Someone told me this.

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

Only use this in an emergancy.

Simple solution. Install cameras, and take a picture everytime a transaction is made. That way, if you have been scammed, you have an alibi. If the criminal covers up the camera, it still clears you of charges. Why would you cover the camera up if you're making a simple transaction?

There is a very simple way to prevent fraude performed in the way they mention here, but that would place responsibility with the shop owner, compare the account number on the card to the one printend on the receipt. No match, then you're working with a fake card, hold the customer, call the police. Simple!

The people featured who had their money stolen are most likley to have used their card in a shop with a camera recording the PIN code. Then using the card number and expiary from the merchants recipt a clone can be created. The attact demonstrated in the clip does not appear to be a Cryptanalysis flaw in the security system, but what the researchers appear to have done is extended the connection from the chip to another chip and pin reader wirelessly.

Not much detail on what exactly the Cambridge academics did here - I am guessing they didn't use a DDA Chip Card, questionable on the feaibility of copying a Chip Card - often it is a combination of a cloned Magnetic Stripe and an observed or captured PIN (through modification of a terminal - as in the Trintech SC5000).

Sounds like - from both a consumer and bank point of view - we need greater investigative powers to research fraud activity on chip and pin cards.
