  • what is this song called!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @alfiebonassward96 quite firm

  • is he sat on a chair not a stool???

  • @MrGregles -- Yeah man! Best way to do it

  • It is HARD to make drums sound like that!

  • not to mention his skill level, any drummer can tell this guy is outwordly

  • Master Works ! Great ! No.-1 -Drummer :-)))

  • 2:18 is hilarious

  • @penisbreath952 the name of the song is Quite Firm by Laurence Cottle

  • does anyone know the name of this song?

  • I keep coming back to watch this little video... Gavin has a huge vocabulary on the drum kit and every time I watch it, I keep discovering new little funky things. It's a pity I have only two thumbs.

  • I THINK THIS GUY IS GREAT, AND HIS BAND ALSO..

BUT HE DONT REACH THE FEET OF MIKE PORTNOY!

SEARCH HIM IN THE YOUTUBE BAR ABOVE!

  • @DviniciusribeiroT

Gavin Harrison and Mike Portnoy have two totally different styles of playing

  • @IChoseTheRedPill

I agree you, but mike portnoy can do what gavin does and his style too, but gavin cant. you con see the similar style of plating of mike portnoy when he`s in dream theather. his songs are not realy heavey metal, as averegend sevehold , when he was there. this is true

  • @DviniciusribeiroT As a huge DT fan, I consider Gavin to be a better, more interesting drummer than Mike. Not by much, mind you, but Harrison's playing is just unreal.

  • @KingZerxst Dunno man, i cant say anything abouts these stuff, im just a music lover

  • @DviniciusribeiroT Mike Portnoy always been an inspiration for me, and i always thought of him as one of the greatest drummer of all time, but then i discovered Gavin.

MP has done a lot for music industry and is greatly appreciated by anobody who knows him.

But Gavin surpass most drummer..and even most Mainstream musician by his creativity and love of music.

  • @DviniciusribeiroT I love you sarcasm.

  • What a groovy fucker, oh my God, I can't get over it...

  • World class musician-great groove and musicianship!

  • Where is his clinic?

  • Ahh i got it, just common time, He just do it.

  • Song is called 'quite firm' - there is a clip of it in you tube live on some TV show with chubby bass genius Laurence Cottle's quintet doin it...not Gavin playing drums though - is prob Ian Thomas

  • name of the song?? pleasee

  • Im going to his drum clinic 8th June...yay

  • Duuuuuude!!!! You are the man an my inspiration. I've had a few that kept my attention but not for long. You are as you've stated.. Just a drummer. But a prodigy non the less. Thanks for being born :) Keep kickin chicken!!!

  • who know ,what time signature is it at 1.15 ?

  • @prdgroup It's all the same time signature and tempo...Gavin just likes fucking with people

  • @kewlnrd Hmm... I'm pretty sure that part isn't common time and I have to try count on it again and again, or will I wrong ?

  • 1) Take a DNA sample of Mr Harrison.

    2) Craft a clone.

    3) Now you can have the clone playing with Dream Theater and the original with Porcupine Tree.

    4) Enjoy !!

  • @subermike51 you obviously misunderstood the concept and the result of cloning to the worst degree. Good job! :)

  • @subermike51 as much as i love Gavin Harrison.. i dont think he would be a good candidate for dream theater. its not a question whether he could play the music or not either. its just... hes Gavin Harrison.. him and metal dont seem to go together xD.

  • justin bieber disliked this video 8 times

  • 2:12 Gavin's like:

    "I'm tired..."

    *Cheering and applause begin*

    "STFU!"

  • Yes! Gavin is just a drumming wonder god. Amazing. Also whoever composed that tune is quite something man..

  • Gavin Is Genius!

  • watched this twice and both times my jaw was on the floor

  • AMAZING MY ROLE MODEL AND MY FAVOURITE DRUMMER I WANT TO BE LIKE HIM. my drum teacher says when im older i could cos im only 10 ! YALDY

  • that rimshot fill @ 3:11 is just orgasmic

  • holy sh*t, this is really hot stuff!

