  • solsuby hill, anyone?

  • @vannin666 If I remember rightly, Howard's wife had a compensation payment that she used to help her husband's career. But he'd been gigging and working in a regular job for a good while as well. A very focused and determined musician. Used to come home from work every night and do an hour or two's voice training, without fail.

  • @vannin666 save up money as much as they could

  • @vannin666 It was easier to rob banks then :P

  • Comment removed

  • @vannin666 As I understand it, (going back a long time OK!) his wife was in a car accident or some other injury case, so they won a lot of money in the award/payout and he invested this into the Jupiter and other high end devices of the time. Coupled with his obvious talent, it was a no brainer from there.

  • He doesn't seem as enthusiastic about the new digital Jupiter 80 in his latest interview. LOL

  • I wish you all the best, Howard... from Poland. :)

  • Sounds or lyrics, he made it well, good stuff from the eighties, jupiter 8 he used in his first albums probably, on stage we can notice a Prophet T8 also but he never talked about... strange. Anyway, in the 90' he turned also somewhat acoustic shows, but without leaving his first analog sounds completely, were he comes back to from time to time, in special cases.

  • @vannin666 the record labels paid for it

  • @vannin666 Beg, Borrow, Steal....or they had rich parents.

Who knows, may be they just worked really hard.

  • @vannin666 nobody owned them outright back then

  • Pre-MIDI was called DCB and you bought a Roland DCB to MIDI converter.

Jupiter 8 used with the Super Jupiter made for one incredible fat sound. And teamed up with the Mini Moog and the Memory Moog made for incredible possibilities!! Sadly artist like Howard Jones never got heavily into these synth sounds, rather he used them to accent his music, unlike Thomas Dolby, Cindy Lauper and Bonnie Tyler used synths as them for the backbone of their music along with Simmons Drums.

  • This is kind of sad that this video became an ad for Arturia Jupiter 8V.

I Love the sound of the Jupiter 8, I have the Jupiter 8V 2.0...IT IS NOT A JUPITER 8 NO WAY NO HOW! It sits on my shelf and I never use it because of the dis-satisfying sound quality. If I had a real Jupiter8 it would be used all the time,

Howard you should be ashamed of selling your soul for an ad campaign for Arturia.

Buddhist or not, you took the money over integrity.....sorry but true.

  • No disrespect to HJ but that song sounds like a knock off of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill.

  • Howard gets it! He knows what it's about....love the lyrics, no one is to blame...he's spiritually minded guy.....he had happy songs...saw him at Blossom back in the day....gotta find who you are spiritually!

  • for a video that's about syncronising things together, it's a shame the sound doesn't sync with the picture

  • SONIC STATE'S "Top 20 synths of all time" didn't make much sense, as some of the machines on the list aren't even synths, they are romplers like the korg M1 or roland JV-1080

  • Yes i still have a crush on Howard Jones!

  • oh dear lol

  • AAH, RICHARD LAWSON interviewed him a few years back and theyve just used that ..this is from the sonic state synth top 20

  • Who is this smug git ? And wtf has he done ?

  • Who is asking and wtf are your credentials, accomplishments, etc.?

  • I know a smug git when I see one...

  • Got a mirror in your hand, huh?

But seriously, why so bitter mate?

  • Ah, that stunning yank wit, replete with terms such as 'freedom' and 'victory'...one day there will, perhaps, be some originality...

Tne guy introducing it - just look at the smug git...

  • dont fuck with howard jones..

  • Don't fuck with Howard Jones ?

Another yank, possibly ? I suppose that you completely miss the irony of using threatening behaviour to 'defend' Howard Jones...

And I was on about the smug git who introduces the film. I bought the albums when they came out...

    Ah, keyboard warriors...how tiresome...

  • yeah right..

  • His later music seems to contradict his words here. By the early 90's, he threw out the synthesizers and went mellow. I forgot about him at that time. Hope he regained his appreciation for synth sounds.

  • I am not a big fan of Howard Jones music....but I must admit he did great things for the synth world. I mean look at what he did with the JP8! I have seen a few live vids of this guy and while yes.....I find the music is kinda cheesy, I can't help to throw my kudo's to this guy for what he has done with synths. He live setup is HOT!!!!

  • These comments are lame.

How about the fact that we got to hear how he wanted to make new sounds, and felt it had all been done before. I had never heard him say that...no wonder I loved his music and bought it....

  • I love Howard Jones' music and I always will, but that is poor argumentation. How do you know he doesn't lie? Just because he's a buddhist? That is absolutely no guarantee. Secondly, yes he has done many things right and he is a pioneer in some ways. But most successful keyboardist alive you say? I didn't know Jean Michel Jarre was dead??

  • First off ...Howard is a devote Buddist, so he doesn't lie. Secondly, he's the most successful keyboardist alive, so he hardly needs to lie about anything. He is a pioneer and is still a pioneer who just had 3 #1 UK hits in 2007/2008. So he must be doing something right.

  • What a liar.

  • he sais they sound incredible... for plug ins ;) he did not say they sound better than the originals. And he did NOT meantioned the fatness of the plug ins, he mentioned it with the jupiter 8. So learn reading between the lines!

  • You can see him look away from the camera to read the cue card that says arturia.

