  • Am I so old that everything that belongs to my twenties looks so unique and unparalled or there is really something in Pref's songs, lyrics, atmospheres that makes them so incredibly brilliant if compared to the music of today?

    Paddy, Paddy where are you?

  • All round winner of a track, love the synth voice texture.

  • I read that prefab were critized for not making music that you can dance to - and that Paddy had responded by saying that he wanted to be the fred astaire of lyrics. And he sure succeeded. I think that paddys lyrics makes him slightly superior to the ABCs, simple minds, tears for fears etc who were all great 80s bands

  • This is where it all started for me. This is the first Prefab track that I ever heard back in 85, and from then on in I've loved everything that they've ever done (even farmyard cat) Paddy thanks for all the music and the wonderful memories my life would have been poorer witghout you.

  • Superb track made by a very underestimated talent.

Lyrics are intriguing, arrangement perfect, every piece in the perfect spot

  • mágnifica banda.

  • If FINE music, full of nostalgia, and great lyrics has a name in the 80`s that will be PREFAB SPROUT,I used to be a big fan also, here in Mexico city!

  • Paddy McAloon not only gifted, original songwritter all the above very clever and very modest. Genius!!

  • I forgot about this band. Exposed to it in Europe in the 80s. Never heard anyone talk about it in the States. .. Checked out 'king of rock n roll' again, my oh my... LOL

    a little embarrassing now.

  • tro cool c mn adolescance cet zik

  • I think PADDY should send the accapella to a DJ of our era such as tim berg , it could be phenomenal , we miss that kind of nostalgic harmonies these days

  • I think PADDY should send the accapella to a DJ of our era such as tim berg , it could be phenomenal ,

  • After 20 odd years, the beginning sounds so nostalgic it makes me cry

  • @hindsighter Im glad I am not the only one who feels like that

  • @440davo Actually, it almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it all those years ago too, but the feeling is even stronger now that nobody seems to make good music anymore and I feel that many things aren't as good as they used to be.

  • Sono dei grangi........

  • God I have chills....have long been a fan, but I am just taken to a place that almost makes my heart long to be there again.....Prefab sprout has the best music to listen to whilst traveling by plane ! hands up !

  • Great song - I love Paddy's hair too

  • Great !!!

  • one of all time fav's from this band - nice bass work

  • he reminds me of singer in scissor sisters in this vid

  • Awesome songwriter par excellence.

  • Loooove the drums. Fantastic drummer

  • What a writer in McAloon! I've been a fan since I first heard them in the early 80's and they've influenced my music to this day. PFS took the tin pan influence to the electronic age and gave us the melody, tension, and clever, thoughtful lyrics that are sometimes lacking in today's pop. Thomas Dolby said McAloon was his favorite artist to work with and I can hear why. Thanks Paddy for your indelible contribution to my music and the lives of millions. Cheers!

  • @bluggdr

It seems to be the way in recent times that folk cant see class when it arrives.have been a huge sprouts fan since their begining and in todays vacous music even more relevant than ever.Paddys music takes me to a gentler happier place and i thank him greatly for that.

  • Awe my lord, the outro, 'Prefab Sprout' and paddy just staring back, so 80's...im a sucker it.

  • @zenileon - Lady Gaga is pure theatre and anything BUT actual musical talent. She appeals to a generation of people who hear music through their eyes...... and Culture club in the 80's? I was there , and rest assured they did NOT start any musical revolution but what Boy George DID do was to start blurring the gender dividing lines, and inhis own way (like Gaga) provided some "theatre" for his audience. The difference between Culture Club & George and Gaga is that Mr.O'Dowd had a stunning voice!

  • @shaggybristol I agree and hope our young took time just to listen and don't just hear music as their he rates.....

  • I strongly believe that this decade will be a brilliant one, musically and otherwise, better than the previous two.

  • such an awesome song but a tragedy of an 80's video :*( (lol)

  • Excelente tema !!

  • Great song, lovely singing.

  • As we like it, a real song, by a songwriter

  • Love Wendyxxxxxxx

  • Wendy is so beautiful in this

  • Fantastic irish band. Makes me proud to be irish

  • @Ballyhook Sorry to burst your bubble but they’re not from Ireland; they are from County Durham, North East England

  • Paddy's voice is smooth and beautiful

  • ótimo....ótima banda...bela música

  • Paddy's moustache makes him look like one of the Village People! This album is one of the best ever.

  • Michael Biehn!

  • Blimey it's Tiger Woods @ 01:30!!

  • one of the underated bands of the 80's love the video if you like this one check out the live version of"when love breaks down"

  • Love this track so much, thank you for posting :-)

  • this guy's some crazy mountain man now - google a recent pic - he looks like he hasn't seen another person in 25 years

  • To msfibs: NYC in the eighties! I'm probably twice your age but remember how great it was to listen to all this music on WLIR Long Island Radio with 'Willoughby' and the rest?

  • l'adoro sta canzone insieme a when love breaks down. l'album è anche molto fgradevole...dei grandi

  • JEEEEZ, I LOVE THIS BAND!!!

