  • Actually this is the most effective scare tatic commercial to this day

  • Funny, how dems and repubs have changed places.

  • @fonkymaster Explain yourself.

  • That sounds like something Coach Carr (from Mean Girls) would say. XD

  • Choose me! Or be nuked!

  • This ad only ran one time on TV then was pulled.

  • It's not ironic. It's fair game.

  • To think Republicans have now recently released a similar ad against Barack Obama. Republicans using a tactic that was once used by Democrats. Talk about irony.

  • It's amazing what a century of politics does to political parties. They switch places. XD

  • @Redward652 Why do you say that? Goldwater advocated using nukes in Nam and the purpose of this ad was to sensibilize people to what this would mean on the ground: the death of many innocents, including little children, even if no blond and caucasian, still little innocent souls. Some say it worked and help him win. Not so sure about that, though.

  • @bart11114 From a neutral perspective I personally don't think this ad- as fear-mongering and negative as it is- is as bad as the ads that Lee Atwater introduced in 1988. Atwater personally dug into Dukakis' background, whilst Goldwater publically made himself look an absolute dumb-ass when he campaigned.

  • This ad was for the Election of 1964, right? LBJ versus Goldwater? Pretty much LBJ grounded on Goldwater for suggesting the use of nuke war to prevent communism... I would have to agree with what FAHayek89 said on the ad parts, cuz even I've learned that LBJ was a known bully, but that's how politicians are in history.. =/

  • @angelwriter18 Just watch our for "The Johnson Treatment." ;)

When it comes to politics, you must bully up.

  • smart ad

  • Vienam war was not a big issue untill a few mounths after LBJs inguation because in 1964 was focus on Civil rights and AntiNuclar weaoens.

  • @Ja100453 plus anti-war didn't really get going till people started seeing broadcast on tv from vietnam

  • We must love each other... or die. LOL

  • Talk about the exploitation of children

  • That was awesome. And we think the ads today are nasty. The choices were LBJ or Death By Nuke! LOL.

  • The ad was low, but mild by LBJ standards. LBJ committed abuses of power during the '64 election that made Watergate pale in comparison. J. Edgar Hoover openly admitted to bugging Goldwater's campaign plane on Johnson's orders and CIA director Colby admitted to using CIA agents to spy on Goldwater and obtain advance copies of his speeches and policy proposals to allow LBJ to preempt then with speeches of his own. Quite simply, LBJ was a criminal.

  • @FAHayek89 He certainly was. My Dad told me he was an even bigger than Nixon. Some souces say that John may have had a hand in the JFK assasination.

  • i remember this ad- i was a little older than this girl- i always noticed it was johnsons voice for the countdown. after that i never feared nuclear threat again or trusted the government

  • Pff. Can't believe this actually worked on people. I'm pretty far left myself, but come on, people...

  • Yeah I know. And the funny thing is, when you say "far left", conservative in '64 and conservative now are way different. Barry Goldwater was pro-choice and favored gay rights. Now "conservatives" are the religious right. Also, I think goldwater lost in '64 because he opposed the Civil rights act of 1964 and was endorsed by the KKK. Which im sure being supported by the KKK is a liability.

  • What you're ALL overlooking is the fact that all politicians are self-serving, bastards, end of story. Don't try and bullshit eachother into thinking that one party is evil and the other isn't. Politics are based on war, corruption, and murder. Name one political party that hasn't been involved in something disgustingly wrong presently or in history. True Democrat, true Republican? All brainwashed slaves! Do some real in depth research, ignore the campaign ads, bring back true democracy!

  • This is DAMN creepy & not even from the political standpoint!

  • Independent ftw!

  • Q: Who blew up the first nuclear bomb?

    A: FDR/Truman (Democrats)

Q: Who escalated the Cuba-crisis to the edge of a nuclear war?

    A: Kennedy (Democrat)

  • Q: Who ended the cold war?

    A: Reagan (Republican!) YEAH!

  • who ended WWII with less casualties than would have happened had it have gone on?

    Democrats.

