hindu was so technologically advanced even in 80s. The quality of content and the neat English is still unmatched. I owe Hindu a lot for my vocabulary and general knowledge. A lot of youngsters today have no newspaper reading habit or read garbage like TOI. Hats of to Hindu for bringing out such a fitting ad response to its competitors.

No guys, I read both the Hindu AND TOI. I must say, even though the Hindu is a trifle left-leaning, it is far better than TOI. TOI gives us the news, but its nature is sensationalist, while the Hindu is far more serious. Needless to say, I would prefer it if the Hindu did start admitting other points of view in all its publications.

If you are talking about Op-Ed, they are point of view of different people and even there if you consider on a long term basis, it does eventually gets balanced. But I am happy atleast you have read it. And yes, anyone can answer these questions correctly, point Hindu was trying to make was how low is the level of content and how much they sensationalize stuff instead of remaining unbiased.

Having tried out all major dailies - for me the combination of Times of India and The Tribune works best. Times of India provides me with the daily news and The Tribune with the diverse perspectives and opinions.

Hindu is the Best newspaper in our country, it covers genuine national issues and give adequate space to real issues and news. Its analysis and editorials are world class. Unlike other newspapers (which give 80% of their space to cricket, bollywood and ads) it doesnt contain cheap and masaledar news. Hindu newspaper is the symbole of true journalism. Hindu is not only appreciated in india for its quality but it is appreciated world wide.
