heard this song for the first time in 81? high school days. Until now Still my top 5 greatest songs ever written for me. The melody,lyrics,arrangements,vocals....super tune...
@MrSteveEllis: Do you really think so? I both 'lived' with it in New York when it came out, and have it on the awesome DVD from the stunning concert in Tokyo -83, and this seems much later than that. Please all who upload: Do give as much info you can! Musicians, when & where.
The lady in the white is Josie James and the lady in the black is Lynn Davis.....Both phenominal backing vocalists and George Duke uses them as often as he can, they are on a bunch of his live/studio recordings.
@sinchronicity Yeah, I've noticed that too! I've always enjoyed hearing his falsetto register in his singing. I guess the older he gets, the more likely he seems to refrain from hitting 'em notes. On his "In A Mellow Tone" CD, he did a more laid-back version of the same song in the same key, but he basically used the deeper, more natural octave. Check out "Brazilian Love Affair" - the live 2003 version (if the video is still on Youtube) - I guess age is a factor - you gotta love him!!!
song came out when I was a senior in high school and at the time I thought that love would last forever....what did I know...but the song still sounds good and I like this version.. wish I could have seen it live...as for the comments....it is true, but once in awhile. someone comes along that defies the odds/marketers and sticks....thanks for posting.
Even though this isn't my type of music, (I'm a jazz musician) I felt obliged to put my two cents in,as to why songs aren't like this any more. See below.
Reason #1: It doesn't pay. They can put out pure crap music, in a factory. Every "artist" is instantly replaceable, and there are hardly any whose career lasts more than a few months. Then it's on to the next flavor. The "artist" no longer has to have any talent, for that matter. They can hook his voice up to pitch correction software and, voila, he's on pitch, every time. (Oh, and that synthesized sound to their voice is rather trendy, dontcha know?)
#2: The vast majority of Americans have no listening skills. Music has become something that accompanies images on a TV screen. We have lost our attention span, and no longer appreciate music simply for what it is. We don't know how to dim the lights, close our eyes and just listen any more. If we did, 99% of today's pop music would be in the trash. Record exec's have discovered that the best way to market a song, is to make the song short enough to be encapsulated onto a ring tone!
The way to change all this? Well.. vote. Vote with your dollars. Think analytically about the music you purchase as carefully as you think about the food you buy, and the clothes you wear, and demand quality. No matter what kind of music it is. Just my thoughts.. sorry for the rant.
It makes sense, I agree. Just hate the fact that these type of tunes just don't hit the soundwaves anymore. Thank god for youtube...bands like Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool and The Gang, Brick, Midnight Star-they had talent. Look at their videos, nothing fancy at all, but the sound and words meant something.
I totally agree whit everything you say. Just to add that situation is same in Europe too, probably in whole world. Marketing destroying art. Real problem is that new generations doesn't understand real art. That could lead to much worse problems... Sad.
art is music and freedom to play as you feel i think this is a soulful version ,i love it dukes voice his solo. i drove accross country wuth my 8 trak, and this was one of em thanks gd

This is a Beautiful Song! I was only 10 yrs old growing up in GUAM when I first heard this song. This song brings back good memories growing up in Island
reminds me of my childhood... when life was all good. is it just me, or did anyone else notice Carl about to pass out twice at 8:07 & 8:25? what was wrong with him?
True, but this IS a project with a keyboardist/singer who'd really be considered the frontman. Though this bass playing would probably trump most others, so it's not as if he's downgraded the quality, just made the playing more fitting to non-instrumental music.
I know what you're saying, but you'd expect anybody hiring Stanley to want him to perform a solo at some point, or at least sing he's barely even visible in this performance. I mean it's like hiring Eric Clapton to play rhythm guitar on your record without asking him to solo - you may as well just ask a session musician like Daryll Stuermer.
The good old days. Notice the piano sound from the Roland MKS-20 synth module layered with the DX7 e.piano. Love the 80's the times of the first digital synths. Of course I own an mks-20 myself too :D Btw. the sunglasses is so dead wrong! :D
This song is so smooth. It is difficult to believe that Epic Records didn't want to release this as a single . They felt it was a too white (whatever that means). The pop department said George and Stanley were black artists with a white record and that they didn't have the time to promote this record at pop radio.

No, it's not his strongest vocal effort, but live shows can be that way sometimes. The song itself is timeless. There is no music today that can rival old school classics like this. I am deeply moved each time I hear this.
Growing up I used to give instrumentalist a hard time :they never sing lovesongs. But then an older DJ friend of mine pull this Duke & CLARKE out ,with this classic on it . Man i was sold.
when youre as accomplished as george..the voice doesnt seem to matter anymore,i mean..theres nothing more for him to prove..he is a legend and it would be a privilege to see a true musician like him perform..

I'm aware of that, but the bassist here doesn't sound like Stanley.

Sounds like it to me...
The slapping tone sounds like his usual Alembic bass.
Could be using a dfferent model played through the same rig, but sounds like him to me..

Again, I'm not on about the bass he's playing, but the style - it's unusual to here Stanley play rhythm without any lead parts at all.
