Unfortunately you may just keep having the same problem again. You are riding a super sport bike. Not made for commuting & foul weather riding where you have to hook up a heated vest. Adding electrical accessories doesn't work. Sport tourers are designed for such riding & their rectifiers can usually handle the additional stress of added accessories. Sport bikes or street versions of race bikes are meant to be kept as light as possible, ridden fast & with little to no all day comfort in mind.
@VitalityJolt ya, I know. I have one cam for video and one cam for audio and then have to sync it up later. So when I try to sync it, sometimes it can get off due to the different speeds at which they both record. :(
yeah my regulator/rectifier was burned off the same exact way as you i have the same bike but silver and wight and mine died because of my alarm and my HID kit, and recently i crashed my bike and the frame snapped, if you love your bike and are concerned about your safety look up and review about gsxr frame welds cuz mine brock at the weld while riding, ride safe
Last week at the track I noticed the rectifier of my friends K9 gsxr was almost sticking out of the fairing. When I asked him about it he told the same thing. It got replaced and relocated on a recall.
The rectifier causes a lot of issues on various bikes. Probably because there aren't too many brands making them.
I was riding my brothers bike one day. I went over a spead bump and the bike totally died. The battery wire had come lose, so had to tighten that up and get goin again.
Hey this happens on the sport classic ducati, they put the rectifier under the seat? Allot of people relocate it so it get airflow somewhere. I agree with others here you should relocate it if it's somewhere hot and has no airflow.
If you google Thunder Mountain Motorcycle Rescue their website comes up as Thunder Mountain Transport. If you're in the Pacific Northwest area they're HIGHLY recommended. Great people.
Its amazing at what you can find out on the net, when the fiancée's Chevy started to play up I headed to the net and gathered a bunch of info, its also good I have mechanical knowledge but I don't know much about American vehicles. However I'm learning and eventually I'll be over there permanently to work on them.
You need to get the boyfriend on it! The problem lies actually with the heat coming from the engine. The original bracket of the recti can be modified to bring it more away from heat and into cooler side of the frame. Just check out GDC. There is a DIY thread. Changing the recti out for a new one is just playing with the consequences not fixing the cause!
You mentioned two different things, so I'll describe both for those curious. The rectifier turns the AC generated by the stator into DC. Regulator on the other hand does as you said, tries to keep the voltage around a particular level. Sometimes these components are a single replaceable part, other times seperate. Depends on the application. A car alternator, for example, usually has all of that stuff built in, so people usually buy a whole new one regardless of what actually failed inside.
Glad you made it out alright, that part of the highway would suck to have a bike die on. Side note about your helmet mount, the GoPro helmet mount uses an adhesive, no drilling needed right? Thinking about getting the Hero 960 and not sure if sticking it on a half-lid is the best idea lol.
@norsetenen side note.......if your gonna buy one go all out and get the 1080, just in case you want a little better quality or different accessories or what not......just thinking aloud, really. Either or would be great, but the 1080 has more settings and what not....all up to you though. Get either or and you will still be happy. (adhesive mounts / 200mph suction cup mount)
@norsetenen ya it is pretty bad with an entrance from a hwy and an exit super close converging. There are a few people who actually got pretty close trying to get off the exit by using the shoulder. *shakes head*
The gopro comes with adhesion mounts and a suction cup if you get the 1080 package. I think the 960 only comes with 2 or 3 sticky mounts.
