@NMERider I did have a piece of real thin plastic lying around so I cut the strips out of that. My boom is nearly complete now. Can you tell me how much past your leading edge does your camera sit. It looks to me like 2 feet also I noticed your camera is mounted above the mount not under the mount is there a reason for that. Is the prospective better with the shot coming from above the sail rather then under the sail Duh I think I just answered my own question.
A friend and me are preparing to copy your cam boom for the upcoming season. I was wondering about the aluminium strips at both ends - I don't think you are mentioning the lengths and I don't know if they are critical in any way, but I'd hate to get it wrong - my guess is they are both about 8 inches long, would that be correct?
Awesome mount, gotta build me one of those. I did laugh a little tho at the copyright notice however, since copyright in this case can only be applied to the instructional guide on how to build it or the video, not the device itself. If you want to prevent someone from building these for profit you would have to actually protect it with a patent, which you could probably easily get considering now days you can even patent a stick
@macsux By all means build the mount and use it. I like what I'm seeing from others who have made their own.
The copyright issue is for the video. I have already been plagiarized by unscrupulous video hosting sites who put their name on my work. The cost of obtaining a patent is less than the potential license revenue. I want my name or ID associated with the design and execution of this device. Therein in lies the value. If I engineered this gem imagine what else I have done and can do.
@NMERider Right on man, keep on inventing, I was just teasing. Hope you don't mind I posted links to this video on hanggliding . org wiki as it's some grade A material stuff for the community - keep it coming :)
Thanks Jonathan, that's looks great! perfect winter project for me. For my SD600 I'm looking at a .7x Wide angle converter which should give me a 24mm lens angle, and possibly a Go pro on the keel. I'm flying in St Andre next year, so will post the results.
@TheAyeinthesky My mother also warned me about these camera mounts. I use Powerdirector 8 for my old 32-bit PC. They have a new version for 64-bit PCs.
Such a simple elegant solution, very nice! Now if you mount the camera to a tiny motorized platter and install an Arduino board and hat switch on the cross tube you can get inflight adjustable video! Heh heh, just trying to help... ;)
@pdutube Believe it or not. I am training my pet rats to run along a tiny rail attached to the leading edge w/ GoPro cameras strapped on their backs and get all sorts of interesting angles.............................Seriously....................... NOT!
@NMERider Sure, why not. ROTFL! A Habit Trail tucked between the fabric so as not to mess up the airflow! If you actually did that, it would probably be the most watched video on YouTube EVER! I just watched a video of a guy who has a dog carrier attached to his ultralight. Put a collar cam on that puppy!
@jimmo Howdy Jimmo - Yes it's a bit long for casual viewing but not when it's time to build one. :-D It's tough to please such a diverse audience. Maybe I should become a Scottish trials bike champion? LOL
Where did yoy get the Mylar strip
bnieves100 7 months ago
@bnieves100 I've had a roll of 14 mil Mylar for many years. You can use any semi-flexible material.

@bdoets Hi Bart - The cross strip is about 11" and the tail strip is about 6". Good luck! Jonathan

@NMERider Thanks! We'll go see what comes out of it...

Do you counter balance the weight on the other wing?
aylesmerep 1 year ago
@aylesmerep No. The whole thing is lightweight that I don't even notice it out there.

@TheAyeinthesky Well. Uh. O.k. It's a toy. But then so is the Hubble Space Telescope. ;-)

Excellent design! I've been using a sprog mount for a ContourHD on my WW Sport 2, but I'm definitely going to build one of these.

hi Jonathan, Thanks for sharing your mounting system and detail explanation. This is something new for me.

@rickskater Hi Rick, Please build one and put it to good use. This should help a lot of pilots make more engaging videos. Jonathan

Thanks again :-)

@GalloQuirico You're welcome. If more pilots use this mount design I'll get to see more videos from an angle I enjoy watching from!

Hi Jon,
very nicely made and a clear explanation; though a bit long.;-)
Fly and ride safe!