  • I will meet him in a few weeks :)

  • Guys i know that this is quite firm for laurence cottle.. but its not the same version in his album, i cant find this exact version.. if anyone can help ??

  • 3:09... omg

  • 3:09 .... omg

  • 8 deaf people!

  • If anyone's wondering, this awesome piece is called Quite Firm, by Laurence Cottle-- I was wondering for ages

  • Great show! Heroic stuff.

  • Most tasteful drummer around! SPICYYYYYY :)

  • So who are the 8 bastards that dislike this?!

  • @92JinKazama I think the guys that disliked this either write for Rolling Stone or post polls for VH1. What a bunch of uneducated pricks.

  • @jonesn4drums Indeed.

  • That thing he does at 3:11 really makes me feel like touching myself...

  • Does this song have a name? Is on one of Gavin Harrison's solo recordings? This IS amazing!

  • @edovinus

It's called Quite Firm, by the bassist Laurence Cottle. :-)

  • @TheMightyHartley EXCELLENT! Thanks for the info!

  • When it get's into 2:30, it makes me so happy :)

  • Even the song is a real masturbaion...he made it so easy listening.

  • @tod4y ...i might be wrong, so correct me, if i am, but, lol, is that not THE very definition of a "solo effort"? xD

  • @wisemarine I'm sure he felt there were plenty of mistakes.

  • This exemplifies Brufords retirement, bitter sweet. Yet I'm sure he feels content knowing this guy is around.

  • Whats the fill at 2:10? is sounds immense.

  • @mopedman1 if your still interested i believe the lick is - F F R L r r l l -

He flams the R L slightly between a tom (R) and the snare (L). Simple but exquisitely executed.

  • @Desopian Thanks a lot dude, ill get workin on it ;)

  • Nice ... really nice!

  • something truly demonic about this guy. Like danney carey but Gavin's managed to control it. Wow.

  • I wonder if ANYONE in the world doesn't like Gavin. I really do wonder...

  • 1:25 - 1:31

    - sensational fill!

  • AWESOME!!!

  • ...amazing !!!

  • man, he gets every little accent and timing right! amazing drummer.

  • Bravissimo !!

  • omfg this is so incredibly amazing! how much can you love this guy? it seems every time you watch a gavin harrison vid, you fall deeper in love with just who he is as a drummer, as a musician

  • Yep... God's all ears - ''cos Gav's borrowed his drumkit to show him some groooooooove!.

  • fucking brilliant! i love it..

  • Seriously, this drummer.. ? In my opinion he's definitely one of the best, although I know you can't say who's "the best".

But I really reckon he's the best though... His timing.. Dynamics, technique over all. feeling - and that fucking creativity!

  • @SlitWristSaviour1 i don`t like to compare. but the "best drummer" doesn`t exist. All drummers play different types of music, its almost imposible to name the "best drummer" in the world. But, my top drummers are gavin harrison, mike portnoy and tony royster jr

  • @SlitWristSaviour1 no doubt bro

  • absolutely sick! I am not a drummer but have found myself watching this video time and time again. The timing, feel and subtlety of Mr Harrison is without question the art of the craft today!

Can't wait to see Mr Harrison in my first Porcupine Tree concert next time they hit Chicago!

  • @SlitWristSaviour1

I second that. There are numerous great drummers out there with excellent timing, dynamics and feel - but what makes one stand out from the masses is creativity and boy, does this man have that by the bucket! He has got to go down in history as one of the most innovative, creative and influential drummers of this century, in my opinion.

  • frankensteins monster carvin it up.

  • That guy will sure influence the next generations of drummers .

  • Whats the name of the song, please?

  • @tod4y

It called Quite Firm, by Lawrence Cottle.

This is Gavin's one-off interpretation though; the original is quite different.

  • where i can get that version in audio??

  • NAME OF THE SONG PLEASE

  • @LegacyofDeathTV "Quite Firm" by Laurence Cottle.