  • Love his songs.. but what a fibber :D

  • what made the music of the 80s so fantastic was its simplicity. i wish howard would bust out the ole jupiter 8 and return to 80s pop sound. the world wants that stuff again! dont modernize it but make it fun and poppy like the 80s! howard rules.

  • I like Nick Rhodes' comment that the JP-8 emulator is interesting, but definitely NOT a real JP-8. I've had a Jupiter 8 for about 12 years now, and I love it.

  • Please tell me, what is the melody playing from 2.10 to 2.19? I have heard it before, but I can't recognise it!

  • Re: the Arturia, I think he was under Duress, with half a dozen kalashlikovs aimed firmly at his temple:)

Hardware rules imo, some VST's/soft synths are ok though "korg Legacy" ain't bad, with the korg m1 and ALL the expansion banks included!.

  • Dear Mr. Jones.

You are one of the best synth musicians ever! But how much did you sell your soul for? Because Arturia do not sound the same as the original. I've played both.

  • I wondering why hes lying about Arturia and their ehm... "emulation" of JP8 , i tried the demo and its was , well.. bad , it sounds like some regular synthedit VST without any character. This is just bullshit , im sure he knows that he lied. And why they had to show the beatles while talking about JP8 ,i hate them more and more since i moved to UK.

  • When he praises the VST, he subconsciously indicates that he's lying by placing his finger on his lips as you can see if you go back and look.

  • cough.. cough.. spot the 'stealth' ad !

  • Also, unless you're really comfortable with alt+shift+q+up-arrow combinations, have fun finding a peripheral with all those knobs, dials and indicators!

  • On top of this, there are various characteristics of the sound that will be missing in the emulated interpretation due to the simple fact that the circuitry that handles the synthesized signal all the way to the output are missing in a computer emulated setup.

You could try to replicate it with equalization, but you may never be able to totally achieve the same result as you would with the actual instrument.

  • Analog sound is usually better, especially on the low frequencies. It usually has alot more bottom. Analog is magic, digital is just mathematics to me.

  • Funny, even the simplest PC with even a crap onboard sound card can emulate all he speaks of!

  • thats a bit like saying someone using MS paint can recreat the mona lisa - maybe but doubtful

  • yeah thats why there is a huge movement to return to hardware gear right now. also it is also the reason why a jupiter 8 keeps going up in price while computers keep going down.

  • i am lost, but what i do know is that i miss my old yamaha dx100. it could do the things that i can't get my new gear to do. sold all my analog gear. crap

  • I have a mini Casio from 198o.

  • I often wondered about that too. Wondered why so many who like and appreciate '80s music for lack of a better term, hated it back in the hey day of the '80s. As a teen in the early to mid '80s I loved it. I still do. I was a new romantic back then. But the songs that I hated then I still hate. Songs like Dead and Alive's "Spin ..." whatever it's called.

  • You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

  • I used to rather dislike 80's music as a twenty something year old. Now I really appreciate what a great talent Howard Jones was and still is!

  • Think about the environmental pollution he'd cause by flying to the moon just cause he wants to play new song up there... :P

  • Howards Voice is so... special! Its unique and i love the way he speaks...

  • I'd also like to say here that Revolution of the heart is a really good album overall. I bought it thinking it would be forgivably bland, but it's becoming one of the best in my collection. It's very intense and meaningful. Thank you Howard :)

  • In my experience, being familiar with computers and an experienced sound engineer, soft synths surpass their original synths. They sound exactly the same, and you can save all those settings. There are also more overall tweaks, and using them with recording software is a dream, and if I need a gritty sound I just plug the computer into an amp and mic it. This works especially well with organ software. Remember - all that counts is if the music itself is any good :)

  • Yes, it's the music, but as a ProTools eng, and soft-synth user, I still use my Jupiter 8..it's not the same.

  • I'm glad I do all my own engineering instead of trusting it to someone who's so deaf he can't tell the difference between analog and digital. Guitarists still prefer tube amps over solid state for the same reason synth players will still pay thousands of dollars more for a real analog synth instead of a digital one: it's hard to match the sound exactly. Any recording engineer worth his pay should know this.

  • Hi - You are Sound Engineer - Don't youthink all these external machines and/or soft make it impossible to swing *- they don't follow : as I do on my technics KN2000 - that follows really my chords and makes me swing - my Triton for instance can't follow - see my page

  • Yea, I would endorse anything for large sums of money.

Nothing beats the real thing, unless the softsynth was real, in that case it would win by default.

But Howard Jones is awesome so, he could do pretty much what he wants. I heard he wants to fly to the moon, so he could play "New Song" up there. I hope he ditches that dancing freak guy on the moon.

  • what was this video taken from? id love to see the rest of the countdown

  • Hey Howie, where's yer bald head (sex) slave boy?

  • XD lol

  • i am not writing as a hj fan.i know howard as he is musical director of a buddhist choir of which i am member. we meet once a month and occasionally do public engagements. i have gigged with and also played piano with him. i was born in 1980 so remember virtually nothing about the 80s. its hard to fathom just what a big star he was back in the day!!

  • what is the name of your buddhist choir..hope you don't mind me asking.

  • We are a four part harmony choir. We sing a selection of songs some of which were written or co-written by Howard. We are next performing at an open day at Taplow Court near Maidenhead in Berkshire this Monday 28th.

  • We call ourselves the Glorious Life Chorus.

  • I think it's stopped playing

  • Howard Jones is a genius," has to be said" Thanx for posting!
