The interesting part about this tune is they are playing back a sampled guitar power chord at different pitches, in addition to the speech at the beginning and end, an using the nes square wave channels to handle the lead. The NES can already do a fair rendition of rock as it is (Rockman a.k.a. Megaman games specialize in it, of course) but this goes beyond what the other games do.

@Gamiac - there was no standardized protocol or format. Each developer had their own way of putting music in the game, and probably very few of them used something MIDI-based. I make NES music myself using FamiTracker, and I used to do so using MML, which is basically a cumbersome text-based format.