  • to: ChrisFreek

gavin harrinson plays it on he's way.

and plays definatley much groover than Ian Thomas. i mean i've u think gavin doesn't have the "groove" u realy don't know what the groove is. I mean listen he's so creative! and the accents just u cant copy it. it is unplayable!

shame you to compare gavin with Ian thomas.

  • that's my coffe every morning!

  • Great groove and musicality...according to me Neil Peart and Gavin are the most musical drummers of today

  • and the fill at 3.11 :)

  • from 2.00 this owns completely, obviously he's got a click track in his ear but still..

  • you reckon...coz there's bits where its really tight with the backing track...its levi btw

  • This guy has definately got "GROOVE"!!!! Love his playing.

  • GAVIN HARRISON he's the best!!!!

  • interesante estilo, buen groove, excelente técnica, pero falta manejo escénico... =)

  • es musico, no cirquero!

  • goryluis: Excelentísima respuesta.

  • y tu eres? :s

  • awesome!!!wat snare tuning does he use?...he uses this everytime...even in the modern drummer festival 2008

  • the kind that he likes when he tunes it. try it out sometime. custom.

  • Does anyone have the playalong track, by any chance?

  • what version of quite firm is that??????

  • it's kind of misleading, his shy demeanor, slouched stance and matched grip make him look like a dork who's just starting to play drums....but when he starts playing...jawdropping... I am not worthy!!!

  • what does matched grip have to do with making him look like a beginner drummer?

    (to kcullamar)

    but yes

    he is amazing isnt he

  • nothing really, except to me it's how he APPEARED, including his disinterested stance, lack of air and pomp (AKA no flashy stick twirling), and how he used matched grip that made me think when I first saw him play (the first few bars..)that he was just a "regular drummer"....until I realized he was doing odd time signatures with crazy fills and superhuman double bass speed..truly, one of the best , right up there with my favorites: peart, colauita, minnemann, mayer, and weckl

  • hands-down awesome drummer.. he did drum tracks for Incognito (Inside Life)....this performance reminds me of how awesome Incognito sounds.

  • I'm totally agree with billpeart. You wrote a very intelligent comment. This video is fine in a way, like others are in different ways.

  • I agree with bill pert ;D compare ideas.

  • why compare? its not a sport, just enjoy the video..its soooo unfortunate that every vid i watch somewhere in the comments is "jordison is better, peart is better, portnoy is better, jojo is better"...who cares, none of the pros do. small minds compare people, big minds compare ideas!!!

  • @billpeart youre right . music is not a sport so stop compare whos "better" or not.

  • @billpeart to further your comment - small minds think joey is good at all :P

  • @DagonMetalMusic I dont think you understood what I was getting at. Im basically saying "who cares"?

  • @billpeart I was making a joke. I'm no fool.

  • @DagonMetalMusic i guess im the fool for not getting your joke! LOL take care and drum on!!!

  • @billpeart Haha! Keep well man!

  • @billpeart I like that, man. Gonna have hijack that quote from ya, I totally agree.

  • @billpeart the idea of how a person plays is an extension of the person. Therefore referencing how someone does something is the same thing as referencing the person. You can't tell the difference between two things without recognizing that there's a difference in the first place. And comparison is a large part of learning. However simply saying something is better without discussing what specifically makes them/it better is useless. I'll agree there.

  • @Str8Faced The point Im trying to make is that theres not a "best" drummer out there. Art has no bests, just favorites.

  • @billpeart So true! :)

  • @billpeart Well said.

  • @billpeart

"small minds compare people, big minds compare ideas!!!"

    Precisely!

  • @billpeart Nice comment, every drummer has their own style, let's just appreciate the fact they all have expanded the way drums are being played

  • Gavin, nice laptop. Oh- sorry- the drumming was nice too.

  • Tight!

  • 3:12 woot :D

  • and also i love the "jaco" type bassline

  • That's the amazing Laurence Cottle on bass. He also wrote and arranged the whole tune.

