Am I so old that everything that belongs to my twenties looks so unique and unparalled or there is really something in Pref's songs, lyrics, atmospheres that makes them so incredibly brilliant if compared to the music of today?
mi STRAPIACE!!!! E' una delle colonne sonore della mia gioventù..è una delle mie preferite nella sua semplicità....mi viene da piangere ad ascoltarla...
I read that prefab were critized for not making music that you can dance to - and that Paddy had responded by saying that he wanted to be the fred astaire of lyrics. And he sure succeeded. I think that paddys lyrics makes him slightly superior to the ABCs, simple minds, tears for fears etc who were all great 80s bands
This is where it all started for me. This is the first Prefab track that I ever heard back in 85, and from then on in I've loved everything that they've ever done (even farmyard cat) Paddy thanks for all the music and the wonderful memories my life would have been poorer witghout you.
I forgot about this band. Exposed to it in Europe in the 80s. Never heard anyone talk about it in the States. .. Checked out 'king of rock n roll' again, my oh my... LOL
I think PADDY should send the accapella to a DJ of our era such as tim berg , it could be phenomenal , we miss that kind of nostalgic harmonies these days
@440davo Actually, it almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it all those years ago too, but the feeling is even stronger now that nobody seems to make good music anymore and I feel that many things aren't as good as they used to be.
God I have chills....have long been a fan, but I am just taken to a place that almost makes my heart long to be there again.....Prefab sprout has the best music to listen to whilst traveling by plane ! hands up !
What a writer in McAloon! I've been a fan since I first heard them in the early 80's and they've influenced my music to this day. PFS took the tin pan influence to the electronic age and gave us the melody, tension, and clever, thoughtful lyrics that are sometimes lacking in today's pop. Thomas Dolby said McAloon was his favorite artist to work with and I can hear why. Thanks Paddy for your indelible contribution to my music and the lives of millions. Cheers!
It seems to be the way in recent times that folk cant see class when it arrives.have been a huge sprouts fan since their begining and in todays vacous music even more relevant than ever.Paddys music takes me to a gentler happier place and i thank him greatly for that.
@zenileon - Lady Gaga is pure theatre and anything BUT actual musical talent. She appeals to a generation of people who hear music through their eyes...... and Culture club in the 80's? I was there , and rest assured they did NOT start any musical revolution but what Boy George DID do was to start blurring the gender dividing lines, and inhis own way (like Gaga) provided some "theatre" for his audience. The difference between Culture Club & George and Gaga is that Mr.O'Dowd had a stunning voice!
To msfibs: NYC in the eighties! I'm probably twice your age but remember how great it was to listen to all this music on WLIR Long Island Radio with 'Willoughby' and the rest?
I wish I lived through my youth in the late 70's through to the late 80's so I could have heard these along with many other top bands live rather living through it now and having to deal with the drone of Man GaGa every 10 minutes coming out of every available orifice.
@jhackney1990 I think this is going to be a great decade for music. Although, you may not like GaGa, like a friend of mine said the other day, it takes someone as strange and bizarre as her to kick of the musical decade big time. Rather like Culture Club did in the early eighties.
Everything about "Steve McQueen", was fantastic, including the cool album cover. I've been listening to their tracks on Youtube and it all takes me back to my adolescence.
i've been having a bit of a youtube 80's revival recently - this is a track i haven't heard since i left home and the vinyl is in the loft at my parents but what an amazing track - i remember playing the steve mcqueen album over and over when i was about 15 - haunting vocals. Totally underrated artist.
Paddy McAloon is the best songwriter ever. And being the best means being underrated. Period. God bless you Paddy, the countless sleepless nights I've spent listening to "Steve McQueen" are worth a life
Prefab Sprout is one of those under estimated 80s bands that did deserve so much more fame and airplay then they did get. Still they are played so rarely on the radio which is a shame !! Amazing song this one is.
Paddy, you were so cool back then, and you still are, my friend, very much so!! This was the song that got me hooked into your sinker line's. I was hooked, forever, after listening to this incredible song!!! Thank you for years and years of fantastic ear treats and the best songwriting I've ever experienced!! You are a genious, Paddy!!!
nunca la habia oido en mi vida hasta hace unos meses viendo este video en vh1 y desde que la oi y la vi me encanto y no deje de tenerla en mi cabeza esta rola...son de esas que piezas musicales que tan solo de oirla una vez te hipnotizan...
P McAloon - not only a gifted, original songwriter, but a very cool guitarist and under-rated vocalist of considerable soulfulness. This is a typically lovely, allusive tune with a haunting, spare but taut arrangement - Thomas Dolby produces. Love it.
Woodward67, yes I suppose Michael Graves does look a bit like Luther Vandross! I think most of the recorded keyboards are actually Thomas Dolby, though, or "T.D" as quoted at the start. Great video! I love Paddy's look here.
Great tune about human desire. I like the part where they sing "If your eyes are wantin' all they see." I wonder of Paddy meant the double entendre of "wantin'" and "wanton?" Compared to their other videos, this one's quite good. The bridge flows like the motorcycle goes. Classic. Unforgettable chorus.
Yeah, generally better without the vid, tho... but ya gotta cut 'em some slack! They were probably navigating a maze of idiotic record execs and cheesy video producers at that time...
Great thanks for that. The beautiful Wendy and her even more beautiful voice is so part of Prefabs sound. Such a pity she's not there any more. Is she too fat now?
This song brings me back to my little room and my first beard. Art school and train rides to see a lovely but sad curly-haired girl at sarah lawrence on a rainy october evening. Trying to sleep on her twin bed. Fighting in the wee hours and walking back to the train station. to wait for the first train back to the city.
There is only one word I can think of to describe this song: tender. Does that make any sense? I just mean that there's no harshness to it; it's very gentle soft rock.
Paddy McAloon is one of the most under-rated songwriters of the 1980's and easily one of the best in the past 50 years, when you have other musicians as diverse as Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and Morrissey of the The Smiths both professing to be fans of McAloon and Prefab Sprout, that gotta tell you something.

This is the first video that I ever saw from PS and they have gone on to be my favourite band of all time. Thanks Paddy for all the music and the hours of pleasure listening to your unique sound.
I discovered this song by accident watching "Muchmusic" in Canada back in '85 and it instantly became one of all time my favorite songs. It hasn't left any of my mp3 players I've owned since then.
Am I so old that everything that belongs to my twenties looks so unique and unparalled or there is really something in Pref's songs, lyrics, atmospheres that makes them so incredibly brilliant if compared to the music of today?

Just Saw DLH - Satellite and other songs. In my opinion, they sound "too American", probably the country music audience would like them.

If you steal, be robin hood''

I discovered this song by accident watching "Muchmusic" in Canada back in '85 and it instantly became one of all time my favorite songs. It hasn't left any of my mp3 players I've owned since then.