Sorry I missed them in the 80'.s

  • Hey the black guy soo looks like Luther Vandross a bit!

  • An exceptional track from an exceptional album. Liked & faved :)

  • I wish I lived through my youth in the late 70's through to the late 80's so I could have heard these along with many other top bands live rather living through it now and having to deal with the drone of Man GaGa every 10 minutes coming out of every available orifice.

  • @jhackney1990 I think this is going to be a great decade for music. Although, you may not like GaGa, like a friend of mine said the other day, it takes someone as strange and bizarre as her to kick of the musical decade big time. Rather like Culture Club did in the early eighties.

  • @zenileon Bullshit

  • @MartiW Okay......................

  • @zenileon I AGREE WITH THE OTHER GUY..BULLSHIT

please don't talk of that mediocre singer LadyGaga here in this temple of the music

  • Great stuff

  • My adolescence in NYC! I loved Prefab Sprout and happier days in the 80s. I dont think I've even seen this video!

  • Great songwriter with a great voice.

  • Everything about "Steve McQueen", was fantastic, including the cool album cover. I've been listening to their tracks on Youtube and it all takes me back to my adolescence.

  • This band is so great! In the same league with best pop bands of 80´ ...Spandau,Simple Minds,Tears for Fears,ABC.....

  • i've been having a bit of a youtube 80's revival recently - this is a track i haven't heard since i left home and the vinyl is in the loft at my parents but what an amazing track - i remember playing the steve mcqueen album over and over when i was about 15 - haunting vocals. Totally underrated artist.

  • Paddy McAloon is the best songwriter ever. And being the best means being underrated. Period. God bless you Paddy, the countless sleepless nights I've spent listening to "Steve McQueen" are worth a life

  • I actually bought this tape way back and was surprised how great it was. I also bought Baltimora for the song Pull The Wire its excellent!!

  • If your eyes are wanting all you see, then I think I'll name you after me... :)

  • 3:35 "I have never understood how to play this damn game"

  • i wish i was back in 1985,life was fucking great then, its pretty crap now!!

  • Fresh wind in the eighties and different....MORE fantastic ´80´s music on my channel!!!!

  • the best song about unwanted pregnancy ever

  • bloody brillo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Prefab Sprout is one of those under estimated 80s bands that did deserve so much more fame and airplay then they did get. Still they are played so rarely on the radio which is a shame !! Amazing song this one is.

  • @2nstra YOu're wery right so! The entire album "Steve Mc Queen" was a marvelous jewel, truly unforgettable, like this song, like those years

  • @gvv1965 Couldn't agree pure quality from start to finish

  • I don't belive this song is Thomas Dolby's work.

    Masterpiece!!

  • This is Paddy McAloon's work!

  • @MartiW I know the fact.... I said producer.thank U. : )

  • uno di loro morì dissanguato

  • one of the greatest songs ever written, shame most people have never heard of it

  • Really sweet thing...

  • Paddy, you were so cool back then, and you still are, my friend, very much so!! This was the song that got me hooked into your sinker line's. I was hooked, forever, after listening to this incredible song!!! Thank you for years and years of fantastic ear treats and the best songwriting I've ever experienced!! You are a genious, Paddy!!!

  • Paddy's beard is a bit bigger now

  • does anyone have the full lyrics to this song. loved this whole record-

    paddy, porn star...so funny!

  • Man I miss 70's & 80's music!!

  • I came across this video by accident on MuchMusic back in '85 and I was hooked the first time I heard it.

    Great song and wonderful phrasing.

I love that weird organ sound or whatever it is during the intro ,b4 the second verse begins and at the end before the fade out

"If you steel be Robin Hood"

  • Thanx for posting this, love this whole album!

  • paddy looks like 80s porn star!!

  • My FAVE track from the abum. Got it on old cassette somewhere, OMG - evokes such memories.

  • "...wishing she could call him heartache, but it's not a boy's name..."

    Best. Line. Ever.

  • @RokuSix I know. :-)

  • Steve McQueen LP is great.

  • P McAloon - not only a gifted, original songwriter, but a very cool guitarist and under-rated vocalist of considerable soulfulness. This is a typically lovely, allusive tune with a haunting, spare but taut arrangement - Thomas Dolby produces. Love it.

  • @londonemski allusive or elusive?

  • @DocBrewster "allusive", I think I mean - full of indirect references - in this case musically and lyrically.

  • I love the song, but that is unfortunate facial hair on Paddy ,lol

  • awesome

  • Steve McQueen is a really superb album. This track stands out in particular as a extraordinary pop song.

  • yep, possibly my all time fav, I played this 'record' to death.

  • Not just a beautiful song, but also a great video. Wendy deserves such attention.

  • Beautiful song, horrible mustache! (seriously, one of my favorite 80's songs EVER! )

  • @luvzgb Really? I kinda liked the mustache.

  • Hello, magnificent and wonderful song and unforgettable band, thanks, bye.

  • Why does the lead singer look like he wants to kill somebody? LOL !Regardless, it's an awesome song

  • another 1 of their MAGNIFICENT BEAUTIES !!!!!!!!

    loveU4evah !!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful as always. I was in love with Wendy Smith when I was 18 :-)

  • outstanding!