  • the victor wooten of drumming ;) so technical and such groove definitely one of the best drummers in the world..if not ever

  • I get what you mean but, Harrison is far more progressed then Wooten. Harrison is a man that can play metal, jazz, funk, blues, and what does this make him. A PROGRESSIVE DRUMMER!!!! He has won prog drummer of the year so that says it all. The man is a drum God....

  • well that is based on votes. I mean.. Portnoy won it s a cople times in a row.. In my opinion hes not that good.. But that is my opinion. I dont say Gavin is bad, I even love his style and his playing, but just that price doesnt make him any better.

  • what "price" are you talking about?

  • nvm I think that the author removed his commend.

  • "He has won prog drummer of the year so that says it all. " by SephynnXx

  • The 3:17 fill is so COOL !

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone can show me a video where I can look at the movements of fill at 3:27?

    This is an awesome drummer..

  • Then you need to start listening to Porcupine Tree and jump on board!

  • By far my favourite drummer.. I get to see him perform with PT this september! I'm so pumped!!

  • word

  • This is true funk.

  • amen to that!

  • Gavin's got to be the counterexample to "Jack of all trades and master of none." He's great at metal, prog, jazz, and apparently funk.

  • The difference between Gavin and Mike is that Gavin can play what Mike can play but Mike can't play what Gavin can play :P

  • gavin can't blast that good ;)

  • he also doesnt want to, so he doesn't bother practicing it, but i bet if he did im sure he would be able to without a problem

  • @axelpl - Blast?? A limited technique at best. I can blast, but I can't emulate Gavin.

    Epic fail.

  • WTF!. OMG!. Holy Fuck!...... All the other drummers that I used to admire have just been blown completely outta the water....

  • dream theater sucks dude sorry

  • WTF

  • dude they don't suck, their all talented. obviously your opinion towards them is negative, but that has nothing to do with their skill level.

  • now they do...but not their old shit like images and words

  • The best video on Youtube.

  • Ok. Fair enough. To each their own.

  • Ok.This is just my opinion here and it's because I am a power rock or fusion player primarily. But my style of drumming hears a million opportunities throughout the Dt catalog that I've heard to play different fills than always single stroke rolls. I believe this could be accomplished w/out sacrificing any integrity of the music it would just be interpreted differently. If you think that the way it is now is ultimate more power to you. Just imagine if Virgil Donati recut a track for them.

  • See, to me the cool thing about Dream Theater is that everyone in that band plays EXACTLY the same. It works the same way as how Flea and Chad Smith are a great duo. While I agree that someone like Virgil would play his ass of and play more complex things I still don't think he would be right. It's like if Vai took Petrucci's place, it would change the sound to a point where it wouldn't gel the same as that band. The point is is that combination of people plays so well to eachothers strengths.

  • DT is all fast and loud and powerful and there's no room for Gavin Harrison's or Virgil Donati's crazy pockets and taste. DT is meant to be basic in its complexity so to speak...

  • but dream theatre dont play that fast

  • You know how Portnoy naturally makes his time changes sound smooth? Some drummers know how to make a flam or a drag sound like the song revolved around it. They are that skilled at making their liitle licks sound natural. Or drop a press roll w/dynamics in a fill and bust oit loose with a syncopated paradiddle or something to where you'd swear the song needed that exact fill when it really didn't but that particular drummer thought it did.

  • I'm not sure I follow you, I lost you at the last two lines. I feel like comparing Portnoy and Gavin doesn't really work. They're completely different styles. Portnoy is a power drummer and he doesn't play doubles because A) He doesn't need to and B) because more often then not you get more power from singles. Gavin plays more jazzy and it's tasteful. He likes his loose pocketed sextuplet fills and lots of ghost notes. To play that stuff you use doubles. They're both great at they're own style.

  • I also want to point out that in classical percussion training they tell you it's better to use single instead of doubles for consistency of sound. I'm sure that would be a large part of Portnoys constant use of singles.

  • If you want to compare similar drummers...I wouldn't look to Portnoy or Neil Peart.

I'd compare him to Billy Cobham.

Both are fucking supernatural yet tasteful in their methods of rhythmic domination
