Since you give out so much info, thought I'd share a little on cutting steel.
@undertake782 OH BOY!, GREAT QUESTION. MAGNETS ARE EXPENSIVE, SO INDUCTION GENERATORS ARE CHEAPER TO MAKE. AND THE CAR ALTERNATOR USES ELECTRICITY FROM THE BATTERY TO GENERATE THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS TO SUBSTITUTE FOR MAGNETS. VERY INEFFICIENT. BUT THAT IS THE OIL GAME. IT DOESNT MATTER TO THE AUTO MAKERS THAT YOU USE 19 HORSEPOWER TO MAKE 1 HORSEPOWER(746 WATTS). OR A 15 PH ENGINE TO PRODUCE 3,500 WATTS ON A HOME GENNY. AS LONG AS IT USES GAS, OR OIL. THAT'S THE OIL GAME.
@undertake782 ALSO SECOND PART... IT ALSO DOESNT MATTER THAT THE COMMERCIAL WIND TURBINES WITH 4 TO 4.5 FOOT PROPS FOR HOME USE, CAN ONLY PRODUCE THE RATED 1.6 KW IN A 36 MPH WIND, OR 200 WATTS IN 18 MPH, OR 25 IN A 9 MPH WIND. AS LONG AS THEY GET YOUR MONEY.
ALWAYS LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE PROP FOR YOUR POWER COLLECTION ABILITY. DOUBLE THE WIND = 8 TIMES THE POWER. DOUBLE THE PROP DIAMETER = 4 TIMES THE POWER. DOUBLE BOTH AND GET 32 TIMES THE POWER. IMAGINE THAT!..& IRON CORE,& NO MAGs, 4GET IT.
@peppino66castro YES SO FAR JOE. WEATHER AND WORK, AND EMERGENCY FIXES HAVE KEPT ME FROM THE BUILD. THEN A FRIEND PILED A BUNCH OF PLYWOOD SCRAPS ON TOP OF IT, AND PROCEEDED TO UNLOAD THE REST OF THE TRAILER ON THAT. THE PILE STRETCHED FOR 15 FEET. WHEN I GOT HOME IT STARTED RAINING FOR 2 DAYS. @muddymuddymuddmann G'day Scotty... Yeah, a Time Machìne would be useful for that. For 40 years the Techno. advances & inflation balanced, so 1 hour of 1 Mil.Jet Engine = 1 Lb to Low Orbit. But then Computers arrived. Now, it's a tenth of a percent of the Purchase Price/Hour aloft. So the $10,000 Ultralight is $10, & a $37Million F-35 is $616.66 c.... per Minute, to switch it on. hi. me again i found a site in england that has the magnets wow the price is true the roof F648 - 50 x 25 x 10mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 25kg Pull (x1) (D17/O) £3.33.00 witch is over 400 euros wood this price be right? i can get all other parts for 100 euro brake pads an stuff not the copper wire. you said 2" by 1" by half " so will them magnets do??? see i have 1 video up its a games room i build an want to get free elec in it to work a van heater. ?

@muddymuddymuddmann G'day... Yeah, I thìnk I've heard of that one. The twist in the tail is that the Elite didn't get around to Building the Moon Base, let alone Colonise Asteroids, or Moons around the nearest Gas-Giant..! They flew 8-Engined Jetbombers, 578 of them, for 100,000 Hours each ; at $10,000 per hour, per engine... When 1 Pound to Low-Orbit was $10,000. If the US Dept. Def. had lost 1/2 it's Budget to NASA... They could've had 182 Moonshots, in 1969 alone !
@muddymuddymuddmann G'day Scotty, Yeah, the Helionaut's View of Life isn't often considered. But, imagine y're on a "Generation Starship". The Air & Food & Water Recyclers, & the Powerplant, are Fully Automatic... Now, what if some of the Crew go mad & decide to chop down the Air-Recyclers, to burn the Food & Water Recyclers, after they dig THEM up ; to melt down & make Jewelery, to sell to each other, so as to "get rich" ? Pity, it's NOT a Science Fiction Plot.
@WarblesOnALot NOT A SCIENCE FRICTION MOVIE AT ALL. IT KINDA REMINDS ME OF THE ONE WHERE THE LONG HEADS TOOK OVER THE SHIP, AND DISGUISED THEM SELVES AS THE SHIPS ELITE CREW, AND THEY DID ALL THAT STUFF TOO, AND TRICKED THE CREW INTO TEARING THE OLD SYSTEM UP FOR THEM, WITH THE PROMISE OF THE INSTALLATION OF NEW AND BETTER UNITS. BUT WHEN THE TEAR DOWN WAS DONE, THEY JUST LEFT IN ANOTHER SHIP, LEAVING THE POPULATION FOR A SLOW DEATH. CALLED,
Happy late Bday, enjoyed your construction vids. Can you help me understand how much electricity you expect to get out of your turbine? I am reading about turbines and looking into what it would take to construct a 10KWh VAWT turbine. I don't even know if it is possible or how much it would cost. To buy one from a manufacturer is usually around $24,000 +. What part of the turbine would you say dictates the KWh ratings?
