Beautiful birds. We had a few pair nesting near our house this summer. They have a nice courtship flight and can hang upside down like a parrot while feeding.
Aren't they cool? I'd never seen them before they showed up in the bird feeders about a month ago. I've learned that they're the largest pigeons in North America. They are impressively large. The mourning doves that come by are dwarfed by them. They're extremely finicky, have healthy appetites (seeds & fruit) & scatter when they get a hint of a person nearby. Today, I found them roosting in the peach tree -- Seems we've all been checking it (squirrels, birds, me), impatiently, for ripeness.
Pigeons are flying carp.
