As Notre Dame has strong Irish links I am presuming that Damsha Bua is supposed to be Irish. It would appear that somebody got the spellling wrong at some stage as Damhsa Bua means Victory Dance in Irish.

This would be pronounced as DOW-SA BOO-A.

Actually, the UND Irish Guard are fairly properly dressed. The headdress and coat are taken almost directly from the UK military's Irish Guard. Instead of black trousers, like the UK Irish Guard (you see them at Buckingham Palace), they wear kilts and a large fly plaid (like the UK Irish Guard's musical detachment). The tartan the UND Irish Guard wear is a trademarked tartan (which is also registered in the UK) designed specifically for UND.

Given all of that, it's pretty darned accurate!

People seem to get so easily upset ...

What is interesting is the mish-mash of dress, traditions, culture and history from this side of the ocean which one can see has been borrowed and mixed together to conjure up this performance.

It has obviously become a tradition at this American university, and there is no obligation to get it right, but it is very obviously based on what somebody (who has done no research at all) thinks is a coherent form of dress.

Fun to watch though. :-)