THIS ONE SHOULD DO ABOUT 850 IN A 20 MPH WIND. THE DIAMETER OF THE PROP DICTATES THE AMOUNT OF POWER AVAIABLE FORM THE WIND. WHEN THE WIND DOUBLES IN SPEED, THE POWER FACTOR GOES UP BY 8 TIMES. AND WHEN THE PROP SIZE IS DOUBLED, THE POWER FACTOR GOES UP BY 4 TIMES. SO IF BOTH ARE DOUBLED THERE IS 32 TIMES THE POWER AVAILABLE. THE TRICK IS MATCHING THE RRPMs OF A CERTAIN SIZED PROP TO THE ALTERNATORS' VOLTAGE OUTPUT AND POWER CAPABILLITIES.
@muddymuddymuddmann YAY TEAM !!! Congratulations on 50 Trips, around the nearest Star, you Veteran Helionaut ! I got there in February, m'self... Keep on keeping on, & try not to Party too Hearty...! Have a good one Scotty.
@WarblesOnALot THANKS CHRISS, THIS MAKES THE 50th CELEBRATION OF FALLING OUT OF THE WARM SECURE PLACE I STARTED AT. I DO FEEL BETTER KNOWING THAT I AM A VETERAN HELIONAUT THOUGH. THANKS FOR THE GREAT NEW REALIZATION OF MY NEW TITLE AND STATUS. IT REMINDS ME OF HOW I FELT WHEN THE HUGE SPACE ROCK HIT JUPITER. THEY SAID THAT JUPITER WOULD PROBABLY BLOW UP OR SOMETHING. , BUT WHEN IT HIT THE SURFACE, IT WAS LIKE A MOSQUITO HAD LANDED. AND I SAID,"SEE..YOU CANT MESS WITH A SAGITARIAN". WWEE TUFF!
@muddymuddymuddmann G'morning... Um, no, I never heard of curing Bamboo with Heat... I imagine it'd have to be fairly mild ? Anything over boiling would maybe blow the Compartments, from Interior Moisture turning to Steam ? I think a problem was spontaneous splitting, so lots of reinforcement- binding had to be done. By WW1 they'd moved on to Laminated hollow Wooden Spars, with bindings. (Kiwi) Peter Jackson built a Replica FE-2b, & it's tailbooms are Wood.
@Muddymuddymuddmann Egad ! Never done Richard Bach ? What about Jonothon Livingstone Seagull, Gift Of Wings, Biplane, Stranger To The Ground, Illusions, The Ring Around Forever, & No Such Place As Far Away...? You missed them all??! Wow. Rainy Day Reading list, maybe ? Um, Early Rogallo Ski-Kites were Bamboo. And Pre WW1 it was popular. Alberto Santos Dumont's Demoiselle used Bamboo. It doesn't deal well with time & vibration & UV... Good for a while.
@WarblesOnALot I DIDNT KNOW HIS NAME WAS RICHARD BACH. COOL ON THE BAMBOO. I BET YOU KNOW HOW TO CURE IT. I HEARD ABOUT HEATING IT, BUT NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH HEAT WAS TO BE USED OR FOR HOW LONG. OR HOW TO KNOW WHEN IT'S DONE.
@muddymuddymuddmann Hi Scotty... Yeah, Richard Bach has a good way of explaining Spiritual stuff, in a so it appeals to Techno-headed Atheists (which I was when I first read his stuff). His books saved me the need to fly Heavy Metal, I went straight to WW1 Replicas & Ultralights ; after "Gift Of Wings" in High School. By the time that "Illusions" came out I was Barnstorming in a Chopper ! So I'm almost a "Bach-ist", but he burnt a LOT of fuel...
@muddymuddymuddmann Yeah... That sounds like what's in "The Messiahs' Handbook, Reminders For The Advanced Soul",( exerpts of which may be found in "Illusions" by Richard Bach.)... 'There is No Such Thing as A Problem, without a Gift for You in it's Hands... You Seek Problems, because you Need Their Gifts...!" or, "What the Caterpillar calls The End Of The World, the IS calls a Butterfly !"... The latter is how I try to view the imminent Global Contraction !
AND WE ALL THINK WE SEARCH FOR GIFTS, AND JUST GET PROBLEMS. BUT THE SEEKING OF PROBLEMS FOR THEIR GIFTS SEEMS TO RING MORE TRUE. A MAN THAT COMPLAINS ABOUT BEING RIPPED OFF, IS ADVERTISING AN EASY JOB TO THE RIP OFF MAN. AFTER A WHILE HE LEARNS, AND LOOKS BACK AT THE LESSON LEARNED. AND VALUES THE GIFT, BUT NOT THE PRICE PAID.