  • Paddy with his pornstar mustache, lol.

  • My favorite PS song but I have no idea what the lyrics refer to/mean -- can anyone help explain (if there is a meaning)? Thanks.

  • it's about a pregnatn girl who is a victim of her own lust and she wants to name the child appetite

  • It is about pregnancy and about the appetite of life.

  • Classic song, did I take too many drugs in the 80s and 90s or is the black guy in this vid a very slim and young looking Luthor Vandross?

  • Woodward67, yes I suppose Michael Graves does look a bit like Luther Vandross! I think most of the recorded keyboards are actually Thomas Dolby, though, or "T.D" as quoted at the start. Great video! I love Paddy's look here.

  • Timeless, absolutely. Seriously underrated. He is simply a genius.

  • I've loved them since 20 years. still wonderful. timeless.

  • martin is a very underrated bassist..

  • Steve McQueen is still my fave Sprout album but i'm in love with Lets Change The World With Music too. Just can't stop playing it. Thanks Paddy

  • Great tune about human desire. I like the part where they sing "If your eyes are wantin' all they see." I wonder of Paddy meant the double entendre of "wantin'" and "wanton?" Compared to their other videos, this one's quite good. The bridge flows like the motorcycle goes. Classic. Unforgettable chorus.

  • BRILLIANT tune....

Yeah, generally better without the vid, tho... but ya gotta cut 'em some slack! They were probably navigating a maze of idiotic record execs and cheesy video producers at that time...

  • Great thanks for that. The beautiful Wendy and her even more beautiful voice is so part of Prefabs sound. Such a pity she's not there any more. Is she too fat now?

  • yeah, she's probably fat now. that's too bad. but am pretty sure she still has an amazing voice.

  • This song brings me back to my little room and my first beard. Art school and train rides to see a lovely but sad curly-haired girl at sarah lawrence on a rainy october evening. Trying to sleep on her twin bed. Fighting in the wee hours and walking back to the train station. to wait for the first train back to the city.

    Ahhh, my appetites.

  • I really love this song. I just replayed it three times. I didn't realize how much I loved it until now. What a wonderful tune this is.

  • Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good: Greatest pop album of the 80's.

  • My favorite song

  • Really cheesy 80's video not the only great 80's band you can accuse of that

But the music is classic as is everything is on the album Steve Mcquenn

  • There is only one word I can think of to describe this song: tender. Does that make any sense? I just mean that there's no harshness to it; it's very gentle soft rock.

  • thanks Paddy xx

McAloon's a genius... Worry free times!!!!

  • God the memories come flooding back!!! Paddy - what a genius. Much underated band. I dont care what anybody says - the 80s were AMAZING!!

  • exactly, so much souvenirs from 1985-1988 where I was a student ...

  • never really heard of this band untill now!

and im really likin' this song. thanks a bunch :D

  • nn si sentono più..peccato!! grandi prefaub!!

  • Paddy McAloon is one of the most under-rated songwriters of the 1980's and easily one of the best in the past 50 years, when you have other musicians as diverse as Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and Morrissey of the The Smiths both professing to be fans of McAloon and Prefab Sprout, that gotta tell you something.

Methinks that Prefab Sprout along with XTC and Love & Rockets were the most genius yet under-rated bands of the 1980's - too bad no one knew about them or their music at the time.

  • Thank you for this comment. True words. Prefab sprout will be heard in the centuries that will come. A really elegant yet emotional band

  • All albuns are great but my preference is:

    1-Andromeda Heights

    2-Langley park to Memphis

    3-Jordan

    4-Steve McQueen

    5-Protest songs

    6-Gunan and other Stories

    7-Swoon

?????-Lets change the world with music set 2009 ????

Paddy said the new album sounds like andremeda and jordan

  • curiously I rememer really well those times, thought i wasnt alive yet

  • Cue fanfare is the most beautiful song of this group.

  • If you like Prefab Sprout, try searching DEAD LIKE HARRY - SATELLITE for a new band you might like.

  • Just Saw DLH - Satellite and other songs. In my opinion, they sound "too American", probably the country music audience would like them.

  • ''If you take, then put back good

If you steal, be robin hood''

This video reminds me good memories.

Another good album from prefab : Andromeda Heights

    Thanks a lot for posting

    Greetings from France

  • the video has a deep message especially for 25 years ago!

  • Good stuff!!

  • Una de mis bandas favoritas!

  • Paddy MacAloon and co are probably the best lyricists in the world.

  • Cool, long time no hear.

    Scotland Rules........

  • they were not Scottish `frigate'. - from the north east of England

  • Cheers. i certainly will. i'm going to be a prefab sprout fan till the day i die.

  • Most underrated band along with The Lotus Eaters and China Crisis.

  • Right on the spot, sastal!

  • I would agree

  • "So if you take then put back good. If you steal be robin hood"

    brilliant!!

Thanks for posting this classic gem from the 80's

  • I discovered this song by accident watching "Muchmusic" in Canada back in '85 and it instantly became one of all time my favorite songs. It hasn't left any of my mp3 players I've owned since then.
