No, actually Gyros works another way... Gyro tends to stay in the direction because of opposite forces generated when you try to move a rotating object out of it's axis...

Measure of force gives you an indication of the movement applied to the rotating object so aircraft can "correct" their direction...

I think you can make a compass with a peice of cork, bowl of water, needle and a magnet. Rub one end of the needle wit the magnet and put it on the cork in the water.

They're not, actually. Earths geographical poles (like, what we consider to be the north and south poles) aren't 100% aligned with Earths magnetical poles. Wiki "Magnetical poles" or somesuch if you want the details.