I ALSO SEE THE ATTRACTION TO THE OLDER WAYS OF LIVING. VANITY IS ROT.
@muddymuddmuddmann Cool, I'll have a look into it., though the Lightning didn't hit the tower, just went close overhead. And the Diodes were way too small. My son was out by an order of Magnitude, about them. And he led me astray...(!). Which doesn't often happen, these days ; so I suppose I should savour it as an equaliser for next time he tells me how Old I am ! It just means that I should've double-checked, so Re-doing it is a fair Pennance !
@WarblesOnALot THAT'S THE SPIRIT, NEVER REFRET WHAT YOU HAVE TO LEARN. TO EVERY LESSON THERE IS A PRICE. THE MORE OF A PRICE YOU PAY, THE BETTER YOU LEARN THE LESSON. THE PROBLEM WITH MOST OF THE WORLD IS, THEY NEVER LEARN. AND THE REASON S ARE ALL OBVIOUS. THOSE THAT HAVE LEARNED THE LESSONS, CAN ONLY FEEL SORRY FOR THE ONES THAT WON'T. IF THE ONES THAT WON'T, WOULD LEARN THEM, THEN THEY WOULD HAVE ALREADY, AND YOU WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE TO TRY TO GET IT ACROSS TO THEM.
@muddymuddymuddmann Yeah, its an irritation... But I am happy to have worked it out. The Bolt was close enough that the sheetmetal of the Hut went "KLICK !", almost half a second before the "BOOM !", so at 1000 Ft/Sec, it wasn't far above... And something went awry in the Spare Regulator I'd been using, too, it was feeding 0.4 Amp back into the Panels at Dawn....! Twice in a fortnight, and even I put it together. The answer is, bigger Diodes I guess. Hard to build against Lightning !
@WarblesOnALot TRY A SPARK GAP LIGHTNING ARRESTOR. THE DONT COST MORE THAN A HAMBURGER TO BUILD. AND IF YOU USE A FINE THREADED SCREW, YOU CAN ADJUST THEM TO A FINE GAP FOR LOWER VOLTAGE SPIKES.
gday scotty ron here again yes the LENZ TURBINE would be the best love to see how one is made to produce between 2-5 kws that wood burning stirling genny sounds very interesting will there be video's on that cheers
@ronnie8991 OH YA, MOST DEFINITELY. IVE BEEN WAITING TO DO THAT STIRLING ENGINE FOR A WHILE NOW. THE FLYWHEEL WILL BE AN AXIAL FLUX DESIGNED ALTERNATOR AND A CAR WHEEL. THE TARGET CHARGING VOLTAGE RPMs WILL BE 1/2 OF THE STIRLING ENGINES NO LOAD RPMs. THAT'S THE COOL THING ABOUT STIRLING ENGINES. WHEN YOU PUT A LOAD TO THEM, THEY GET A BIT STRONGER. THE HEAT HAS MORE TIME TO TRANSFER, AND THE TEMPERATURES MAKE MORE EXPANSION PRESSURES AND VACUUMS, THUS MORE TORQUE WITHOUT MUCH EFFICIENCY LOSSES.
@muddymuddymuddmann G'day... Well, yeah. My T.O.P. fried the diodes on the replacement Gallium PV's, last night. The "Automotive Blocking Diodes" I'd been told were 10 Amp, turned out to be 1 Amp... But , like the 6 Amp set that worked OK until a fortnight ago, they were OK for daytime. Last night, Lightning at 500 Ft put PV current from the Flash ! against the Induced Current in the wires from the EMP of the Lightning. So, 1/4 Power till I get new Diodes fitted...
@WarblesOnALot MAN THAT'S A SHAME CHRIS. GOD SPEED ON THE FIX. IT'S GOOD TO HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND KNOW THE FIX. SO I GUESS IT'S STILL A PRETTY GOOD DAY. MUDDy
@Neslakim YA BOOMER PICKED A GOOD SPOT FOR CUTTING WITH A TORTCH HUH? I WAS TRYING TO HOLD THE CAMERA STILL, BUT THE FIRES KEPT GETTING THE BEST OF MY ATTENTION. I WAS PUTTING THE GRASS OUT AND HOLDING THE CAMERA STEADY QUITE WELL AT FIRST, BUT IT FINALY GOT HARDER AS THE FIRES GOT FARTHER FROM ME. LOL. LOTS OF FUN.
