I know a really simple way to solve the dilemma of "Do they damage effectiveness or not?" Form units of all-GLBT soldiers and put them in the same areas doing the same job as "straight" units. Then do a study on how well they perform compared to their straight counterparts. It may not solve the "unit cohesion" problem, but it will probably prove that they're as good if not better soldiers who deserve a place in the military.
