  • the magical years....

  • This is the song that I want to listen just before die.

  • Listen to the words of this song and they are very relevant to today.

  • Genesis songs always have intros that rule - but then the song gets EVEN BETTER - incredibler !! and of course this song is a glaring example -

  • I'm speechless.

  • Damn........absolutely mind blowing stuff!!

  • Peter Gabriel is one of if not the best musician ever

  • This track fucking wails.

  • Genesis pretty much covered all the bases in rock. I'll always be partial to their prog-heavy Gabriel period, but you can't deny what Phil brought to the table in the later years either. Props to one of THE most important groups in the history of popular music.

  • 0 people are in a land of confusion.

  • grew up listening to the most creative musicians in the history of modern music...and i am forever grateful!

  • These Boys are so obscure musically. I can't peg them. Brilliant, sort of like, Clockwork Orange meets Mary Poppins. Gotta Love them for their cross over the bridge and burn it down behind you quality.

  • 208 likes und 0 dislikes. Die Zahlen sprechen für sich

  • The band I was in while in high school, back around 1981, covered this song. Brings back many memories!!

  • how did they come up with this stuff, absolutely brilliant,so many peopledont know it exists.

  • nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.................

  • 07:09-07:24. I wonder if Sabbath or KISS listened to this!

  • @ForceMaximus84

They surely did. Everybody and his brother who was born in the '50s and '60s certainly knew (and listened) this. Consider that Black Sabbath (1968) are from UK too and this piece is dated 1970...

  • Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

  • Hey shaggy this was released in 1970 . And for the other guy quite a bit bands have done that rhythm especially back in the 70s Kansas was another band that did it as well I dig this song live and origianl

  • @onab

Iam happy to hear somebody who still remember also kansas. They are great. And of course genesis. Both are my favorite bands.

  • one of the best of there early works.vocals are so good

  • I can also point out the distorted vocals could also be a Sonovox, which was the precursor to the modern vocoder. The Sonovox was popular from the late 1930s through the mid 1960s. The Who used one of those to great effect in 1967 for the radio jingles heard intertwined on their "Sell Out" album.

  • Tell me my life is about to begin, tell me I'm a hero. Promise me all your violent dreams, light up your body with anger!

  • @MabusZero Stand up and fight 4 you know we are right. we must fight through the lies that will spread like disease through our..... .Hard core gut wrenching tune that needs to be heard by all, at least ....once

  • 240p is too bad resolution, this song deserves more.

  • @paulocapella theres nothing to view, its sound quality you should be worried about.

  • @fmsdaman1 Not really....anything you upload will be re-compressed to YouTube own set of compression settings. You might consider trying to master differently for videos you will upload to YouTube as it tends to clip the high and low end (as a lot of compression schemes do). Also, the best audio quality running at the highest bitrate will be the HD encodes...so you might consider uploading videos that are at least 1280x720, 30fps, using a high bitrate.

  • @paulocapella ok, thanks. i nevr knew that. the song sounded fine to me, but i was on my laptop, not my desktop, where i might have noticed a difference

  • in pices this song is more heavy than zeppelin or deep purple!

  • gotta say. i dont really like Genesis at all, but this one song is actually pretty damn good. I'd still rather throw on ELP's Brain Salad Surgery though...

  • I decided to take a trip down memory lane when I read that NYC was experiencing a Giant Hogweed infestation. Seriously! Never knew it really existed.

I was such a big, classic Genesis fan. I still would marry Peter Gabriel..lol!

He still rocks my world and gives me goosebumps.

Phil Collins had a good voice, but he eventually ruined Genesis. He was a great drummer though.

  • @sbrawsm People who believe Phil Collins ruined Genesis are retarded...

  • @ThroughRock I think they were pretty shit from 1978 onwards but it's not Phil's fault. Not entirely anyway.

  • i feel so young and heavy when i hear this song.

  • ah i love this song!! especially the part with the flute

  • una fusione tra progressive e hard rock perfetta!!!

  • the knife ...il loro bis ai concerti per anni (!)

perfetto con quel ritmo ....una cavalcata fino al ..piacere finale

    claudio

  • Awesome! My favorite Genesis song! You'd think they would play some Peter Gabriel Genesis on rock radio once in a while instead of the popy Phil Collins songs all the time.

  • Thank you for revealing me to myself, Genesis. I too was only seeking freedom and self validation when I entered the military. Now I understand my own tragic monstrousness.

  • this song for ever

  • did they sample from the doors?

  • @calvzz Heck no. Tony Banks and Ray Manzarek, while both amazing pianists, have different styles that are unique to their own bands. Tony may have taken hints from Ray for this song, but this song is completely original and no sampling took place whatsoever.

  • Idk about sampling, but Genesis or Deep Purple defiantly came pretty close to copying one or the other with the riff at 7:09 in The Knife and the riff at 3:19 in Child in Time. They're very similar, but not identical, and both albums were released in 1971, so it makes me wonder which was first...

  • @Shaggyshadric

if it makes you feel better, they both ripped it off from Ravel. Its a bolero rhythm and its really common, I know Diamond Head and Led Zeppelin used it too. Search up Am I evil? by Diamond Head for another example of it.

  • @calvzz This song was a Gabriel idea. He felt that the music they were playing "lacked balls", and he wanted to do something The Nice-esque. Keith Emerson also praised this song.

  • did they sample from the doors?

  • can they make it again ???????????

  • @oldfatbubba I actually think the LP version is superior to the CD release.

  • @SPeacock The Old LP was all we had in the seventies. I used to come home from School and get up to my room and put this straight on.. These days, kids come home and play cds.. not the same..lol

  • @These4walls05 Of course it's the same :-) I used to have to cycle to the library for music for the little they had. Now the complete Genesis, live or outtakes are just available in 2 or 3 lists :-)

  • @These4walls05 Kids today - they don't know what they're missing :)

  • @These4walls05

Haha, and blow fluff away from the needle, just to make sure that old Sony had a clean sound, eh?! I did that with this and Deep Purple's Made In Japan. :)

  • brilliant album and brilliant song.

  • We need peter back'''

  • prog for ever

  • @btom22259 AMEN!!

  • Apples to my ears like my own created clear applewine. What is pure and genuine, is...

  • according to the stats, this vid is very popular in Italy and nowhere else. Man, it's great being an American Idiot (sarcsm)

  • I love listening to this song while playing EverQuest, yes I know it's an old game, but it's my favorite hobby.. lol.

  • The first great Genesis song! Trivia: Genesis beat Norah Jones to the punch by thorty-odd years as the first rock act on an all-jazz label when impulse!-ABC Records issued this in America.

  • Why, oh why, does the musicindustry hate us who want´s this?

  • Wow what a cool song. Great guitar work.

  • this song and "the musical box" = sex to the ears

  • @IpCrackle you got that right and combined with back in NYC . There is the trifactor, Personally beside NYC the equally Riveting song for me is "Bodies" Sex Pistols. Nasty but true to the core, harsh but a gripping slice of reality, somethings are not meant for the faint of heart. Salute!

  • @IpCrackle simply and perfectly stated = excellent taste in music. salute!

  • @IpCrackle: a so called eargasm..! ;-)

  • just great

  • a classic sign of things to come from these guys.

  • @txeire another compilation is on its way this year. Stay tuned...