@muddymuddymuddmann G'day... Well Done Scotty. Good stuff ! Um, Ronnie, as a bit of Reality Awareness Therapy, work out how many Kw-Hrs you use, daily. In Oz it's 25-50. Then work out the cost of owning a pair of Big (10 KvA) Piston Generators, & running them, alternately, 24/24 to compete with the Dreaded Coal Grid. You'll be AMAZED how Cheap the Coal-Juice is sold... Vs $70,000 for a 20 Kw Solar Stand-Alone System. Y'see
@WarblesOnALot YA 25 CENTS PER KWHOUR IS QUITE EXPENSIVE. 13 CENTS HERE. BUT STILL THE STAND ALONE PETROL GENERATORS OR JUST ABOUT ANYOTHER HOME GENERATORS CAN BREAK YOU FAST. THE WIND IS FREE BUT NOT ALWAYS AROUND. THE SUN IS FREE BUT IT IS ONLY AROUND LESS THAN 50% OF THE TIME. TOGETHER WIND AND SOLAR HOLD EACH OTHERS GAPS PRETTY WELL. THEN IT'S THE HOME GENNYS' TURN FOR THE SMALL GAPS LEFT OVER. I HOPE TO HAVE MY HUGE STIRLING WOOD BURNER GENNY RUNNING BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR. A SWEET DREAM.
@photolodge YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO KNOW. BUT IF I SELL THIS ONE, IT MIGHT HAVE TO GO TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. IT'S A YOU TUBE STAR YOU KNOW. LOL. I HEARD A GUY SOLD A PEN THAT HE SHOWED ON YOU TUBE FOR 800 DOLLARS. BUT WITH ME,IF I SOLD MY SPECIAL HAT WITH THE READING GLASSES ON IT, I JUST MIGHT GET A WHOPPING 25 CENTS FOR IT. LOL.
you don't know how lucky you are that block didnt explode. :) cement and high heat = boom. other then that keep your torch tip farther away so your pre heat works better. still better then 90% of what i see day in day out.. p.s nice welds man WAY better then some of your pervious stuff :)
@satan31337 HEY THAT SOUNDS KINDA IRONIC. BOOMERS' BIG BOOM. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE BLOCK AFTER HE WAS DONE, IT SURE LOOKED LIKE HE MELTED IT A BIT. THANKS FOR THE WELDING COMPLIMENTS. AND THE HELP TOO. IT SURE WAS NICE USING A GOOD WELDER WITH SOME AMPS. DID YOU NOTICE THAT I DIDNT SPLATTER NEAR AS MUCH ON THE LAST WELDS/ WWWEEEE!
When I get around to mine I think ill buy the mount and just build the alt. I don't have much experience with metal working and don't want to chop anyone's head off.
@photolodge HEY MAN IF YOU CAN CAST THE ROTORS, AND WIND THE COILS, AND CAST THE STATOR, I'M SURE WE CAN WORK OUT THE REST OF THE METAL WORK PRETTY EASY. I LIKE TO TRAVEL TOO.
Ron here from Australia, once again mate - a fine production, great detail and very easy to follow, cant wait to see it finished. I was just thinking, have you ever thought of making a vertical one, i reckon it would have to be more efficient, wouldn't it tell me your thoughts on this.
Because in Australia our power bills are astronomical very expensive we pay 21-25 cents per kilowatt depending on the utility company you are with, so building windmills and solar to me is the go, cheers
@ronnie8991 HEY RONNIE, THE BEST VAWT IN MY OPINION, IS THE LENZ TURBINE, INVENTED BY ED LENZ. IT USES LIFT INSTEAD OF DRAG. THIS MEANS IT CATCHES MORE OF THE POWER FROM THE WIND BY FASTER ROTATIONS, THUS CUTTING THE AIR MORE TIMES PER DISTANCE OF WIND TRAVELING THROUGH IT. AND FASTER SPEED MEANS A BETTER RESPONCE. LESS DRAG MEANS LESS POWER LOST. AND AN AXIAL FLUX WOULD NOT HAVE TO BE GEARED UP EITHER. JUST A DIFFERENT SET OF WINDINGS. HAWT'S ARE MORE EFFICIENT AND FASTER.
To get an easier - smoother - faster - ready to cut/restart on steel, run a disk grinder over the area to be cut [front/back side] just enough to get rid of the rust/corrosion. Its amazing how much better the cut will be and easier to do.
Since you give out so much info, thought I'd share a little on cutting steel.

Why aren't generators made out of permanent magnets? I can understand the lack of control but still, wouldn't that be endless power?

@undertake782 OH BOY!, GREAT QUESTION. MAGNETS ARE EXPENSIVE, SO INDUCTION GENERATORS ARE CHEAPER TO MAKE.

@ronnie8991
Y'see
WarblesOnALot 3 months ago

If you boys end up selling this stuff, let me know
photolodge 3 months ago

OH YA.... YES I HAVE