  • Those Democrats weren't part of the New Left like you are. They stood for something right.

  • This ad for Johnson said that we much "love each other or die." Exactly how much love did Johnson extend to the Vietnamese people?

  • This was when the Democrats were changing policies due to the New Left starting. Basically the party went corrupt.

  • Q:Which US President sent US troops to Vietnam? A: Johnson (Democrat) Q:Which US President withdrew from Vietnam A: Nixon (Republican) Q:Which US President was one of the main reasons for the fall of the USSR? A: Reagan (Republican) Q:Who blew up Hiroshima and Nagasaki? A: Truman (Democrat) Q: Who was the first US President to invite a black man in to the White House? A: Roosevelt (Republican) Q: Who stopped slavery? A: Lincoln (Republican)
  • who do black people vote for 90% of the time?

    Democrats...

    lol irelevance

  • Vietnam was pointless really. If you support the US getting involved in that you support the US getting involved in every civil war a country has. And Truman destroying those cities was the right thing to do. The Japanese would not surrender and it would mean an invasion of Japan (another Normandy).

As a Conservative Republican I like to give credit where credit is due.

  • You also forgot Eisenhower desegregated schools in the south...NO democrat would do that.

  • You can't really compare racial/party politics before 1964 with racial/party politics after. There were a lot of segregationists in the Democratic Party until Johnson supported the Civil Rights Act; after that a lot of them went Republican.

  • SupremeMajinBuu:

Q: Who prevented the Cuban Missile Crisis from escalating into nuclear ammrageddon?

    A: Kennedy (Democrat)

Q: Which US President sent US troops to Iraq?

    A: Bush (Republican)

Q: Which US Presidential candidate wants to withdraw from Iraq?

    A: Obama (Democrat)

Q: Which party has seen the lion's share (I.E. 7/9 according to the US News website) of black presidential candidates?

A: Democrats (of the other two, one was Republican and one was independant)

  • what about vietnam? you didnt mention that!

  • It wasn't an issue until the first operations in early 1965

  • Put simply sir, you are being repulsively biased. Both republican and democratic (and other) presidents have had their sucesses and their failures... I mean, you'd no doubt start screaming blue murder at me if I wrote off Republican presidential sucesses the way you just wrote off Democratic ones...

Just remember, there'll always be someone ready and willing to call you out on your bias... :)

  • You can play that game both ways, though. Q: Who supported the Civil Rights Act? A: Johnson (Democrat) Q: Who opposed the Equal Rights Amendment? A: Reagan (Republican) Q: Who created Social Security? A: Roosevelt (Democrat) Q: Who created Medicare and Medicaid? A: Johnson (Democrat) Q: Who called Medicare "socialism"? A: Reagan (Republican) etc.
  • If you're a true Republican you'll give credit where credit is due. FRD and Truman did what they had to do.

  • I would rather die.

  • dear god- thats chilling.

  • It was only aired once, but it lost Goldwater the election. Very powerful campaign add, the only other way to have lost him more votes was to accuse him of being a Communist. I do have to hand it to Goldwater for being the intellectual that he was, have you ever seen his bumpersticker? It read: Au H2O

  • Attack ads pre-date the Whigs. Look at how vicious the campaign between Adams and Jefferson became in 1800.

  • the ultimate attack ad.....still disquieting after all these years.....

  • Actually, the politics of attack go back even to the days of the Whigs.

Goldwater lost because he implied that he would use nuclear weapons, as evidenced in his quote "Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice."

  • And Democrats always whine that Republicans use attack ads in campaigns now. Well, look how started it!

  • So what's Harper doing for Canada these days?

  • stupid asses fell for it and voted for more nanny government, sending us into hell. We cannot escape.

  • Chilling commercial. Makes me wonder if that would have come true with Goldwater...

  • Goldwater's slogan was "In your heart, you know he's right."

The reply to that was "In your heart you know he might." and "In your guts you know he's nuts."

This was 3 years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. The actual destruction of all mankind was a realistic fear at the time.
